About this cottage rental
Adirondack Cottage is quaint at its finest. This 2 bedroom/1 bathroom cottage is described by most as "the treehouse" and it won't take you long to find out why. Featuring soaring 20 foot ceilings and flooded with natural light, you'll reside in style while being within walking distance to everything Highlands, NC has to offer.
The Location: Adirondack Cottage is located within the Highlands, NC town limits near Harris Lake and behind Mountain Fresh Grocery. This is an area where locals come to walk/jog because it's a on a rare flat loop that is a quick 1/2 mile jaunt to Main Street, where all the shops and restaurants are located.
The Property: Upon arrival at the property, guests are greeted by a beautiful grove of Hemlock trees. There is a small parking area that allows for 2 cars and to the left, guests will climb roughly 10 stairs to enter the cottage. Aptly named Adirondack Cottage, it's here, at the top of the stairs where 2 red Adirondack chairs adorn the front porch.
The Cabin: A former artist's studio, the cottage will channel your inner creativity. From it's antique windows and cedar shake exterior to the spa-like slate shower, this cozy cabin has big character. It's privatized by the screens of old growth rhododendrons that surround the cottage from all sides, giving it the feel of being in the trees. The interior features soaring 20 foot ceilings, lots of skylights, and wood walls. Unique decor, colorful accents, and attention to detail take the charm to another level.
The Layout: From the front porch, guests enter into a big, open L-shaped space with 20 foot ceilings. The kitchen is straight ahead with a small bistro table and the living area to the right. Past the living area, there is a small hallway, complete with built in bookshelves. The bathroom with sizable shower is accessible from the hallway, with the main bedroom being at the end of the hallway. The guest bedroom access is adjacent to the common area, beside the bistro table.
The Area: Highlands, NC is the premier mountain destination in the Southeast. Lined with shopping, dining, museums and galleries, the bustling mountain village centering around Main Street is straight from a Norman Rockwell painting. Previously a summer/fall hotspot, it's quickly becoming a year-round destination. At 4,118 feet, it's one of the few temperate rain forests in North America, bringing botanists and nature lovers from all over the world.
Highlands is also a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. With an abundance of opportunities for biking, hiking, horseback riding, tubing, canoeing, fly fishing, and whitewater rafting, adventure-seekers will not find a more beautiful backdrop.
The Details: The living room and master bedroom both have flat screen smart TV's and standard cable channels. We also have wifi. All of the bedding is memory foam- we understand everyone has their preference, but we get lots of compliments on our comfy beds. The kitchen is stocked with general kitchen essentials. This property is pet friendly with prior approval and a nominal pet fee.

The cottage is very comfortable and restful. Just what we needed.

We needed some R and R in a beautiful setting and that’s exactly what we found in this lovely treehouse. It was perfect!

Our first visit to Highlands, my husband, little dog and I picked the cottage for the fantastic location - walking distance to town on relatively flat roads. It did not disappoint. From the exterior the cottage looks charming and rustic, but the interiors are stunning and of superior quality!!! Gorgeous architecture, high end finishes, comfortable beds, great linens, you name it....Even better than the photos! Kristy, the property manager was responsive and helpful. We'd definitely book this place again!

Kristy’s cottage was perfect in every way and she is the consummate host! The beautiful finishes, decor and spotlessly clean cottage made for such a wonderful stay. The beds are very comfortable with lovely sheets and bedding, which makes all the difference in getting a great nights sleep when you are away from home. The kitchen is a great size if you want to stay in and do some cooking, and there’s plenty of room for several people witjput feeling crowded. I highly recommend this property and hope to return soon.

The Adirondack Cottage feels like a beautiful treehouse inside. It had everything we needed. My family of four including two middle schoolers was very comfortable there. The location was great for a stroll to downtown Highlands or to Sunset Rock.

We loved our stay in the Adirondack Cottage! The cottage is just beautiful and we had everything we needed for our time in the mountains. Loved all the windows so we could enjoy the beautiful trees and rhododendron shrubs. Beautifully renovated, convenient location, cozy and comfortable! We look forward to staying again sometime!

This small scale home has dramatic upward flourishes (a tower with glass over the living room) and lovely fresh design, which is what attracted me to it. But this is a good cover to some serious maintenance issues. The heat is forced air and the dehumidifier (masking what?) which must be left on (but makes noise) creates a drying atmosphere which can attack even healthy sinuses. The hot water was sporadic, one minute very hot, next minute ice cold. We were grateful that the owner sent a plumber when we complained of our cold showers, but on New Year's Eve, with parts on order, there was no easy fix. Owners gave us half off after suggesting we find another venue, but for 70 year olds who had unpacked and a busy week in Highlands, that just didn't seem viable. So, we toughed it out. We "managed" our showers, one minute, soap up, another minute to rinse. If I had just been hiking, fine, but we had plans for our wedding anniversary and New Years and restaurant reservations every night. Hot water needs to be addressed at this venue and perhaps a different shower control. We brought our own duvets so the bedroom was the place to be cozy, because with all the "upward flourishes" the heat is uneven in the living area. Plus side this cabin is well decorated and cozy with a fine kitchen. Downside, maintenance is not hands on with the basic requirements of a home (hot water and heat) not given the attention needed.

Our second time staying in the Adirondack Cottage was such a treat. It is truly such a comfortable and serene home base for exploring the area. We walked to Main Street daily and even walked to sunset rock. The location is ideal but what really set this place apart are the comfort inside the cabin. From the inside the shower heater to the cozy fur blankets, every detail is taken care of for optimal comfort and relaxation. We cannot wait for our next visit.

This is our second time staying at Adirondack Cottage and we'll be back again! The cottage is unique, architecturally interesting, containing wonderful accommodations and surprisingly complete with many thoughtful comforts. Great location a few blocks from downtown and easily walkable. Cudos to Kristy and thank you again for providing such a great place for us to enjoy and relax!

Throughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful treehouse cabin with our two golden retrievers! They felt instantly at home and comfortable, as did we! The walk to town is so convenient and we appreciated how quiet and friendly everyone in the surrounding neighborhood was. The bedroom was very comfortable and the shower was very nice! We loved all the beautiful windows throughout the home! Will definitely stay again in the future!

We thorougly enjoyed our stay in the cottage! The space is perfect for a couple staying in the Highlands area. We especially appreciated the fact that we could walk into town most days within 10-15 minutes.

Cottage is a couple of blocks/streets from Main St. in Highlands, NC...down from the local schools and in a community of homes. Private hidden, off-street gravel parking, for vehicle security, plenty of space for two. Short turn staircase up to the living area. Window surrounds for the entry living area, and around the kitchen sides/back counters...all one large room. One bedroom directly off this area and the other larger back bedroom is down the bookshelved hallway, which also leads to the bathroom(not ensuite, which is helpful for two bedroom usage of guests). Larger bedroom has higher ceiling w/ some upper windows for good light..but EARLY light. ;) There is a glass framed door out to a small deck(bench) area, which can be convenient if you do have a pet that is agile enough to make use of this exit without wandering off into the steep hill/shrubs. Our Golden Retriever was good with at least making use of it to relieve herself in the morning light. Otherwise it's best to walk your dog for relief, down the road(and do pick up their mess!). We basically used the kitchen for our breakfast meal and coffee. Easily could use for other meals if that's your choice to cook during your stay. Decent supply of basic kitchenware(and I'm a cook/baker). The bathroom has of course, the basics of a sink and toilet, but the cottage makes use of this room's bluestone tile flooring, to carve out a deep, doorless shower. Nice addition is the "heater" that adds warmth while showering...which we needed, as our visit the temps had dropped that week into the 50's. Our only "hiccup" was that the cottage's HVAC system had developed it's own "cold". Having lived/owned homes long enough, we suspected the problem...and Kristy(owner) was fast in action trying to get it fixed by service people. Unfortunately, their diagnosis wasn't cured while we were there, BUT, as I wrote, WE knew how to drain the issue manually to kick out heat when the system built up to no heat, and its solid running of the fan blowing(cold). The fix is scheduled...so that's the only issue we had with the Adirondack Cottage and would gladly make use of it again. BTW, there were only the two of us renting the cottage. Again, best close to town small cottage rental for comfortable enjoyment.

What an wonderful cabin! The attention to detail is remarkable. Perfectly appointed accommodations, and a very quick walk to everything the Highlands has to offer. Will absolutely stay again!

The Adirondack cottage was wonderful. It reminded me of a quaint cottage tucked in the hills of Europe. The aesthetic is artfully curated but not pretentious. It’s comfortable and classy at the same time. It had everything one would need to cook meals. The stunning treehouse like view from the kitchen makes you want to utilize the space by cooking!!! If you’re not the cooking kind, it’s a short stroll into town to eat at any of the restaurants. We will definitely be back!!

My boyfriend, our small dog and I stayed here for a week away. It was truly a perfect escape. We loved all the natural light that poured in through the windows. The proximity to town was a huge plus too, we walked into town every single day. We also walked to sunset rock for an evening hike. We have stayed at a few different spots in highlands over the years but nothing is as central or convenient as this cottage. We both worked remotely a few days while we were there. The Wifi was very strong and we had no issues logging onto zoom meetings. The kitchen is well stocked and a beautiful place to cook a meal. We are already dreaming of going back to this relaxing and special place.

Coziest cottage tucked into the hills just off Main Street made for a lovely escape from city life! From the natural light pouring in windows, copious amounts of books to read, and the cacophony of nature ringing with windows propped open it was a much needed unplug from the fast pace life we can become accustomed. You won’t regret booking this hideaway in the hills
Kristy is very responsive to top it off. Will book again!!

We called the Adirondack cottage “ the tree house” as it nestled up in the rhododendrons and hemlocks and had that cozy feel. The architecture on this gem is so lovingly designed so artistically built. The ceilings rise from 7’ to 25’. At only 650 sq ft ( I believe) it seems much larger. Windows windows The beds were comfortable, the kitchen very complete ( though we never cooked). The tree house location is perfect. For walking beyond the 1 mile flat loop on the neighborhood one can access the Nature Trail or Sunrise /Sunset rock trail for more. Those accesses are only .5 mile away. Then of course there is Mountain Fresh and Highlands shops/ restaurants again .5 mile. We enjoyed a very relaxing week

Our family stayed in this charming cottage for a quick weekend trip following pick up from summer camp in Black Mountain. The cottage is wonderfully appointed and charming both inside and out. It’s nestled in the trees with a small porch and Adirondack chairs perfect for reading. The property manger was very responsive and highly accommodating. Upon check in, we were provided a wonderful guide via email with great recommendations on where to eat, play, hike, swim and shop. The recommendations allowed us to see some great hikes and water falls…. Watering holes, too. We are great full for the opportunity to visit this precious home. We love Highlands and will continue to visit.

This cottage was the perfect home base for a week of exploring the surrounding area, waterfalls, rivers and National Forests. It was such a convenient location and being close to town was easy for restaurants and shopping. Such a cozy place, we loved how it is tucked into the side of the mountain and guarded by the lush vegetation, it has a bit of a tree house feel. We loved the high ceilings and the kitchen was so cool with the wrap around windows and everything we needed to cook. Our mornings and evenings were so comfortable and we played a couple of the board games hidden in the coffee table with the kids. Our host was so gracious and helpful we would not hesitate to come back.

We really enjoyed our stay in the “treetops!” The pictures do not do justice to how warm and inviting the space is. The location is perfect. We enjoyed morning walks for coffee at the Mountain Grocery and the peace of being just far enough away from Main St. We would definitely return on our next trip to Highlands!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Adirondack Cottage! It was walking distance to town, yet felt private in the trees. The furnishings and accessories felt thoughtful and curated unlike many home rentals and for this reason, the cottage felt extra cozy. We'll definitely return!

My husband and I stayed at Adirondack Cottage for a long weekend at the end of April. We wanted a quiet mountain retreat to celebrate 9 years of marriage together. We were blown away by everything about Adirondack Cottage! The architecture and beautiful design that allowed ample natural light paired with the tasteful elegance of the inside furnishings makes the place really something special. We loved waking up in the trees, sitting outside on the porch, reading on the couch, and soaking in the huge spa-like shower. The location to town was excellent too. We hope to be back one day!

Lovely time on our honeymoon here!! We loved staying in a home over a hotel. It was a very cozy place and the natural lighting was wonderful. Lent itself well to eating in and walks to town. Would come again!!

Nature Paradise
The Adirondack Cottage was conveniently located to Highlands restaurants and shops, specifically walking distance. Nature attractions, including hikes and waterfalls are very close by car. The cottage itself is optimally designed, maximizing its space. We only used the master bedroom which was very comfortable and has a door leading to a small patio with a bench isolated by trees and bushes. The bathroom has everything you need and the shower is incredible! The living area is small but comfortable with a couch and chair. The kitchen is lovely and includes every appliance and tool you need to prepare meals. The interior design is excellent, with some serious and whimsical art. Kristy is a diligent professional . She was proactive with procedures and immediately reactive to my questions. My wife and I loved this cottage and I highly recommend staying at the Adirondack Cottage if in the Highlands.
