The photos in the listing did not disappoint. The property is ideally situated in the hills above the mission, away from the coastal fog and surrounded by the mountains. The pool and home are nestled within a lush, beautifully landscaped yard with views above and below. We spent a good portion of our time here in and around the pool, soaking the sun or eating together at the dining table in the shade. The house itself is quaint, full of life, quirky and inviting. We felt so at peace, so relaxed and sort of fell in love with this place. We all felt like we’d found something truly unique and special. I’m a quadriplegic and use a manual wheelchair and I was able to navigate in and around the property with relative ease. The owners Michael and Hilary are genuine, welcoming and accommodating. They agreed to have a wooden ramp built for me to overcome the step to the front door, which gave me full access in and out of the house. They even removed the door to the bathroom in the main bedroom to make it wide enough for my wheelchair. There was ample parking, on flat, paved ground in front of the property, which sits alone at the end of a windy road. I certainly hope to have another opportunity to stay here again.

All was just as described in the listing.
The only thing my adult children mentioned was the abundance of notes and signs left in virtually every room of the house (and outside). These reminded us of the things listed in the 20+ page rules notebook on the kitchen table. It's not a big deal to me, but it can be off-putting to some. We ended up making it a running joke.
Also one of the owners found reasons to come into the property and pool area each day.

This beautiful Spanish style home has spectacular views of the mountains and ocean. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the pool and the poolside setting. The home is uniquely appointed and the kitchen brings you back in time.
4.9
The place exceeded expectations. The views are phenomenal and it was tucked away enough to feel like you got out of the city. The home has so much character and the landscaping is a hidden gem.
4.9
Great accomidations for extended family. The property is a botanical garden. Fascinating landscaping maintained by the owner. The location was great for us, close tothe Santa Barnara Womans' Club

Loved the view; high on a mountain and exciting back road. The landscaping was amazing. No need to visit Botanical garden. Large space, had everything we needed. To cool to swim but did not sign up for pool. Enjoyed sun bathing around the pool. With our daughter’ wedding we were very busy but it was a beautiful place to get away from all the wedding activity.

From the second we arrived; we felt right at home! This place was the perfect place for our family. Cozy and comfortable and a great place to relax. Very quiet location and close to town. We all loved it!

The views and the location with mountain range behind and ocean to the front are astounding. The house is vintage 50's/60's with original art, furnishings, and even appliances and cast iron pans. If you are looking for a unique and quiet spot close to Santa Barbara city and mountains, this is a gem. The hosts are knowledgable, friendly and happy to show you the beautiful gardens.

First off, this is a wonderful, eclectic, arts centered home situated in an ideal spot (I used to live in SB). The pool alone is worth the visit. I am leaving 5 stars as I know I will return again if I need a welcoming, beautiful spot to stay. Michael, our host, was terrific and even helped set us up to pick some of his prickly pear/cactus apples for a rare treat. I am an artist and loved the collection of artifacts and the retro kitchen fixtures.
That said, if you are used to minimalist, spotless interiors and state of the "art" appliances, you will need to set those wants aside and, instead, enjoy what a truly remarkable act of sustainability and care, for what we already have, can lead us towards.
I was able to cook what I wanted, do laundry and enjoy my week with no foibles. The bathrooms and kitchen were clean. The linens and towels were clean and plentiful. The pool cover wasn't that much of a hassle and it was well worth it. The view of the sunset is fabulous and the gardens add to a very tranquil experience.
Thank you so much for lending out your home!

I'm compelled to communicate the property experience in an informational manner. The property views are scenic and pool usage was welcome, during the warm days of our stay without A/C. The hosts were helpfully attentive and unannouncedly present to their property each day of our visit. The decor was somewhat dark and the house amenities were dated. The refrigerater was old and lacking sufficient cooling temperatures. There was no window coverings in the poolside bathroom. And, the shower stalls provided a small space to bathe.

This was a perfect house for our group. The location is classic SB and was up in the hills enough that the mornings were fog free. The art and vibrancy of the space was so fun and enjoyable. We had the best time at Hilary's home. She was so communicative through every step of the process that our arrival and stay was perfectly prepared. She lives on the property but it is so separate from the rental there is no issue. Highly recommend staying here for a family or friend gathering.

We had a wonderful time at this home during our weekend trip to Santa Barbara. The drive up to the home can be a bit intimidating at first but Hilary gives very detailed instructions so we had no problem finding the home. It is an older home but well-decorated and comfortable.
Be sure to read the binder! It provides lots of useful information for navigating an older home.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to use the pool during our stay due to being so busy with other activities in Santa Barbara but Hilary was kind enough to show us how to roll back the pool cover.
All in all, a great stay!
4.9
Our stay was great! There were 7 of us, and had plenty of room both inside and out which made this roomy and relaxing!
The kids loved the swings, but to all of us the pool was the best, when we weren’t at the beach, we were in the pool. We all very much enjoyed our stay, and would love to return in the future 😊

This property is stunning, quirky, full of character. The house is spacious and worked very well for our family.

Six adults stayed for 4 nights. There are mostly pros, but a few cons to staying at this quirky property.
Pros: property is beautiful with lots of flowers and greenery. Pool and outdoor seating is great. House is big and there was plenty of room. Beds were comfy and sheets/linens were nice. Owners were very nice and easy to communicate with. They live there right next door on property.
Cons: on a private road up mountain with single lane. Twice we had to back up to let cars go by. House is old. There are lots of notes with instructions everywhere. You have to roll cover of pool back every nite to keep heat in. It is in very quiet area. If you plan to make any noise at night, this is not the house for you. We couldn’t use gas grill unless we paid $35 for cleaning. They had charcoal grill that worked fine. Bring lighter fluid. You must recycle and sort trash.
Summary: great place for large family. Lots of room! Fully stocked with dishes, pots and pans, etc. Pool is fantastic ! As long as you can overlook how old the house and everything is and the drive to get there, you will have a great time on this gorgeous very private property!
4.9
The home and property was beautiful and accommodated a large group. Check-in and check-out was easy and the hosts were easy to reach when needed. We truly enjoyed staying here and overall it was a very positive experience. We did not get to use the pool due to cooler weather but the fantastic views from the back patio made up for it.
My only neutral comment is that the hosts stayed in another house on the property and accessed the connected garage during our stay.

This vintage Canyon Home is a hidden gem, so much more than pictured and far beyond the description. It is spacious inside and very comfortable. The views of the ocean, the canyon and the mountains from the patio and from the extraordinary gardens are beyond spectacular. That said, the home is fully equipped, uniquely decorated and the owners are very easy to communicate with and most interesting to talk to. The weather did not cooperate the 10 days of my stay so we were unable to enjoy the beautiful pool. If you are seeking privacy in quiet paradise this is a place for you. My family loved it and my granddaughters got to observe so much beauty in nature in an environment so different from their home in CT.

We could not have been more impressed with the location, views, cleanliness, and communication by the owners. We absolutely loved our stay in this amazing home and will always recommend it to people visiting Santa Barbara!

We had a great stay with my family, the place was really beautiful, clean and the check in was easy.
Thank you,

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Michael and Hilary’s meticulously maintained home in the canyon. Our daughter enjoyed taking in views from the tree swing and drawing in the treehouse while we lounged poolside. The property abounds with scents from blooming citrus trees, and cactii and succulents abound. There are instructions and recommendations in a binder and throughout the house that are helpful in exploring Santa Barbara as well as in preserving this gem for the next guests. We’ll definitely be staying here again!

First off, the owners Michael and Hillary are amazing. They are both warm and friendly. The property is incredible and large enough for my family of six for each of us to have our room to run around and do whatever. We upgraded to have the pool heated which my daughter took full advantage of. Michael was very kind and took time to personally show me how to roll back the pool cover.
While this is an older house, it is well maintained and we didn't have any issues. Take advantage of the swings up on the hill, swim in the awesome pool, take the kids up to the multi level treehouse, BBQ (indoors or out), or just take in the amazing views of Santa Barbara and the surrounding hillside.
Initially, I was a little put off when Hillary told me that they live on-site. We're very private people and I didn't know what to think about that. However, The house that Michael and Hillary live in is across the street. In my opinion it does not even qualify as living on-site and they are such amazing hosts that we never even knew they were there.
We went to the mission, Rocky Nook Park to do a little exploring, and the Zoo. If you're looking for a great spot to eat out, I'd suggest Boathouse at Hendry's Beach. Several of us had the fish & chips, my wife had the Tuna, and my daughter had the seafood pasta...oh and don't forget the creme brulee. All courses are large portions and cooked to perfection.
4.9
We had a great stay. Property was in ideal location to access Santa Barbara and have a great view.
4.9
What a fantastic stay! Hilary and Michael are lovely hosts (willing to go above and beyond), and I can't say enough about their wonderful home. Santa Barbara hills, a great pool, and a house full of character and charm—it doesn't get better than that. My friends and I only left Sunday, and we already miss it. If you are looking for the perfect Santa Barbara getaway, you found it. Thanks again for having us; we'll be back!

We spent a week at this lovely house tucked away in the hills above the Santa Barbara Mission. It was wonderful! The owners, Hilary and Michael were very tentative and helpful with anything we needed and we felt very comfortable during our stay. Beautiful views, fun property to our family to explore, close to the Botanical Gardens, and a few minutes from downtown Santa Barbara. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back at a different time.

We took our 6 adult kids to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary to where we met and lived, we came from 3 different states. The place was magical, so unique in the actual home and the decor was fascinating. Very clean and the view was incredible. The property was fun with swings that are on the hill and a great tree house that made us wish we had the grand kids. We were in Goleta quite a bit so it was easy to go to all the spots in Santa Barbara and Goleta. The owners live nearby and were very friendly to make our stay great. We would come again!

We were looking for a hideaway, a place to unplug, share laughter and decompress. This house did not disappoint. Hilary and Michael were amazing hosts and we are looking forward to coming back again. We had 4 adults and 4 kids. Blessed and thankful!!

We had a fantastic stay in Hillary and Michael’s stunning house in the hills of Santa Barbara. Our party consisted of four kids (5-14), and four adults. It was the perfect home for us: Incredibly unique and charming, roomy kitchen and living rooms spaces for everyone to hang out, incredible views, and the fabulous pool that we used daily.
Hillary and Michael made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Very grateful we were able to rent this house and would absolutely come back. Thank you Hillary and Michael!

This is an awesome house! Its got some quirky mid-century modern stuff going on but it definitely passes the vibe check. Kitchen is well stocked, the pool and property are beautiful with gorgeous mountain and ocean views. Michael and Hilary are wonderful, attentive hosts. Highly recommend!

If you’re looking for a place to get away and relax, this is the place. Our host was great. They responded quickly to all our questions. The view is awesome from their property. I would definitely stay here again.

The pictures don’t do it justice. It’s beautiful inside and out. We had a great time in the pool, which seemed larger than a lot of hotel pools. The bedrooms were large and lots of room for all our stuff. We loved the large living room which gave us plenty of space to be together.
