About this house rental
Mountainside Lodge is located in the heart of historic downtown Harper's Ferry, and in the middle of Harper's Ferry National Historical Park. This one-of-a-kind vacation rental is located in a 2-1/2 story brick federal-period building built in the 1830's. The house shares the building with a family-style restaurant (The Rabbit Hole) and a very popular gift and jewelry shop, The Vintage Lady. The house was originally 2 townhouses, and the center walls were removed in the 1970s to create a large open space on the 1st floor. While the house's exterior painting scheme reflects this original configuration and looks like 2 separate units, the vacation rental spans both spaces (see photo). The building was used during the civil war by both Confederate and Union Armies, primarily as an infirmary/hospital, and is a stop on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour.
The first floor of the house features a large open living room/dining room, a full modern kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch with fantastic mountain and river views and views of Harpers Ferry gap. The inside space features hard-wood floors, exposed brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling (many of the beams are original hand-hewn), and large windows looking onto the mountains and the Potomac River. There is a Roku TV with cable, DVD player, VCR, games and toys, and a 10-seat dining table on the 1st floor. A highchair is available upon request. In addition to modern amenities, the house is decorated in fantastic period antiques.
The second floor has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a laundry room w/ full-sized washer and dryer, and offers views of the Potomac River. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a comfortable full-size futon (comfortable for 1 adult or 2 children). The second bedroom has a Queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom has a twin/full bunk bed (twin on top; full on bottom). The configuration is ideal for two families (4 adults and up to 5 kids), 2-3 couples, or 6-7 friends! All three bedrooms have TVs and DVD players and comfy sheets, mattresses and pillows.
The building sits atop a steep hill, and there are 65 stairs leading down to the 2 parking spaces reserved for the vacation rental in the rear of the building. The front-door to the house is at street-level, so door-to-door drop-off of luggage is possible.

This was a really interesting house in the perfect location. There was plenty of space and we had everything we needed.

This property was as advertised. Beautiful , full of character, clean and so comfortable. The location was perfect. The hosts were so very responsive even though our concern was of our own making. Would stay here again for sure. Thanks Jill, Rich and John

The house was beyond expectations!.. We love being in Harpers Ferry and our accommodations plus Jill, the owner, made the short stay simply exceptional. Next time we come back to Harpers Ferry this is the only lodging we want to be in!!!! THANK YOU to JILL and The AMAZING STAFF at " The Rabbit Hole"....

I loved everything about this trip. My family and I went for 2 nights to explore the town and do some hiking. The house was perfect, right in the center of town, clean, and fit right in with the whole feel of Harper’s Ferry. I highly recommend doing the ghost tour and hiking The Maryland Heights trail.

Perfect location in Harpers Ferry. Beautiful view from the veranda of Maryland Heights and the Potomac/Shenandoah confluence. Parking included for two cars, which is very important in a town where it is so hard to find decent parking. The living space is as advertised: clean and comfortable. The noise from the restaurant dies down well before bedtime. We would stay here again!

Me and my wife decided to get married at this lovely property in the heart of historical Harper's Ferry. Very spacious and all the amenities one could ask for, plus two parking spaces came with the listing. Fantastic views of the Potomac and the railroad station across the way. Not only did our wedding guests enjoy the ceremony was great that we could include our dog in the festivities and have him stay with us. All-in-all a fantastic experience!

This is probably our 6th time staying here with different family members. Always fun to be engulfed in history. The view was awesome and the fall colors made it even better! There's lots of games & indoor activities if you get tires of the cool shops. Our favorite activity is walking to the river. The weather this time was even warm enough to get into the water! Not me...but our dogs did! AND we just found out that this marvelous host/owner rents out a place directly across the street! Sooo...if you have an extra large family or group, you can go at the same time! It's called Lookout Inn.

The perfect spot in the heart of Harpers ferry overlooking the train station and the bustle below. Clean and well appointed with everything we needed and more!

I am so disappointed. We checked into the beautiful home! Great location! Everything was going great… until evening. Some sort of bugs were swarming through the air conditioning units!! Landing all over the bedding! We thought it was just upstairs They were coming through all the units!! We left after only being there 7 hours. Host was notified. We received partial refund. But vacation was ruined.

Great location and beautiful views of Harper's Ferry! Place was exactly what we were looking for. It was clean, an easy check in and communication with Jill was great. Hope to be back again!

Myself, my husband and another couple stayed here a week and had a great time. The home was very clean. The kitchen is well stocked. The building is very old so expect the quirks that come with that. The train station is very near so the trains do come through day and night sporadically. Some nights you not hear any and the next you might hear three. If this is going to bother you then this might not be the place for you. If you can live with that then you will absolutely love it here, as we did.
Jill is a wonderful host, very prompt in responding to any questions. The property sits above the best restaurant in Harpers Ferry. When you walk out the front door, you are just steps away from all of the shops, restaurant/bars and park. Also there are great hiking trails you can just walk to. It was so much fun staying here, I would not consider staying anywhere else if I’m ever in the area again. Highly recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Our group consisted of two 30-year olds, two 60-year olds and a baby. We found the place to be very spacious, well-equipped, clean, and comfortable. We loved the welcome book - so thorough and organized. The location was awesome; so nice to be able to walk to the nearby attractions and restaurant right underneath (noise dies down by 9/10ish which was a plus). Really the only big negative to point out is the water pressure in the showers were not great. Also, the train goes by pretty often, all hours of the night, with could get a little bothersome. Otherwise, I definitely recommend and would stay again!

What a wonderful rental! We had an event to attend in Harpers Ferry Historical Park and this place was right at the heart of everything. It was just a few steps (literally!) to terrific eateries and shops, not many more to the park itself and we were afforded lovely views of the mountains. Be forewarned: it could be a little noisy (trains, conversation from the restaurant directly below the house, vehicle traffic outside the front door, old house creaks, etc.) but none of that really took anything away from our stay. Great communication with the owner (always a plus) who kindly accommodated a request for late checkout. Would definitely rent again!

We had an amazing time! Loved the house and the history of the house. Great location! I love Harpers Ferry and I would rent this house again. I rented it for my nieces birthday and I would like to make it a yearly tradition! The hosts were awesome and the parking situation is great. Parking is very limited in Harpers Ferry so it was nice to have access to parking. Can't wait to go back!

Our family, including the grandparents and little ones (infant and preschooler) stayed at this home for two nights and really enjoyed ourselves. The home is well stocked, and in a perfect location. As Harper's Ferry can get busy and parking becomes tight, this home is right in the middle of everything, thus alleviating this concern (the home includes 2 parking spots!). Traveling with youngsters (stroller) and seniors with limited mobility, getting around town from this home was a piece of cake. The house itself is charming and was very clean. It has a beautiful view of the train stain (which our 3 year old loved). We hope to come back again! Also, the owner, Jill, was a pleasure and made everything very smooth and convenient. Thank you!
We'd highly recommend this property!!

Wow! Can’t beat the location and the house was amazing. It was even better in person than the pictures online. Great for our large family. Some of us are slightly dimwitted and had a hard time figuring out how to use the lockbox, but the smarty in our group was able to figure it out and educate us.

Perfect
Very nice and comfortable home in a perfect location. We enjoyed the views and activity from both the deck and in front of the home. Though hilly, both my father and mother n law, both over 80, could navigate the hills taking their time. Enjoyed Harper's Ferry Brewery too, short drive. Owners were very responsive to all our questions.

4 State Challenge Stay
Great spot! We stayed at the house and completed the 4 state challenge over 2 /12 days, so nice to walk out the door right to the AT. Perfect location for hiking, site seeing, and relaxing. The house was well supplied with all kitchen items, coffee, books and games. Jill was awesome and very accommodating to our group :). Great memories were had by all. Thank You, Jill

Historical property in National park
It doesn’t get much better than this. Close to nature and hikes and a wonderful deck to enjoy the Mountain View. House is very cool. It’s an older home and we appreciated the quirks and character that come with the type of historical property.
The owners could not have been nicer and more accommodating. Let us in early. Great communication.
Wifi works very well. Kitchen stocked. Bottle of wine waiting for us. Plenty of comfy bedding and towels. Awesome selection of books and games. Lots of train info (the train runs adjacent to the property).
Would definitely stay here again.

Home base for Friend's Weekend
We looked this place! We choose it due to the excellent location and walkability, but the photos doubt really due the house justice. The kitchen was large enough for all three of us to cook (and we loved the heated floors!). We spent most of our time in the very large living room, enjoying the pellet stove on an exceptionally cold weekend. We hiked up to Maryland Heights and had a big lunch at The Rabbit Hole downstairs. Jill was a great host and very communicative, and even though we didn't have any problems at all, I would have issues to get to help fast if we did. I world recommend this place to anyone looking for a few days away from real life.

Absolutely Charming!
Harpers Ferry is a little town out of the Hallmark channel. The house was perfect. We had everything we needed to feel right at home. Communication with Jill was amazing. She is very responsive and accommodating. My husband, three children and a friend (all teens) really enjoyed our time there. There is plenty to do around town and many little shops. We made many day trips into Virginia, DC, and Philly. Harpers Ferry’s location was perfect for our winter vacation and we are looking forward to returning. This was absolutely the best place we have rented through VRBO.

Wonderful Weekend Getaway
We loved this spacious, comfortable, and elegant home! You need to see in person! There is so much room, great number of bedrooms and bathrooms for our family. Jill and Rich were quick to respond, helpful, and kind. This was a perfect family weekend spot for my family with 2 boys ages 14 and 11. The area has walking and hiking; we were there for the Olde Tyme Christmas weekend in Harper's Ferry. It was lovely; the town and home were beautiful and historic. There was a wonderful restaurant downstairs, The Rabbit Hole. Harper's Ferry Brewery is also a good find for the entire family! Fun shops, good food, and a perfect place to stay! Thank you.

10th Year, 10th Stay
This is a beautiful home and the most well appointed of any I've ever rented in other cities and towns. The location and size are perfect; we never rent any place else. The Rabbit Hole below is an excellent place to dine if you're not up to cooking, but seriously, the kitchen has everything you need to cook and bake - it invites you to use it! This is our 10th visit in 10 years. It's wonderful seeing my kids now doing the cooking and introducing their own friends to this incredibly rich and vibrant town/park/museum. Parking, pellet stove, linens, antiques, WiFi, shopping, hiking, tours, location, location, location. All here! Thanks again for a lovely stay.

Halloween Weekend
My wife and I, along with two very good friends, spent a long Halloween weekend in this property. It is centrally located in Harpers Ferry so we could walk to all the historical attractions and local restaurants. The apartment is very large and well appointed; we had everything we needed during our stay. It was also extremely clean!
Our only disappointment is that we didn’t experience any paranormal activity in an 1830’s historical house during Halloween!
