About this cabin rental
Welcome to our lake home on Island Lake in Barnes, Wisconsin. Island Lake is approximately 60 acres and roughly 50 feet deep. The lake is large enough for skiing and tubing, but small enough that it doesn't have heavy boat traffic. A very gentle walk to the lake leads to a zero entry beach with sugar sand and crystal clear water.
The cabin is very clean and cozy with all the amenities of home. It has 3 levels with a queen bed, single bed, and half-bath upstairs, a main floor queen bed and full bathroom, and a downstairs room with two twin beds, a sleeper sofa and a third full bathroom. There is an additional single bed that serves as a relaxing area on the main floor and space for an air mattress. While the cabin sleeps 8 comfortably, there is certainly room for more, especially if there are kids and/or guests don’t mind staying in tighter quarters.
The cabin includes a fully stocked kitchen, linens, bath towels and ceiling fans. Air conditioning was added in June of 2021. Our guests are set up with initial start up paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels & kleenex. Guests are asked to provide their own beach towels, additional paper products and disposable dining products (paper plates, cups, napkins, etc).
A lakeside deck with a table and chairs awaits you for coffee, cocktails or a card game. There is a bon fire pit near the lake as well as an adjacent deck right near the water, a paddle boat, canoe, and three kayaks ready for your use, and wildlife galore. Recreational boating activities are permitted between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. so that everyone is able to enjoy the lake.
Whether you stay at the cabin or venture out, you'll find so many activities to enjoy! It's the perfect distance from Hayward, WI -- just 25 miles for necessities, dining and entertainment, but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of a cabin nestled in the peaceful Northern Wisconsin woods. Great ATV, snowmobile and cross country ski trails are accessible from the home.

We enjoyed many campfires by the lake. Wonderful seating areas by the fire pit and beach . It was so nice to have a good selection of family board games and yard games. Such a peaceful location! The kids loved using the kayaks that were supplied! Beautiful clear water and sandy beach area were great for swimming and jumping off dock. Would definitely come back for another relaxing get away! This cabin fit our two families comfortably and had everything we needed!

Mike and Jenny have an amazing property in a great, quiet location. Mike answered my million questions before our trip with no hesitation and communication before and during our stay was answered quickly. We spent 3 nights at their cabin with our 3 pre-teen and teen boys and found the cabin to be a great size for us all to space out when needed. The paddle boat and kayaks were a huge hit with our kids, as was the fire pit located right next to the lake. For the most part, the cabin came with everything we thought we would need. A few things I would suggest, but didn't make our stay any less enjoyable, would be tongs and a can opener for the kitchen. We searched for both and couldn't find either. We made do with what we could find though and it all worked out great! Mike and Jenny have amazing neighbors on both sides, both whom have dogs that were very nice! The Welhavens(they are the neighbors to the right if you are looking at the lake from the cabin) have three dogs (Tucker, Remy and Sassy) and Tucker would come visit us whenever we were outside. Our 12 year old, who is an animal lover, absolutely enjoyed him! Reid Welhaven came over and introduced himself and and let us know about the dogs shortly after we arrived, and gave us some great ideas of things to do in the area and places to check out, which came in handy! We are already considering booking Mike and Jennys cabin for next summer!

This was our families second time at the cabin. It was the perfect location for our families to get away to the had all of the amenities that we needed. Great fishing, perfect beach front for our little ones to go swimming, great dock, great outdoor space! I’m really thankful for the owners of this perfect little getaway. It really did have everything we needed. Would definitely recommend and we would love to come back.

Four of us spent a long weekend here for my moms 69th birthday. It was a perfect spot to relax, do a little fishing, and it was a great starting point for adventures to Pattison State Park, Amnicon Falls State Park, and Superior. The owners responded quickly when I had a question before our arrival and the neighbors were friendly and gave great suggestions for things to do or places to eat when we ventured out. We are dog lovers and enjoyed the visits from the neighbors dogs but the neighbors did emphasize that if we were bothered by the dogs to let them know so they could keep them from visiting. As all of my group has dogs it made the experience more homey and enjoyable for us.

The perfect location to explore Bicheno. Loved the outlook over Waub’s Bay Beach and we spent lots of time enjoying drinks and nibbles at the private picnic bench. Really comfortable beds and loads of towels which was really appreciated. The open fireplace was gorgeous. A solid well loved cottage with everything you need. The driveway looks spectacular but the foliage does scrape against the car as you drive in- otherwise an easy and perfect stay.

Serene lake and beautiful night sky!
We had a great time at the Island Lake home. The lake is so serene and the outdoor deck and firepit were perfect for the cool fall evenings. The neighbors were super friendly and helpful! The large kitchen, 3 bedrooms and extra futon, as well as 3 bathrooms, provided plenty of room. There are stairs inside the home and a few outside that may pose a safety issue for those with mobility issues.
Would definitely stay here again.

Exactly what we were looking for
The moment we saw pictures of the property, our gut feeling was this was the place we were looking for. After a week-long stay, our thoughts were confirmed: we’re definitely booking again for next year.
Nestled down from the main road and at near water level. Mike and Jenny’s place is one of, and maybe the only, houses on Island Lake that you don’t have to walk down a hill to get to the water. For us, that was a big deal.
Once at the water’s edge, there’s a good sized sandy beach, a wooden patio with comfy seating, and a fire pit with plenty of space for seats. We spent almost everyday down there, and even ate dinner there a few nights.
Having three kids, ages ranging from two to nine, it was important to have a swimming area with a gradual walk-in to the water. I’m 5-9 and I could walk out to the edge of the dock, and the water would be up to my chin. Perfect. That water was plenty deep for all of us to jump off without the fear of the water being too deep. We could see all the way to bottom, which was soft and sandy.
We brought some of our own toys but Mike and Jenny provided many of their own. We used a lot of them, too. The kids loved the paddle boat. I took out the kayak everyday. The fishing rods, backyard games, the life jackets, we used it all.
The house has its quirks and we loved it. Yes, there was a little mold around the tub, and yes, the tub’s drain plug doesn’t seal. But those are minor and easily fixable. The kitchen is large with lots of counter space for meal prepping, plopping things down on, etc. And it’s stocked with everything you need to cook or bake. Except for a blender…but Mike is already on it. There were lots of blankets, pillows, and plenty of space to get comfortable and relax.
When we arrived we were greeted by two of the nicest and best dogs ever—Renny and Sassy. The kids fell in love with them immediately. They’re the neighbor’s dogs, Lisa and Reid. I love my neighbors where I live, and I wish I could be their neighbors because they’re the nicest and most welcoming people. I look forward to seeing them again. Lisa and Reid, too. 😉
I ever spoke with or communicated with Jenny. Mike was my point of contact and he was excellent. He communicated at the right times, was easy to get a hold of, quick to respond. My mom was hospitalized when we were on this trip, and Mike even reached out afterwards to ask how she/we were doing. It was very thoughtful and much appreciated. He’s good people.

Excellent Up North Family Vaca
We had a wonderful trip up North! The lake house was as described: clean, lots of games and puzzles, stocked kitchen utensils w/ all necessary tools/gadgets, working AC which was appreciated on the hotter afternoons, and cozy sleeping arrangements. The star of the vacation was the access to a private dock on a spectacular lake! We all had a blast swimming, paddle boating, playing in the sand and sitting out enjoying the view. My only recommendation would be to have the tub deep cleaned or replaced. I have one son who has severe allergies and medical issues and I was hesitant to have him use the shower because the tub was surrounded by mold. We are normally not too particular but with him, I need to be. Other than that, it was great! We had a hard time leaving the lake home!

Perfect family getaway
Perfect little lake house with just about everything you could ever need. The kids loved swimming in clear lake, boys had a great time fishing, and we all loved kayaking. Thanks to neighbors my 18 yr old was able to paddle board for the first time and loved it. Great vacation!!! We even made a bonus trip to Lake Superior.

Fun and relaxing for all ages
My family stayed here for a few days in early June. We had all ages starting with an infant at 8 months old all the way til grandparents in their 60's. Everyone loved the cabin and lake. The lake was just as beautiful as described and peaceful. The area is very friendly. People walking along the road would always wave to us. The neighbors checked in with us as well and offered all sorts of help. The property manager also reached out and made sure we were all set and said to call or text anytime. The cabin was completely clean and had plenty of room for everyone and more if we wanted. There were kayaks that we took on the lake, they had life jackets for our use and fishing supplies and much more. They provided so many things for us to do and keep everyone entertained. Such an amazing property and great people. We highly recommend this cabin for an amazing and relaxing vacation!! Loved every minute of it!

Perfect Twin Cities Relaxing Weekend Getaway Spot
Jen & Mike's little cabin in the woods was the perfect early summer getaway for us! We wanted something drivable from the Twin Cities, on a lake, that could handle two families of three, and this place delivered! Mike checked in with us via text on the first night to make sure that everything was going well and that we found the place okay, which was appreciated. The next door neighbors are also very friendly and stopped by to say hi and see if we needed anything.
The directions provided via VRBO were spot on, and we had no problems locating the cabin. The location itself is fantastic, and we really enjoyed time spent on the little deck and campfire area down by the lakeshore. There was plenty of firewood provided for campfires and we loved listening to the sound of the loons as the sun set over the lake. The shed is filled with all sorts of lawn games, life jackets, campfire roasting forks, etc. and we enjoyed taking the kayaks out for a loop on the lake each afternoon. The kitchen is also well-stocked with all of the pots, pans, cookie sheets, etc. that you might need for making a quick meal, and we appreciated having access to the beverage fridge right by the back door so we could grab things quickly while outside. If you’re looking for a good breakfast, we recommend the Trading Post, which is a 15 minute drive away.
FYI – One thing to be aware of is that the home is actually a split level, with the living room area raised up 2-3 steps from both the kitchen and front door. Given we had two children under one, we used this as an opportunity to teach them how to safely go down the stairs, but worth noting for others with littles or people with mobility issues.

Didn’t want to leave!
This was a girl’s getaway for 2 retired gals who wanted a safe option to get out of the house and enjoy some time together in a relaxing environment. We took a short drive up to Amnicon Falls state park and Superior one day which was lovely- did a bit of hiking, saw the lighthouse, found great takeout lunch. Spent a lot of time at the cabin sipping wine while watching the resident loons on the lake, had nightly campfires (firewood supply was well-stocked) and thoroughly enjoyed kayaking the calm lake. We had everything we needed there and Mike checked on us several times. The neighbors were very friendly too and it couldn’t have been a better experience. We only wished we had rented it for a bit longer!

Lovely getaway
We had a mini getaway at this cabin for 3 nights. The water was perfect and the dock was great for jumping off of and easy fishing. We also took the kayaks and paddle boat out which was a great perk! We had great communication with the owners and everything was comfortable and clean.
