Hotel Alta Las Palomas is my go-to whenever I visit Costa Rica, and for good reason—it’s simply perfect! I can’t recommend it enough. The staff treats you like royalty, and the service is consistently exceptional. The atmosphere feels like you’ve stepped into a serene, otherworldly retreat where relaxation is the top priority. And the food? It’s so amazing, it’s worth planning a trip just for that alone. Every bite is so delicious, you’ll want to rave about it to everyone back home! This is the kind of place that keeps you coming back.
I also have to mention the spa-like experience each time you step into the bathroom, with high-quality beds and crisp, fresh linens that ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. The rooms are wonderfully quiet, and the balcony offers a lovely view of the city, framed by palm trees. The pool area makes you feel like you’re on a true vacation—it’s the perfect escape.

excellent restaurant - food and service; great decor and setting
very minimal front of house staff; no concierge to help with luggage (lots of steps); lack of staff around; enquired about tours but little help.

I was upgraded to a suite and read the reviews about requesting one of these on a higher floor ( I was on the 4th floor). An uninterrupted view of parts of the city and the mountains, awoken to birds singing in the morning - it was amazing.
The suites at this hotel are really well appointed, large living room when you enter leading to the balcony. Off to the left, arched doors lead to a large bedroom with views of the balcony, city and mountains. Large walk in shower, large storage and dressing area. The only thing I could slightly fault was the AC in the bathroom wasn't very strong. It was 80+F when I was there and the bathroom was always way hotter than the other rooms (even when i wasn't using the shower). Aside from that I LOVED the layout and facilities of the suite.
Breakfast was included and no complaints -pretty standard, well made. I had dinner at the hotel twice and again, tasty food, good quality- no complaints. The restaurant itself is very beautiful, there are long planters lining the inside of the large windows, running the full length of the restaurant (overlooking the pool area) and another set separating it from the bar, a nice added touch. The one thing that was an issue was wasps/ hornets- on my last day I sat near the door by one of the planters and there was a mini hornets nest inside in one of the corners above the planter. As I'm allergic to stings I had to quickly move and pointed it out to the restaurant staff.
The hotel decor in the main areas is really beautiful, you feel like you are walking down a little indoor street with huge wooden chests, structured "fairy" light decorations, high-back throne like chairs beautifully decor'ed, long sofas, huge floor to ceiling curtains . At one end it opens into the restaurant and the other end is the entrance. Aside from the beauty of the hotel, the staff are so friendly and kind, they stop and chat, they're efficient, nothing is too much.
Address the mini hornets nest in one of the corners above the planter by the door! For someone allergic to stings that was a little alarming.

very beautiful place, with a nice view, good bed sheets, nice and helpful staff
many things. too many bugs inside the room, a big spider and a lizard included. small towels. just tap water in the room. to ask for a 1 hour late check out you have to pay 22 USD, which is outrageous.
also, being a small luxury hotel you would think they would like at more attention to small details. there were tiles missing in the swimming pool floor, painting needed in the room, the couch in my room was very dirty.

I liked the location up the hill with an amazing view of San Jose and some of the best sunsets I have seen. It was a bit isolated for someone without a car but I was wanting a few days’ time out so it suited me.
Unfortunately my stay was marred by getting a stomach bug after 2.5 weeks in Costa Rica with no problems at all. Also, it could be noisy when there were late arrivals or early departures as the sound echoing from the corridors made it sound like they were in your room!

The hotel is nice and we felt well looked after at our stay.
I am sorry that I can not give a good review for this hotel as they charged me double for one of the rooms and have now been waiting 2 months for the refund. Communication is very poor.

beautiful facility and excellent service in the restaurant and front desk.

the architecture and decoration is beautiful and the staf is very friendly!

Room was spacious and lovely views from the balcony although everything very tired
The service from the staff is very poor. The front desk staff barely acknowledge you. One day our room wasn't cleaned. When we advised them we were told we had left a sign to say we didn't want the room to be made up. Simply not true. There was no sign. Hammering in the workshop below our room at 6am which we thought was in the next room, we were told the road was being cleaned. With a hammer!! We were advised by email the manager was trying to contact us to dicuss our issues but despite being in our room all afternoon no one did attempt to contact us. Very poor customer relations. Simply not be a luxury experience. Very expensive

peaceful
I booked 2 nights but because my flight got canceled due to winter weather in the States the airline reputed me and so I could only stay one night not the 2 I booked. I understand it wasn’t the hotels fault but it wasn’t mine either and the hotel made me pay for both nights which didn’t feel fare. I understand they have expenses and don’t want to or can’t offered to loose the money but also I’d think they lend a hand and understand as a consumer it doesn’t feel right to be charged for something I didn’t receive. they could have been more compassionate or understanding and given me a discount at the least as they didn’t have to clean my room and they didn’t make the breakfast I paid for. maybe they could have offered me a free night in the future or at the very least a free meal! but there was no act or gesture of understanding and I felt that was not great customer service. I mentioned to the owner of my situation and she took down my name but nothing else. I hope I might hear from her or someone at the hotel.

Absolutely beautiful property, the lobby and public spaces are something very special and unique. it is a place that clearly has had a lot of thought and love put into its design and build, albeit it is showing signs of tiredness in places. the owner (husband and wife) came out to introduce themselves which was a lovely touch. Swimming pool superb. The restaurant staff (particularly the lady - I forget her name) were so lovely, really friendly and attentive. food was delicious
Rooms need a bit of maintenance - shower handle falling off, insect screens not shutting properly, towelling robes a bit threadbare, all showing signs of age (although beds really comfy!).
Receptionists let the property down a little - I think she was quite junior and didn’t really know how to welcome guests - took a long time to check us in and had to call someone else to help with queries.

Amazing architecture!! Beautiful views. Staff was extremely helpful. Would recommend. Our actual length of stay was Oct 19-26.
Airconditioning didnt cool the room enough but we like it really cold.

Service exceptional all across the board. Orthopedic mattress super.
I expected haute cuisine, which we definitely didn't get.
Also, no security bar or mat in shower.

The staff at the reception and in the bar is friendly. The room was large and we had a good sleep in the bed. The common areas are well decorated. We appreciated the free cocktail at our arrival. The neighbourhood around the hotel seems safe for tourists.
The pictures on the website (booking) were misleading, because we didn't have any view from our room (a suite in the 2nd floor). The were no refridgerator in the room, which was missing. And we had to wait at least 3 minutes in the shower to have hot water. The breakfast wasn't spectacular. The prices in the restaurant are far too high, as the shuttle offered as an option by the hotel. In conclusion, not the quality of a 4 stars hotel.

I loved everything about this hotel, the view, the food,
4.2
location, hotel style, pool
size and shape of the room, limited menu options
4.2
Friendliness of the staff and the food at the restaurant was great!
It needs general maintenance, a bit outdated. Fan control not working, toilet leaking. No TV remote for Netflix.
4.2
Staff was perfect and always ready to make it a great experience. Thumbs up. This hotel is a hidden gem
in a good location. If you can get a garden balcony it’s as enjoyable than a room with a view which is one of the best in SJ. Both have their perks.
I know they the establishment is energy minded which is great but sometimes walking to the room can seem a dark experience.

Beautiful view of San José
the didn’t have coffee machine or mini fridge

Beautiful view and nice pool area. The hotel has a very castle like feel which is unique with soaring ceiling heights and master crafted touches.
None.
4.2
Nice big room with a view. The staff were very friendly, helpful and went out of their way to provide breakfast as we were leaving before the restaurant opened.

A slice of heaven after landing from a long haul flight and setting off to explore Costa Rica. a slice of heaven before any flight. A slice of heaven if staying in Costa Rica. Ask Alex for tips on any travel ideas..
all lovely

We stayed here for our first night in Costa Rica and our only night in San Jose. We didn't want to stay right in the city centre or in a faceless chain hotel. We've stayed in other hotels that belong to the "Small Luxury Group" and find that it's very reliable for boutique, luxury and authentic places to stay.
The hotel is a gorgeous building and in a relaxing area. It was a relief to arrive there after an 11 hour flight from London! Food was good, room was comfortable and the hotel design is authentic and chic.
Rooms are simple but still luxurious, and it's nice that the hotel has kept things like the original floor tiles.
Generous balcony for the price, and we overlooked the pool :-)
Nothing, really. The hotel didn't blow us away or offer lots of bells and whistles, but we didn't expect it to! It was perfect for what we wanted and we would recommend it for anyone staying in San Jose for 1 or 2 nights, who wants an authentic experience, some luxury and to be comfortable.
