Breakfast was about the only almost half-way decent thing, and even that was late arriving. Basic fare. The shower had hot water.
What a crappy place. Save your money, just don't stay here. The rooms were gross, fairly clean on the outside, but I was afraid to look too deep. You can hear the folks above you at 2am, 3am, 4am....not sure what they were doing up there but I'm sure furniture moving was in the equation. There is zero sound proofing in the place so you could hear every step.

Good cheap option (for Hawaii average).
It was all written in the description. So, not surprises.
No blackout curtains and the internal window was covered just by a carpet (so, not much privacy).
Not a problem for us, but be aware of a lot of birds noise during the night.

Location, breakfast, price
Staying on the first floor, I could hear the people above moving things.

Nothing. Nada.

The bed was comfy and there was a fridge and microwave.
The bathroom has no door, and the shower wasn't clean! There was blonde hair in the drain that was clearly visible.

Las fotos son falsas
No me gusto nada

We were late checking in and the front desk person waited for us to check in. Quaint, sleepy and quiet area near the hustle and bustle was fine for us- we slept well.

Charmig stil.
Luktade illa.
Dörren gick i baklås sista dagen.

Decrepit hotel, extremely noisy, unprofessional staff. Booking.com description of hotel completely false. Photos completely fabricated.

The location was good, close to the city. Breakfast was good.
The property direly needs some renovation. The toilet/bathroom had no door. Our room didn’t have wifi signals. There was no iron (in the whole property) for pressing clothes. Our sink remained clogged for a whole day, it required two reminders. On our last night, a toad came into our room. The staff was quite helpful but it’s hard maintain such property.

Wild ginger hotel is rustic, but the building is charming and nestled into lush greens which gives it a great ambiance. They are doing a lot of renovations which I think will help. The place certainly has a lot of potential.
The staff (other than the amazing contractor Cody) were rude and unhelpful. I am from the islands and can honestly say this was truly not the aloha spirit. I get that being short staffed is hard, but this went well above having a bad day. If not for the staff, I would have rated this much higher. Friendly service and a great breakfast would have totally lifted this experience.

The lobby area was quirky and had a hostel vibe. The vegetation around the property gave a little bit of privacy and almost hid the fact that we were in downtown Hilo. Management decorated the common space.
Lots of health and safety concerns around the property, I'm not really sure how this place is still open. It used to be a hostel, but it was eerily empty during our stay.
It seemed like anyone could gain access to the property during business hours, and there was rarely someone present at the front desk. Downtown Hilo is in disrepair and there are many homeless people in the area.
The door knob on our room was a cheap Defiant lock and the locking mechanism was jammed. The door frame had damage around the strike plate from previous guests slamming on the door to get it to open. There was obvious water damage in the closet, mold on the ceiling in the bathroom, and stains on the mattress. We also heard road noise throughout the night because our room was at the end of the property that backs up to the Hawaii Belt Highway.

Old Hawaii feel, tin roofs, breadfruit tree and ginger in the garden. Things are apparently being upgraded on an ongoing basis.
Strange art, photography from a male perspective, on all the walls. Felt unwelcoming to me.

Nothing
Cat feces in the lobby, floors leading to the rooms was unsafe and rooms were not cleaned, no soap or any accomodations and no breakfast, false advertisement. It was not worth the price

The best thing about this hotel was the bagel and sliced fruit which could have been bought at any gas station. I did enjoy all the tiki carvings. The coqui frogs helped me to fall asleep. I could hear waves crashing from the hotel.
After my booking I received an email, this was the first thing that was written.
"The Wild Ginger Hotel is an old, Hawaiian-style Hotel and not a luxury resort. The building is full of history, character and aloha. It is truly a unique Hawaiian experience, and we are excited to share it with you."
I'm going to break this down for you.
Old Hawaiian-style Hotel - this means dilapidated single wall construction with warped floor boards, slanted hallways, no outlet covers, and rusty tin roof that probably leaks (I wouldn't know as they jammed me in the basement room under the stairs).
The building is full of history, character and aloha - this means you'll get to find remnants of previous guests in your room in the form of about 15 different hairs on the floor. Don't worry if you're traveling by yourself, you won't be alone. You'll be graced by the presence of spiders in the shower, around the windows as well as fruit flies all over the bathroom and towels.
A note is provided in the room on how to activate the hot water, you're supposed to leave the sink and shower faucet on simultaneously and wait.....I waited and waited over 20 minutes. The hot water never came, it wasn't even warm.
It is truly a unique Hawaiian experience - this means getting to experience how the poorest of the poor live in Hawaii, in brokedown bug infested crackshacks with no hot water.
My advice spent $10 extra and stay anywhere else. I paid $137 after taxes an fees which was supposedly a heavily discounted price - Not Worth It! I've spent a 10th of that in Third World Countries that were cleaner and less rundown. You'd be better off sleeping in a park and showering at the beach, there'd still be bugs and a cold shower but at least you'd have saved your money.
STEER CLEAR! I brought up my concerns and complainants to management, they told me they'd look into it.

Great room but lack of power points..good budget accommodation and centrally location. A communal TV would be good.
No communal TV or TV in rooms .No cooking facilities apart from a communal microwave.

The girl on the desk was lovely. Very helpful, nothing to much trouble. Have us lots of information too.
We had no change of towels until the last day and the room wasn't cleaned.

This place was cool, a bit funky and I loved it. Definitely not your standard hotel but it felt so authentically Hawaii. By far the most memorable hotel of our two week long trip across Hawaii.
I would have like to have beach towels available but we made do just fine.

I'm a little perplexed at the many 10 out of 10 ratings for this property. The only plus was the staff were friendly, the sheets and towels were clean, and when we decided we couldn't stay the four nights, they refunded us the unused nights. Breakfast was included and consisted of three platters of fresh fruit and bagels.
The hotel was older and in much worse condition than I would have thought possible for a hotel charging guests. The building is very run-down, with rotting floorboards in the open-air corridor, rotting window frames, and a slanting floor. I found it hard to believe that this building was safe, especially when we walked past a room where the doors and window frames had subsided to form odd angles. One side of the building outside had the timber boards missing and you could see the insulation.
We were advised by the taxi driver to not walk in the area at night.
The air conditioning was open windows and a fan, which meant I was kept awake from traffic noise and frogs, not to mention the bed was uncomfortable. The overnight rain meant everything in the room was damp. There was no hair dryer, no TV and the wifi didn't reach our room. It was not what we expected (especially from the photos and the glowing reviews). We only stayed one night.

The location was ok and the bed was comfortable. The Hawaiian breakfast was passable.
Shower system no hot water. You had to run the water for a long time to try to get hot water if you were lucky. Toilet systern broken and leaking. No television

Quirky property, nice garden (& lizards), friendly staff, comfy bed, good breakfast and coffee, very near the town centre.
window/vent leading onto lit outside walkway didn’t have a blind, so room never got that dark

The free breakfast was nice; fruit and bagels, tea and coffee.
The hotel itself is very old --good for the budget conscious but the rooms are stark. Cracks in walls, a very slanted floor. If you look over the balcony from outside room 18 you can see one wing of the hotel has sunken into the earth. Staff are lovely, the shower has lots of hot water, and the wifi is good. But just prepare yourself as the rooms are a bit on the gloomy side.

The breakfast was continental. Muffins and fruit mostly. Would have liked some protein options.
Did not like the appearance of hotel from outside. When we drove in I was afraid of what I had booked. The outside could be tidied up and more welcoming. The big military truck makes one think of Cuba. Trimming all the dead vegetation would go a long way in making a nice atmosphere.

All! Even though it's a simple, local and antique hotel, our stay was great! Staring by Lee at front desk that was so kind and amazing to us. If you're expecting for a super fancy and impersonal hotel, this is not for you. The stay was great because it was simple, connected to the nature and cultural. You sleep and wake up with the sound of the animals outside and it was so beautiful. Breakfast is very nice and the area you get to eat is rich of details and, of course, more nature. Price was great for the offerings. If you are a nature and local culture appreciator, that place is for you.
We liked everything because we were expecting a local hotel with more nature energy and we got it!
