Excellent service; great decor and vibe; great rooftop for gathering, views , and cocktails
No AC was a surprise, though portable fan did the trick

very friendly and helpful staff, helped us book a really good value night tour which we loved and went out of their way to offer us help with whatever they could. breakfast and cocktails were delicious. very nice modern, clean and comfy rooms. bar upstairs is lovely at sunset
it is up a very steep hill and a bit of a walk from other restaurants / bar. it was pricey compared to other hotels we stayed in across Costa Rica but seemed to be the area of Monte verde / Santa elena in general

We loved the roof top bar and enjoyed great cocktails looking out to the amazing views. The breakfast was exceptional and the staff very friendly and helpful in booking tours and transport for us.
We would have liked coffee making facilities in the room

The rooms are spacious and well equipped. The terrace has an excellent ire of the sunset. The hotel has been open a year or so and they are working out restaurant hours but the kitchen is skilled so don’t hesitate to ask for sandwiches! The portobello one was fabulous. Working with heir concierge in advance made all of our arrangements seamless.
It’s not easy to walk to town but $5 in a taxi gets you there.

Super clean and lovely hotel. The staff was friendly!
Nothing to dislike in my opinion.

The hotel design and rooftop bar are beautiful. The hotel is very modern and clean and from our searches of hotels prior to our trip, this is unique for the area. The staff on reception and the lady working on the bar were so helpful and friendly and we enjoyed their tips for places to go/eat in the local area (such as going to lunch at Casem Coop and Taco Taco - which were both really good!). Breakfast was delicious - the portions were huge and a brilliant start to the day. The view from the rooftop bar at sunset is unreal, you get a view out to the Nicoya Gulf and its stunning. We loved the setting so much we chose to get engaged there :), so we will remember it forever.
Cocktails were amazing but a little pricey vs other similar hotels we went to on our trip. We would have appreciated a happy hour so we could try more of them! Monteverde was very windy while we were there and the room was very loud due to that. The door to the balcony had been blown so it didn't shut properly so you could hear the wind more than usual - staff were helpful trying to sort the problem.
Would have appreciated some luggage stands for our suitcases and pegs for our raincoats, especially as there was limited storage in the room.
It would be a bonus to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room as although staff were very happy to make us one, tea was quite expensive from the bar.

Staff was extremely welcoming and accommodating. Facilities are very clean and well managed.
Our room was at the corner of the property and right near the road, which was loud. The seasonal winds also shook the terrace barriers outside as well as the door, which were not reinforced, adding to the noise at night. There wasn’t much natural light in the room or privacy on the terrace.

Ocotea is a locally owned modern new hotel with great views over Monteverde. The hotel has 22 tastefully designed rooms and very comfortable beds. We were told that the hotel opened about a year ago. We like the sustainable, eco-friendly approach of this hotel. For example, they use rooftop solar for water heating.
The rooftop bar offers a spectacular view over Monteverde and is a great place to view the sunset. The staff was super nice and we felt very welcome. What really sets this hotel apart is the food. Breakfast is a la card and one has to order the day before but what you get is incredible. Try the parfait - I have never tasted anything better. The hotel just started serving dinner and we ate at the restaurant one night - best food we had in Costa Rica. The chef is local and so are all the cook and staff. We would come back just for the food!
As this is a very new hotel there are a few things that still could use some work. The modern rooms do not have any space or hardly any space to put your luggage. We stayed for two days and we like to be able to put our luggage “out of sight” but the rooms only have a coat rack with a few hangers, no closet, no dresser. Also, we had booked a deluxe suite, which is basically just a room with king size bed and a bathroom and one small table with a cube chair, very nice but not a lot of space and not much of a suite.

Both, place and hotel are amazing. The restaurant was excellent! Breakfast could not have been better! The beds are very comfortable, the design of the rooms is beautiful. There is lovely garden around the hotel, with lots of green plants, flowers and orchids. And the staff was always very nice and always helpful.
We really enjoyed 2 of our 4 nights!
BUT: We had BEDBUGS in our room. After two nights, we saw red bites scattered all over the feet. They were very itchy. The third morning it had been getting worse. We went to the owner and were told: “No, that is nothing, nothing dangerous, do not worry, you are in Costa Rica, there are a lot of insects.”
My friend checked our bed sheets and found some black dots. It looked like bedbug feces. We asked for changing the room. They immediately agreed even though they did not believe us. My friend checked the other room nr. 9 and found a dead bedbug on the sheet. The owner allowed us to take another room, but from the beginning it was clear that in her opinion my friend and I were two hysterical women. The owners mother and daughter always repeated: “It is not dangerous, you are in Costa Rica there are a lot of insects. We kept trying to explain, that we know that bedbugs are not dangerous at all! But still that we do not want to spread them! If you ever had bedbugs in your home/hotel/apartment, you know, it is more than difficult to get rid of it.
Finally, they called a doctor from nearby. He let us know that the bites were bites from an insect. He gave us a prescription for a cream and an antihistamine. One of the owners drove us to the next city, Santa Elena, so we could get the medicine. We changed rooms, we gave our clothes to the laundry. The owners were supporting. We certainly do not want to complain about that! For us it was difficult that they did not believe in having bedbugs. They always mentioned: “We are in Costa Rica, it is normal having insects, the hotel is new, it can not be bedbugs. In La Fortuna we saw another, well qualified doctor. She said: Yes, these are bites from bedbugs. Then, we wrote an e-mail to the hotel suggested to call a terminator for number 6 and 9. We have not heard anything yet.

Room was excellent.
A little too formal.

everything!! modern and sleek ambiance, attention to detail, aroma-therapeutic bath utensils. brand new (meaning some minor teething issues as well). amazing breakfast. very professional and attentive staff providing good recommendations which absolutely cares for the guests. healthy drinks (smoothies, coffee, tea, ….) inclusive.
we recommend this property and would come again.
a few minor points! no ventilation in the room except leaving the door open. no heating. no a/c. room quite dark. it surprised us that there was no lift, we didn’t need but it felt like a missing accessory in a to notch hotel with a top floor bar. without this being a criticism, it felt as if someone analysed the main hotel build cost drivers and made cuts to stay in budget. pretty steep prices.

The hotel is brand new, and has the most incredible views of Monteverde. It’s ideally situated a little up the road from the main town, so it’s beautifully peaceful. The main town is a little busy / touristy (to be expected). But the real thing that made this hotel stand out was the impeccable service. Nothing was too much trouble - and even with dietary requirements (gluten-free) they arranged for some special GF pancakes and bread. We loved our stay and would happily return!
Not a dislike, but it’s up quite a steep hill, so you would need to access it with a car.

Room was amazing. Staff amazingly accomodating. Breakfast was delicious.
There is no AC in the rooms. Didn't seem like it would be a problem when we arrived since it was chilly but after leaving the patio doors closed, it got pretty warm. Had to leave the patio doors open all night. We were offered a cooler room when we arrived but didn't think we'd need it.

no character, one very poor member of staff on front desk, a bit soul-less

Great location. Modern, clean and comfortable rooms. Lounge on the third floor has great views. Staff was super friendly and attentive. Breakfast was nicely plated and tasted great.
Value proposition was not there. Too expensive for what it offered and calling the rooms "Villas" is not accurate. The rooms are nice, but by no stretch of the imagination are they "villas".

We loved staying at Ocotea - it is such a beautiful hotel. The only downside was that the restaurant wasn't open yet, and there was nowhere to sit and relax outside other than your balcony

beautiful hotel! we loved the design. We enjoy modern hotels and they were the only ones in monteverde. the service was impeccable and everyone was really kind! We loved our stay and would go again!

Brand new, modern property, well designed with a great views over the cloud forest (watch the sunset from the top floor lounge area).
The staff is amazing. They accommodated to all of our wishes, helped us to sort tours and other needs. A competent and friendly team.
Breakfast was superbe too. Plenty of good food and great coffee. Quick and thoughtful service at breakfast. On the second day they remembered my request for lactose-free milk w/o me telling them.
Nothing to dislike.

the most luxury and chic hotel we stayed at during our entire Costa Rica trip.
the design is super modern. it’s brand new. we were told that we’re the first couple who lived in the room. we’re from San Francisco. the hotel will still be considered as a top notch boutique hotel even in the US.
the view is spectacular. they have a third floor where you can get drinks and watch the sunsets.
the staff is very professional and attentive. they made sure we had everything we need. they even called our driver to make sure we’re safe when we stayed out past 10pm. so sweet! While we are there, the spa is not ready. but when we asked for a massage, the owner arranged it for us for the same night.
the facility is extremely clean and high quality. from the bath soap to the lotion, to the furnitures of the room, I love them all. we stayed at a lot of luxury hotels around the world, and ocotea didn’t disappoint.
the breakfast! they have the most lush breakfast we ever had during the entire stay. it has açaí bowl and the presentation is definitely IG ready.
it’s more than $500/night, the same price you pay for a standard room at Ritz Carlton in San Francisco. So my expectation is a bit high.
two changes would make my stay perfect:
1. please install a screen to keep the flies away and breezes in. the room doesn’t come with AC. you don’t need it at night but our room faced by the Sun in the afternoon so it gets really hot. also, after two showers at night, the room steams up quickly and gets really hot. however, you can’t open the window because it attracts so many mosquitoes and other flies, so you have to put up with the heat and wait for it to go away.
2. maybe because the hotel is on a hill, so the water pressure is low, and sometimes it switches from hot water to cold.
nonetheless, the entire experience is amazing, and the highlight of our entire trip. we’ll definitely return next time when we’re in town and highly recommend it everyone!
