We had high hopes for our stay in San Gerardo de Dota, and Lauraceas Lodge more than met them. The lodge has four spacious cabin/treehouse style rooms, so it's a small hotel compared to others in the valley. Although they overlook the road, being relatively close to the bottom of the valley meant the road was quiet and at no point did we feel like this was a negative - the bubbling noise of the Savegre River (just across the road) was an everpresent and relaxing sound.
The room was comfortable, with two very comfy beds. No air conditioning means that in the afternoon with the windows closed it was a little stuffy - but easily solved by opening the windows for a while. The quantity of duvets provided for the beds are more than sufficient for cold mornings (we stayed in January), and the provided coffee helped too.
The food in the restaurant manages to be simultaneously delicious, moderately priced and of large serving sizes. For an indulgent treat, the happy hour at the bar with a slice of cake is a fun way to spend an hour in the afternoon. The restaurant and bar were generally quiet, and never crowded or noisy - perfect.
It wouldn't be possible to write a review without mentioning the birding. Lauraceas helped us book Quetzal Tours on two mornings, which were relatively affordable compared to equivalent tours offered elsewhere in the valley (and for the same overall experience). The guides were friendly and knowledgeable and we had a great time. The standout highlight though was returning from the 0515 start for the Quetzal tour for breakfast at the restaurant, only to see another pair of Quetzals in the trees above the river - easily our best view. Watching the entire restaurant empty onto the street - staff and guests alike - was a unexpected but genuinely pleasant moment in our trip. Away from Quetzals, the Lauraceas Gardens (100-200m down the road) are beautiful, and attract a number of birds including some mountain specialities.
100% recommend.
It would have been better if we could have stayed for longer! I have nothing negative to say about this stay.

This place is amazing. The flowers, the gardens, the birds and the river! The families here work hard and love to share their community. The trout is amazing! Lots to do and see, yet sit back and relax!

Stylish room with modern facilities and large bathroom. Food and staff lovely.
Couldn't really sit out on the balcony-was too small and faced the side rather than the river. Was a bit cold at night. Need to supply slippers and robe! A mini fridge would have been good.

Prachtig uitzicht, fijne ruime kamers
We kregen gelijk een extra kacheltje.
Bizar hoe koud het kan worden.
Maar er liggen al genoeg dekens op het bed.
Ontbijt is heerlijk, diner ook top en lieve Mensen.
Niets was heerlijk

The staff were kind and attentive. They helped us coordinate a quetzal watching tour (a must!), and they offer a good discount at a great nearby spa. The room was spacious and we loved having views of the trees and the river from our bed. The food was so good we had dinner here twice, despite having other great choices in town!
It gets quite cold here at night; we would have liked to have had a heater in the room on our first night. The staff did offer a portable one upon check in, but we didn't think we'd need it so didn't request one until our second night. Our sleep quality improved significantly!

Everything was wonderful - staff, cabin, restaurant, surroundings. Excellent value for the money spent.
Food was very good - breakfast, lunch and dinner. Good selection, very tasty and nice presentation.
It was cold at night and the little electric heater was not really effective, partially due to the high ceilings. A more powerful heater would have made the evenings/early mornings a bit more comfortable. However, once in bed it was warm enough due to the many blankets and duvets provided.

Great location, very new, super clean and excellent service. We liked that it provided free access to their botanical garden also behind the property there are avocado and apple trees.

This property is outstanding, beautiful architecture in a stunning landscape. The cabins are generous in size with quality linen and nicely furnished. Their botanical garden down the road is lovely to wander through. The restaurant serves top quality food in very generous quantities. The staff are professional and friendly. This is one of the best properties we have stayed in over 9 weeks of travel.

- Beautiful accommodation with detached cottages in a very nice location directly besides the river. We even saw the Quetzal from the hotel on the other side of the river
- Very attractive interior with very comfortable beds (with warm blankets). In addition, high quality care products (shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap) are provided.
- The staff was very nice
- We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel's restaurant and both were exceptionally tasty
- On our arrival day a horseback riding tour was organized for us, which we enjoyed very much
- To the hotel belongs a beautiful botanical garden with many hummingbirds, which you can visit as a hotel guest for free
- A hike (~5 km round trip, you should have hiking experience and wear good shoes) through the cloud forest to a beautiful waterfall starts almost directly in front of the hotel

Very friendly staff, great breakfast included in the price. The also offers lunch and diner options, which were very good. The was spacious, had a very nice indoors deck facing the river. Beds were very comfy. The lodge had a botanical garden which is nice and free of charge. Very close to the trail that leads to a very nice Waterfall.

Spacious cabin with beautiful view out on to the trees, stream and hills. We didn't go anywhere else to eat in the 4 days and enjoyed every meal. The family who run the place and all of the other staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The Lauraceas Garden, about 100m down the road, is very special and was created with care and love. We've never seen SO many beautiful birds, especially the humming birds -- they were just non-stop. Bring warm clothes: in the evening and first thing in the morning it can be very chilly up there in the mountains but during the day, once the sun had come up over the hills, we had glorious weather.

very large room, in your own private cabin. very clean. beds very comfortable. best shower of our Costa Rican trip. beautiful view on the river, extremely quiet. the restaurant have excellent food. the tour to see the Quetzal was definitely successful, cause the guide had his own private spot where many of these beautiful birds were like waiting for us. we recommend strongly a visit of this beautiful valley and a stay in this very nice and new lodge.

The hotel is in a beautiful spot and everything is very comfortable and immaculately presented. The garden is particularly lovely and we spent a lot of time watching the hummingbirds there. The restaurant is also excellent.

Huge and comfortable rooms. Very comfortable beds. Extraordinary delicious food. Nice location, nice people.
It was really far too cold at night to sleep well.
1.0 / 10.0
Decoration of the room.
The room was so cold that we barely managed to sleep, even after asking for 2 heaters to try and get some warmth.
The way the shower is designed makes it flood the bathroom.
As a result, it wasn't good value for money.

The hotel was in a stunning location, right next to the river in the bottom of the San Gerado de Dota Valley. Every morning we were treated to flocks of parakeets flying around and hummingbirds in the grounds. The rooms were spotless and equipped to a high standard.... Superbly comfortable beds too. The staff were wonderful, and the restaurant food was excellent. All in all a fantastic place to stay
Everything was great. 👍
