About this house rental
This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than a five minute drive to the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath for two couples traveling together. Both bedrooms have queen size beds.
Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. There is an extensive DVD video library and numerous CDs. The Roku tv offers local channels and Netflix. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 60' elm tree. There two full bathrooms in the home One has a deep tub/shower. The other is a walk in shower. The second bedroom has a new queen bed. and original art.
The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and BBQ grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by the owner ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.
This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for 2-4 additional guests at additional rate.) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby.
There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture to the the whimsical gardens and the outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house is a fun day time getaway for all ages. So much to explore here!
There is also a two room casita/guesthouse across the driveway with two double beds, lights and heat for additional guests. Guests here can take advantage of the two full baths inside the main house--towels and robes provided . Additional $25 per person per night by prior arrangement. Can be left at check out
For the adventurous the tree house and an Airstream trailer are delightful summer spaces. The tree house has two twins on main floor and a queen in the loft. There is a shaded deck with pasture views. It is built around a huge heritage apple tree. ($25 per person per night)
The Airstream is 1971 vintage with lots of privacy in the back pasture. Big covered porch with mountain views. The interior has been fully remodeled and has a double bed in front room and a twin down the hallway. ($25 per person per night)
***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is your and I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy.
This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden tour.
As with all of my properties, this is dog friendly for well behaved dogs and conscientious owners. Dog sheets for furniture and beds provided. Mutt mitts in box on tree for clean up. $10 charge per dog per night. May be left at departure
It must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

Lovely spot with convenient access and a beautiful yard. The home is comfortable and clean. A little rustic but in a nice way, we enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. The only thing we wished it had was laundry, but we stayed a week and it certainly was not a draw back - would just be a nice add.

The property ground were just beautiful. Love the native plantings. Such a great place to let a dog run around a bit & feel free.
The home itself needs work. The stove smells of propane. We didn't even try the oven. Leaky/loose faucets in kitchen & 2nd bath. House needs a fresh coat of paint & lightening up. Honestly didn't feel clean. I brought my own sheet for dog bed. Oh, the smaller loveseat in the living room needs cleaning or replaced. Such potential here.

Loved the property!! So serene and peaceful

One of the more unique properties we’ve stayed in. A lot of cool antique-like items annd a ton of character. Amazing grounds and only about a mile outside of Taos.

Very special place!

Nice spot for a short stay, did have a slight smell of propane, but checked all knobs on stove and heaters and opened a window and the smell went away, otherwise very cute and tidy place

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 nights at this property. You feel like you are out in the country but are close to everything. We were comfortable, the house was very clean and we loved sitting outside by the fire (we built ourselves and appreciated having wood available on the ready!) 2 of our evenings. Value for the stay was GREAT! Yes the property may seem (to some) like it needs some updating BUT we found the charm, quirkiness and rustic vibe absolutely magical and wonderful!
We stayed in the main adobe house, but did explore the property and peeked through windows. I LOVED the outhouses!!!

This property is a very unique, rural place, and a nice, quiet getaway with all the amenities of the modern world. So, it fit everyone's likes from parents who wanted quiet to teens who didn't want to be away from wi-fi! Our dog loved the huge property where we walked him and we loved the intricacies of the out buildings as well. Such a unique area true to the architecture of Taos. It's was so fun to have the casita on the property where the author John Nichols wrote, the Airstream, and the treehouse! We enjoyed it all.

Perfectly peaceful property. Loved our stay and enjoyed having our dogs with us. The location is perfect- is on land- feels remote but is very close to town. We loved the hot tub and the kids loved the treehouse. The house is full of charm and character. Wind chimes surrounding the property were lovely. The only change we would make is adding a washer/dryer. Thank you for having us!

Very interesting adobe style home. Next time we’re staying more than one day.

Quirky fun place with plenty of comfort. Easy access to town and the mountain.

The house had a very strong smell of natural gas, which made it uninhabitable. Fortunately the owner's phone number was in the house so we could reach her immediately. Also fortunately she was able to move us to another nearby property right away, so the trip ended well despite the initial problem.

Overall, we had a great stay and communication with the host. The place has some quirks, which was fine with our family but might not fit everyone. We would stay here again and would love to try it out in the summer with the additional spaces.

We really enjoyed staying here. The large living room area was perfect for our daughter to spread out her Christmas presents and play. I loved cooking in the kitchen with the natural light. It was easy to keep the place warm. No complaints!

We loved staying at Melissa’s spot! Very homey, great vibe and wonderful southwestern style. Will definitely stay here again!

It was a great stay and we loved the old house and the property. Thank you Melissa.

Would stay again next time we are in town. The communication with Melissa was excellent, and we were able to find everything with ease. The location was perfect in regards to its rural feel, but it was only a 5 minute drive from downtown. The property is beautiful, and there was lots of space to explore and walk around.

…in a charming New Mexican abode house set on beautiful, semi-rural grounds conveniently located on the outskirts of Taos. Wonderful bedding, terrifically outfitted kitchen with the most fabulous O’Keefe and Merritt stove (LOVED cooking and baking with it)! Captivating grounds providing all the nutrients the birds, bees, insects, and critters need to thrive, care and provide for us. Wonderful flowers, lawn, hammock (spent part of an afternoon soaking up the sun in it), and Mellisa’s art work to please the eye. Enjoyed every minute on this lovely property. You will too!

The property is located about a mile from the plaza but very quiet and secluded. Lovely garden with lots of trees. We loved just sitting outside and enjoying the cool breeze and watching the birds. The house is very comfortable but a bit like visiting your grandparents farmhouse.
4.9
Loved the grounds and the privy. Unique place.

Property is beautiful and location is great for taking trips around Taos. Bring your own food supplies if you plan on cooking--the seasonings and oils didn't look fresh. But they do have baking sheets and cooking pans. And they have a charcoal grill too. The younger members of our group loved the hot tub. Bathrooms are updated. Master bedroom decor left us wondering if there is a mystery associated with the place. Hard to describe it, but we enjoyed it thoroughly.

This is our third time to stay here. First time was several years ago. Still the beautiful home and gardens as always. Kids still love the tree house, too. 5 minutes from town, but you feel out in the country. Looking forward to our next stay.
4.9
The property was secluded, with lovely flower gardens and outdoor space. The house was charming, with plenty of space and had all the necessities for cooking. We had no issues of any kind and felt at home our entire stay. We would definitely return.
4.9
Grounds were beautiful, great house and very clean! We had a great time and enjoyed the huge trees and green grass!
4.9
This home is appointed with beautiful primitive antiques and has all of the comforts needed for a great getaway. We especially loved the patio and all of the flowers.
Melissa answered any question we had in a prompt manner and was good to point us in the direction of sites to take in. Taos Plaza is a short 10 minute drive. We did hear some dog barking at night and a rooster in the morning but this was not a negative thing for us; adds to the charm of this remote oasis. We did not use the hot tub or outdoor shower but they are nice amenities to this unique property. Both beds were comfortable and the mattress heating pad is especially nice on the chilly mountain nights.
The 1949 gas stove is so cool and we prepared several meals with it.
If you are wanting a house for 2 couples away from the city, this is a great spot!

Although further from the village than we would have liked our Treetops unit 10 experience was good. Clean, well equipped the unit allowed our group to enjoy our meals. The unit does need to upgrade many of it’s basics however….small and large appliances, beds, etc. as it is showing it’s age.
Overall though our group had a good time at Treetops.

We were unable to stay at this property due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, so I can’t speak to the property itself — but Melissa swiftly and easily relocated us to another fantastic place to stay and our holiday was great. Much appreciate her efficiency and effectiveness in dealing with the situation!

The property over all was very nice and antique. I am although very disappointed with the poor communication between the property manager Melissa. I messaged her through VRBO once I booked my stay back in September and I got no response. I messaged her a day before my stay and no reply again. There was a horrible gas leak smell in the house and I messaged her about it it the day of my stay and still she did not reply to me. Our family did like the home but unfortunately we’re not able to stay in the house for long without getting a headache from the gas leak smell. My dad spoke to a neighbor and they mentioned the owners knew of the gas leak but it was too expensive for them to get fixed at the moment.. although I completely understand, If there is a gas leak in the house i would recommend not renting the place until fixed as that is a major issue. I would have been much happier and given 5 stars if it wasn’t for the poor communication with property manager.

The property was very cute. Loved the decor and beautiful antiques and art. Beds were a little uncomfortable for my liking. The disappointing part was that no cleaning service had come. We had to find linens to make the beds and had to empty trash and wipe down bathroom counters from previous guest. After a long day of travel with kids this was less than an ideal way to start out stay. Someone did come the next day to pick up dirty linens. We did encounter a push maid on our way out. Again less than ideal.
4.9
Property is much as described. Main house is old, but updated bathrooms. Kitchen and patio are fun. Casita is just beds. Interesting history. Convenient to everything Taos. All had a good time.
4.9
An original adobe home on 2 acres with lots of whimsical art in and outside the home. It is close to town but in a quiet, secluded area with lots of trees. I would stay here again.
4.9
Taos is one of our favorite places! Beautiful setting!
4.9
Very cute and charming place. Funky fun and retro vibe. Great location with a wonderful garden feel, off the beaten path. Be prepared for rural living, however. Neighbors on one side had early morning roosters doing their thing, while neighbors on the other side had a dog that rarely stopped barking. We only stayed in the main house, did not access the treehouse or Airstream.
4.9
Beautiful and unique setting--we loved sitting in the backyard and watching the hummingbirds--but still close to town. Great place to unwind.
4.9
This was as expected and we all felt like we were in a private oasis. Sitting on the patio we saw plenty of hummingbirds and even had a family of ducks for a day that walked around the property.

Charming House
This is a very interesting old house. It is charmingly decorated. It sit in a lush peaceful yard. The paintings and sculptures throughout the house and yard are fascinating, We loved sitting in the hot tub.
If you have significant mobility issues, beware. I fell and injured my knee just before the trip and discovered that, although this is a single story house, there are big an little step transitions from room to room throughout.
I think there may be a small gas leak in the stove, I hope that when Melissa looks into this it is a fixable part of this charming old stove.
4.9
Great authentic old adobe home with wonderful outdoor spaces. Very comfortable and well-supplied indoors. Perhaps because of property’s age, could use some deep cleaning of nooks and crannies, especially in kitchen. Loved it and would return, but expect sparkle at these prices!
