Makathanee was a great place to stay at Koh Mak. We came directly to the pier from Koh Chang, got into the spacious bungalow quickly and enjoyed our time here with an amazing view to the ocean. Close by shops, restaurants and massages (walking distance only minutes). Hotel booked a snorkeling trip for us with only 6 guests which was great. Also nice private beach, also to go for longer walks in both directions. However, a scooter rental is helpful to see also other areas of the island.
Nothing the resort is responsible for, but be aware of the sandflies and itchy bites - but the local pharmacy across the street provides balm and creams against it.

staff very friendly and helpful

The pickup service with an electric golf buggy at the pier!
The location: seafront with a nice garden
The bungalow: spacious and well arranged
The staff's friendliness and professionalism
The restaurants and shops nearby
The vast amounts of rubbish on the beach: we couldn't help but spend 30mns pickup garbage when we arrived at the resort. Such a shame for such a nice beach... And you could say that it is not the hotel's fault (most of this rubbish probably comes from the sea) but there is not one bin near the beach at the property! You get those "garbage hero" baskets everywhere on the island but here :-( Main improvement point in our opinion. I must also mention that I spent time observing the 2 guys in charge of the garden and the beach cleaning but my feeling is that they just pretend and don't much done. Conclusion: we never went to this beach (20 meters from our doorstep).
Second topic: the swimming pool always had some kind of foam at the surface and the water did not look very clean. We still use it (35 degrees + during our stay) but maybe that was not a good idea.

The roof bar was great
There was quite a lot of rubbish on the beach at some times of the day
2.0
Good location close to a few cafes and restaurants.
Common outdoor areas are totally unusable; super uncomfortable sun beds which no one uses, run down pool area. Shower in my room had no pressure and water smelled and tasted like metal.

Need to be upgraded
Not maintained at all.

nice location, staff is very help-full and polite. rooftop bar is good!
with some building refurbishment and good coffee you can get a 7+ or 8
hotel rooms are too old, complex need complete renovation.

Stayed for 2 weeks working remotely. Located in center of town. Very convenient near restaurants and local shops. Staff are very helpful. Great massage on beachfront. Good breakfast. Nice garden lawn in front of beach to relax. Great place to watch sunset at the bar. Very spacious room with decent table to work.
Water pressure is terrible. Not enough lighting. The entire resort is rather dated. Towels are old. Beach loungers are old and tattered.
4.5
Very comfortable room in the main block with a good view out over the pool and sea from both the inside sitting area and the balcony. Very nice gardens attracting a variety of birds. Excellent, warm & clean swimming pool. Very friendly and helpful reception staff. Good position for a number of nearby restaurants and small village shops
If you want to bathe in the sea, the beach in front of the hotel isn’t idea as there is a relatively thin patch of sand before you get to rocks on which there are warnings for sea urchins. However, the swimming pool is excellent compensation.
3.5
Brilliant location and friendly staff
Facilities are a bit dated
Bed linen was very old and tatty
Poor cleanliness in rooms

Breakfast was ok.
Pool area is small and doesn’t have sunbeds. Sunbeds are available near the beach on grass, but they were old and broken. There’s no such a good beach as photos may seem. There is big grass-area near the sea. Walls in hotel rooms are like paper, we could hear everything from the next door, even the toilet.

We loved the location and the pool, and the views from the restaurant, the beach & the room.
Head in the Clouds rooftop bar was a lovely place to relax in the evenings.
Also, Saifah & Wow at the reception desk were amazing! So helpful, friendly and courteous.
Wish there were more vegan options at breakfast and better water pressure in the shower.
I had to clean the air conditioner filters and behind the TV and the higher up shelves and under the desk and the shower area as these were not clean upon arrival unfortunately.
4.5
location and easy beach access ( with snorkelling opportunities )
breakfast could be a little better - more varied

right on the beach, close to main town
no scooters available, reception wasn’t helpful or very friendly, basic breakfast, extremely dated rooms- ours had a huge patch of mould on the ceiling.

Perfect location, right on the beach, close to bars and restuarants. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and had a great view of the ocean.
We were picked up and dropped off at the ferry with ease aswell as rent a motorbike from them.
Only little things like no pool towels or tea in the room.
The room and hotel could do with 'freshing' up abit but we didnt mind as the room was clean and they looked after the pool and garden area very well.
There are sandflies on the beach but this is a problem everywhere and they do have signs on the beach saying so.

loved the pool and beach
great rooms and loved the balcony views
a really beautiful resort with amazing views
liked that we got collected by the golf cart
Wi-Fi a bit average

Outstanding location on the island. The buildings are a little run down but overall really good value for money. The staff are super helpful.

Nice location, friendly staff, clean. Breakfast was ok - many choises - I'm vegan so was possible to get vegan fried rice.
No hammock. Would be very nice if resort staff inform guests about sandflies - we got many bites in first day because we didn't know about them - coconut oil is for sale in the reception but nobody inform why. We went also on Koh Mak island few years ago and that time there weren't any sandflies.

We booked for what turned out to be a huge rain storm. Our room was 5 feet from the water with huge windows. It was the best possible place to sit out a rain storm that affected all of Thailand. We sat comfortably and watched nature.
It rained.

The room was clean, cool and pleasant. The swimming pool was immaculate and the gardens very well kept.
The beach was littered with garbage, breakfast was not very good. Especially the coffee was terrible, despite the fact that they used the same coffee machine as we had in a previous hotel, where the coffee was excellent. I guess that they used cheaper coffee beans and the milk appeared diluted.

location
a bit old and un-organized, they gave out of order room to us but then changed it later, and staff are not helpful, i wanted to order food but need to called 6 times and still no one come, even to went to talk to them at the counter, no service minded at all, disappointed.
