About this cottage rental
Tortuga House, located on beautiful Great Exuma in the islands of the Bahamas, is a private and picturesque cottage offering a taste of the “old time Bahamas,” the way it used to be, but with all the modern amenities you need for a relaxing and comfortable vacation. Tortuga is located on the less developed, south shore of the island (but still only about 15 minutes from town), where a “busy day” means that one or two small boats may pass by the property on their way to local fishing spots. (Don’t worry, they won’t see you in the outside shower, they’re too busy looking at the beautiful, blue water!) If the pace of life is too hectic, and you need a place to escape and get back in touch with your family, with nature and with yourself, you’ll love Tortuga!
Tortuga includes two comfortable bedrooms, a single bathroom with shower, and a comfortably furnished, open concept living room/kitchen/dining space. Our gorgeous granite table seats 5 comfortably. We have a variety of puzzles, games and books for family fun, and -- while we have deliberately not included a TV at the property -- with Starlink wifi internet access, you can stream your videos or watch our family friendly DVDs on your computer on the rare rainy day.
Listen to the waves and the breezes through our palm trees from the ocean front queen size master bedroom, while a second couple or two children enjoy their own twin bedroom (which can be converted to a king). Tortuga's kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need if you want to prepare your own meals, including a full range with double oven, full size refrigerator with ice maker, and a dishwasher. A gas grill is provided for outdoor cooking. Adjacent to the living room is a fully furnished, screened sunroom with another dining area, sofa and chairs, leading out to a nicely landscaped yard fronting two small and completely private beaches, including a gazebo and pergola with a hammock for all day relaxation. A private, outside shower is convenient for washing off the salt and sand after your day exploring the island. Lounge chairs and a 1- 2 person kayak as well as a stand up paddle board round out your options for enjoying the property.
The waters of the south side are more shallow and generally calmer than the Atlantic side of the island. Entry from our beaches is gradual and you will find that you can wade out for long distances. Snorkeling around our seawalls and along the shoreline in both directions can be fantastic during higher tides. Sitting in the gazebo, you may see a passing turtle, barracudas, rays, and sharks.
There are few places on the island like Tortuga, where you can enjoy both inspiring sunrises and incredible sunsets! Because of our location, looking off to the west at sunset, you will feel like you are at the edge of the earth, with no other houses in sight. Even our neighbors on the south side tell us that Tortuga has the best sunsets on the island! Previous guests have described their time at Tortuga as "the most relaxing vacation we've ever had." Truly a unique property to enjoy your stay on Great Exuma!

Incredible stay! The photos don't do justice to the beauty of the place! If you're looking for tranquility, combined with a breathtaking ocean, a fully equipped home and impeccable communications with Helen, don't hesitate to book Tortuga House. The hammocks, the lanai to keep the voracious mosquitoes away, the kayaking and paddleboarding - all the ingredients were there to make this place a paradise. Many thanks to Helen for opening the doors to us. I'd recommend renting a jeep to tackle the bumpy, winding road back to your paradise.

My family recently returned from our stay at the Tortuga. The house was perfect had everything we needed. We loved sitting in the gazebo every morning overlooking the stunning water views. My girls enjoyed sitting in the hammock swings to read or just hang.
The Tortuga house is a slice of paradise! Can't wait to return next year.

The Tortuga house had the most magnificent view! The back yard was just gorgeous! We loved sitting outside taking it all in. My husband and I enjoyed using the tandem kayak and paddleboard that was provided as well as the gas grill. The house was cozy and clean and had everything we needed. The screened in back porch was a nice bonus. The bed was very comfortable. We got the best sleep when we were there!
The pictures of the place really don't do it justice. Its heavenly! We would definitely stay there again!

From the moment we arrived we were greeted by the sounds and view of a gorgeous hideaway. With it's own little beach, hammock, gazebo, paddle board, kayak and loungers. Once inside we found a fully furnished and equipped quiet living space to call home for several weeks. AC and ceiling fans in all rooms. Wonderful large screened porch where we enjoyed our home cooked meals prepared on the grill provided. The primary bedroom was roomy and comfortable where we could listen to the ocean all evening long. The second bedroom was smaller with two twins mattresses that were a little firmer than our liking. Although there was no TV, the internet reception was exceptional. We felt the location was spectacular allowing us privacy and yet connected. We were pleased to learn that the road leading in to this property will be resurfaced as many roads in the Exuma's can be challenging. Because we had a small SUV we were able to explore all of Great and Little Exuma island. We hope to return soon!

Tortuga was an amazing home for our trip to Exuma. We traveled with our daughters (age 13 and 17), and the home and property was perfect. Helen was helpful before and during our trip. She explained everything about the house and property before our trip, so we had no surprises and felt very prepared. The property is very secluded, but still easy to get back to George Town and everywhere else on the island. The house was comfortable, well equipped, and clean. The property was beautiful and the water access (plus the kayak and paddle board) was a highlight for our family. We will absolutely stay here again!

Very cozy house with a great view. It’s definitely off the beaten path which makes it very quiet and private. The road back to the house was very rough which we were prepared for. Just rent a small suv at minimum. Very good communication with the owner.

Where do I begin?! This was the most beautiful, majestic places I’ve ever seen! When you follow the exact path of instructions provided by Helen (this is an island so GPS can’t always be in service lol) you will find her Gem of all hidden Gems! I am so grateful for our stay there and for the locals! We made a lot of friends there & now consider them family. Every single time we needed Helen for something or help, she really set us at ease! When the power goes out (remember! It’s an ISLAND 😉) just enjoy it! Make sure your phones / electronics are completely charged at all times because you never know! We really immersed ourselves in their culture. Our daughter is special needs, and this place was PERFECT for her. She is 6 w/ minimal walking experience. That said, the small waves in Helens backyard kept our daughter occupied for hours! Get a 4 wheel drive vehicle for this property! We wanted to give a special shoutout to our “family locals” there at ‘The Car Wash’: Mario, D’Angelo, Ryan, Ashley for helping my family get on your boat, playing “bones” (dominoes) at night and all around great laughs and helping us out w/ our daughter, let alone w/ anything we needed on your island! Another shoutout to, Nitza, for our in-home massages!!! You were so kind and helpful! We DEFINITELY recommend this house to any families out there who are in need of a REAL vacation! Helens house was fully equipped with every single thing you need. THANK YOU ALL!!!

My wife and I stayed at Tortuga house at the end of March. The entire experience was excellent. The owners are very responsive to any questions and the house is perfect for a couple or small family. The waterfront is beautiful. The water on this side of the island is shallow so if you do any boating you need to pay attention to the tides but it’s great for wading, swimming, snorkeling etc. the location was perfect for us because we like a little privacy when relaxing after a busy day of excursions or boating. It is conveniently located about a half hour drive from the airport and about 15 minutes from Georgetown. If you go we would also highly recommend renting a boat from Minns in Georgetown. Great people and their boats are very well maintained. You can cruise all around the harbor, visit some small Cays, snorkel or scuba etc etc. also it is about a five minute boat ride to get to the famous Chat N Chill where you can feed and pet Stingrays. We would also highly recommend doing a full day excursion with Exuma Water Sports. They are about a 55 minute drive from the house but very easy to find and our Google Maps worked flawlessly for directions. They will take you to see and feed endangered rock iguanas, the swimming pigs on pig island, the famous Thunderball Grotto, swimming with Nurse sharks and you will also learn a bit of the local history and see some spectacular homes such as the private island that was owned by Tim McGraw. Highly, highly recommend!!!!!

Our stay at Tortuga was amazing! The property is exactly as described! The location is a perfect hideaway on the south side of the island, offering privacy yet the beauty of Exuma. The property is well stocked for your wants & needs, from the kitchen to the sunroom. The host, Helen, is very nice, helpful & easy to reach. I cannot say enough about this property, what I can say is that we will be back!

A truly stunning location with a very well appointed and beautiful house. Helen's home was the private, out-of-the-way retreat we were looking for, with everything we possibly wanted. It was exactly as described but still exceeded our expectations! Communication was great and clear. Go fish with Drex too, always a good time. Can't wait to return!

Amazing view but house needs a lot of work
We traveled to Tortuga house in July. I am going to try and leave a very detailed review since there is only 1 review for this property so far.
Pros:
The view is amazing. You have your private ocean . The gazebo, hammocks and sunsets are spectacular.
The owner is very responsive. She took my call, sent a repair person and was a great communicator the whole time.
The location is very private.
The AC was working well and kept the house cool.
The garden. The garden is very beautiful.
Cons:
Roads. It is very hard to get to the house. You go through dirt roads for 10 minutes.
Cleaning. We were disappointed with the cleaning before us. The towels (old and with holes in them) smelled like mildew.
The condition of the house. The house is definitely not well maintained. The window screens were dirty, broken and not maintained. The tile was broken in the bathroom. The bathroom is very outdated.
Garbage and garbage disposal. There is no garbage disposal in the kitchen. You are supposed to take your garbage to a garbage collection site 10 min from the house (through very bad roads and away from town).
Laundry. Read carefully. There is no laundry. Your only choice is a coin laundry 10 min away.
The beach. The view is spectacular, but there is not a lot of a beach. It is rocky and small. Not convenient for small kids.
The bugs. There are tons of bugs on this side of the island. Even though the owner fixed the big holes in the screens in the outside porch for us, there were still a lot of holes left. The bugs were getting in and it was impossible to sit there in the evening.
So, in summary, great view, great owners. But the house needs a lot of work. All the linens have to be changed and a lot of repairs need to be made.

Absolutely perfect!
We just spent 9 glorious nights at Tortuga House. It was absolutely perfect for our family. We loved the house, the view, the hammocks, the kayak, and the neighbor's dog who stopped by for visits.
Tortuga feels completely secluded, but it's only 10-15 mins from George Town. Exuma Markets was the most well-stocked grocery store I've seen in any Out Island.
One tip for Exuma-bring plenty of cash with you. One of the ATMs in town withdrew money from our account, but didn't dispense the cash. It was been dealt with by our bank, but was a little bit of a pain. If you have to get cash I would recommend the RBC ATM since they have an actual branch in town.
Helen felt like a friend by the end of our trip and the property manager Drex could not have been more kind to our family. We're grateful for our peaceful vacation and can't wait to visit Tortuga and Exuma again!

Fantastic Vacation Spot
My husband, son, and I stayed at the Tortuga house during our family vacation to Exuma. The house is cute and quaint and the views are nothing short of AMAZING! We had a fantastic vacation. While the backroads to get to the house can seem confusing, it is totally worth it once you get to the house.
We explored the lengthy ocean waters and beach right outside the house and found all sorts of treasures. The hammock and chair swings were perfect for relaxing, reading and just listening to the waves. The sun room was great at night to relax in without having to worry about the bugs and still being able to listen to the waves.
Helen, the owner, was very helpful and easy to communicate with.
The Tortuga house was the perfect spot for our family to stay for vacation. We will absolutely plan to stay again!
