Great guesthouse for a short stay in Onomichi. The house itself is old with beautiful views any time during the day and you can see the stunning sunrise/sunset if the weather is good enough. The food especially the cheese cake is good too. It is very close to the temple thus a perfect place for people who enjoys Buddhism/Zen culture to get there and pray. The location is also close to the viewing platform on the mountain, the Onomichi museum, and the Cat Alley. The restroom and the showers are clean and convenient.
A few things to note when ppl want to book here: 1) the mount climbing can be a bit tiring in summer with heavy luggage so you’d better put the suitcase in the JR station lockers or use the Yamato service; 2) soundproofing is bad due to the characteristics of the old house, but earplugs help a lot

景色と建物が素晴らしかった。
景色のためには致し方ないが、階段はきつかった。
日中戻りたいときももう一度階段を登る気にはならなかった。

Amazing view from the room and terrace. Lovely staff and easy check in/out. Walk up the hill is not so bad. Instant coffee and teabags are offered.
Depending on who your neighbours are it’s a little noisy.

Beautifully restored old building high on the hillside with fantastic views down over the town and bay. Super helpful staff. Many lovely small touches that were beyond what I would expect in a hostel type property
Important to be prepared for the steps and to bring small light packs. Leave main luggage in a locker in town or use Japan’s excellent luggage forwarding service to send it on to your next hotel

The most stunning view to wake up to!

it’s a beautiful building with outstanding views. it’s great you can use the bar area in the evening..
I would bring ear plugs because it is an old building that is not soundproof.
We didn’t hear the neighbours but could hear the very loud ladies at the end of the corridor.!

Amazing old japanese house. The rooms are traditional with tatami mats, futong beds and sliding doors. Visting this place is a true experience in traditional Japanese culture. The location is also beautiful on top of a hill with the most beautiful over Onomichi. It's also very close to the station, restaurants and the starting point of the biking trail.
If you are in a very bad shape or have problems with walking this might not be a place for you since you have to climb a lot of stairs every time you've been down to the city. But if your health is normal please do yourself a favor and book this place. It's totally worth the effort. And if you have heavy luggage you can have it stored at the JR station very cheap.

A really beautiful place with heritage. Really nice staff, and the main host made insanely good lattes. Warm and cozy. The typical futon set-up. Everything is really made by design. The host makes a great introduction of the place, facilities and room windows are purposefully facing the sunrise. Tip to wait 15-20 minutes after sunrise since the sun comes up from the mountains (so you'll take while to see the yolk!)
Onomichi is a hidden gem! Other than stores closing rather early, there's many cafes up the hills or at the station. Cat alley is really close by it's only more lively during the weekends (art market!) went once on a Thursday vs a Saturday.
It's a great base to do the Shimanami Kaido route too but remember you'll still have to climb the stairs up. A great nature retreat.
I didn't really dislike anything. Steep stairs and thin walls were a given. Apparently bugs are more common during the summer so beware. No convenience stores nearby other than the ones at the station and near the ropeway. so far... Buy everything in one go, get emergency cup noodles since there's barely any food after 3 or 4pm.
The washing machine works but takes insanely long so maybe not the best idea to do laundry here.
I took the hill (google maps) way up than the host's stairs with my luggage. Had a lot of narrow alleyways and slopes but significantly lesser stairs. You could you also take a cab down which costs around 1100~1300 yen from the Museum/park grounds. a 5-10 minute struggle with your luggage up to the temple.

Lovely atmosphere. The bar is open until 11pm and serves some small food and interesting cocktails. The view from the rooms is also gorgeous. The staff were very kind and helpful. We stayed in a futon room which was a great experience.
The walls are pretty thin, and you share a balcony with the other rooms so you can hear the other guests. But everyone was very quiet so it didn't matter too much. The location is also pretty far. You do also have to pay extra for towels.

Amazing, historic property with great views across Onimichi. This property was unlike anywhere else I stayed during my 4 weeks in Japan. The host was very helpful and had a clear passion for the property and area - he gave me pointers for completing the local cycle highway the next day. Fortunately, no one else had booked my particular room for the night so I had it to myself. There was also a cozy bar/cafe downstairs with similarly great views.
The only drawbacks to staying in a traditional guesthouse like this are the walls are quite thin so it's worth bringing earplugs. However, the host was more than happy to provide me with these so no complaints!

The history of the property is amazing and heart-warming. Easy access to Senkoji Temple. The view (looking down Onomichi City and the harbour) is superb. With a short walk to a lookout you can watch beautiful sunset in good weather.
With so many stairs to tackle it is not easy to reach the property. The facilities are basic but if you consider the history of the building it is very acceptable.

wonderful place and a great project to make such a beautiful house available for travelers. perfect view and hospitality.
nothing - everything was fine.

Spot is amazing, the view is incredible. Hard to reach because of the numerous stairs, but the result is worth the effort.
People working there are just the best, plus you will probably met new mates while roaming around the café.
Reaching the place can be difficult for people with walking difficulties and nothing in the house is helping. To reminds for the older as well.

Only 20 min walking from the station. Well located on the temples path.
Authentic old Japanese house with sliding door, tatami and futon, of course it's not sound proof but it's specified in the description and the guests were discrete. Definitely not a problem for me.
I had the big dorm for myself. Nice view.
Convenient kitchen and showers.
Nice outside area, perfect for breakfast in the the sunlight

Location.
Very small expensive single room with uncomfortable futon

classic building and a room with a view.
configuration of property requires lots of shoe changing.

good location. you need to go uphill first but it's all worth it with the view.
many people said this too. if you're light sleeper, you can't stay here. it's really quiet here

I stayed here for one night when I visited Onomichi in August 2022.
This guesthouse is a restored, historical vacation home overlooking the coastal city of Onomichi. I reserved a triple room, which was beautiful and spacious and came with a very comfortable futon as well as air conditioning, which was very welcome for the humid summer night.
The sunrise view from my room and just outside the guesthouse was one of the best I've ever seen. The 1920's themed cafe provided a nice light breakfast and drinks in a relaxed environment. I had the pleasure of having a conversation with the front desk/cafe staff member, and got to learn a lot about the building and the surrounding area.
Figuring out the lock for the shoji doors came with a little difficulty, but a staff member graciously helped me out.

Good view. It's very clean for an old facility. The cafe on the first floor is cute.
As described, you need to walk to get the guest house so need to think about your luggage. You will also consider an extremely simply facility: bring your own towel/ room very very small/ can hear all from next room. From a non Japanese, it's very confused to understand "inside and outside" so need to change your shoes many times. :)

Gorgeous view and a very classic feel. I loved it. I wanna come back with my family next time.

I love the location - it's right under the ropeway on your way to Senkoji temple. If you didn't check the listing thoroughly, I will say that there ARE A LOT OF STAIRS up to the property, however it's worth the walk (and if you arrive in the day you could take the ropeway to the top and walk down). It has a beautiful view, and is a gorgeous venue with attention to quality and detail put into your stay. It has everything you need and the cafe/communal space area is great. The cafe makes great drinks! The rooms are spacious and bathrooms and showers are gorgeous and modern. The owner is great, as well and will answer any of your questions.
So, this is to be expected... but I found a mukade/Japanese centipede in my things in the morning. They had provided freezing spray and mukade (and other creepy crawlies) are to be expected when you're in the mountains, and especially when you're in an older building. Considering everything, it's a small downside and I'd still recommend staying here!

The view looking over Onomichi was amazing - in the evening and in the early morning to see the glowing sky above the town and harbor below was unbelievable - it was worth staying here for that alone!
It was really hard to sleep and I didn't have earplugs - maybe they should offer earplugs if they choose not to soundproof the rooms better. The windows are old and don't keep any noise like the trains, people talking and barking dogs (all night) from the guests even when closed (better windows would also be better for energy use). And the rooms are connected by an open Engawa (front hall) which makes sound travel between rooms as if you are in the same room. The sound also travels from the open floorboards from the cafe below (music and talking from staff to customers or among customers). The showers only being allowed from 3pm to 10pm is also not nice as I wanted to take a shower in the morning. There are also no drink facilities in the room (even a jug of water or teapot would be nice). For the price of the room, it should be a bit better in terms of insulation (window/insulated walls and floorboards) and amenities (tea/water) to show a difference between the most expensive rooms and the cheap dorm room.

Excellent guesthouse in an excellent location. Very comfortable rooms that made it easy to relax after a busy day of walking around Onomichi. The cafe on the first floor was nice, too, and we had a nice breakfast and drinks in the evening. The staff was wonderful, as well.
4.3
Great location, views, and atmosphere. Just be prepared to climb up the steep hill to get to it and know that the sleeping rooms are separated by paper doors so you will here other guests muffled talking.
