Decided to do this trip last minute during the Thanksgiving holiday and this stay was amazing! For our family of 4 this was the most user friendly stay. If you are a hiker/walker the water falls/trails are very close and the town center for any logistical needs is as well. Highly recommend to check in during daylight to get an initial lay of the land. My eastern NC family will be looking forward to staying again. We loved it and hopefully so will you.

The Highlands area is a magical setting, and a stay at Smallwood made it even more so. Correspondence with the owners and check in was cordial and effortless. The sylvan setting is beautiful and the home was designed to capture that vista from the large windows in the main residence. Smallwood is extremely well appointed with comfortable furnishings, abundant tasteful artwork, big screen TVs, and a kitchen equipped with quality dish and glassware along with everything needed to prepare and enjoy fine meals along with a glass of wine. The screened back porch is spacious and a perfect place to curl up with a good book on the swinging daybed while daydreaming overlooking the forest. There is great attention to detail provided by the owners in every respect and it shows pride of ownership in the property. The place is well maintained and absolutely spotless--the cleanest of any rental home where I've ever stayed. We utilized the garage apartment as well as the main house during our stay and found both to be very accommodating with quality toiletries and fluffy towels. The immaculate garage was also very welcome as we were there for a classic car show in Highlands. I would not hesitate to recommend Smallwood for anyone seeking a beautiful escape in a pleasant, quiet setting. It was an exceptional stay!

Realized I made an error in booking 30 seconds after I did so. Requested a refund immediately and it took 23 hours for Evolve to respond after many efforts to contact them. They refused the refund and denied date change request. Do not book...

Great house. Clean. Quite. One issue, steps to upstairs too steep and dangerous for older folks. We had to leave our suitcases downstairs. This needs to be in the notes on the house. . Thanks

Perfect mountain getaway
We loved every minute of our stay at this perfectly-situated and well-appointed home. It was near town and close to a variety of hiking trails and waterfalls. The host was attentive, flexible and very easy to reach. The screened in porch was the perfect place to relax, and the extra apartment over the cottage was perfect for our young adult children to enjoy. We can't wait to return.

Excellent!
The property owner cares and wants you to enjoy the property which is apparent by how easy everything is - not that you need her. It has everything you need. If you like the description and the pictures, you will love the stay.

Family Vacation
We really liked this property. The main house is really cute with good windows and lighting. The kitchen has everything you need for basic amenities (eg dishwasher pods, S&P, cooking oil). I really liked not having to buy tons of detergent pods for 2 loads of clothes and dishes. Beds were a great setup for our family. We had a 3 year-old in one bed and there is another small room that we used for the younger boy in a Pack-and-Play. Our daughters stayed in the room over the garage and loved it. We used the baby monitor as an intercom to communicate with them. Brought bikes for them but there wasn't a lot of room for them to ride due to elevation. TV and internet work. Host is really sweet and helpful! We had a great time and would visit again.

Smallwood provides a perfect setting
We loved our stay at Smallwood. The huge windows allowed lots of natural lighting and great views of the hummingbirds. The kitchen was wonderfully equipped with the essential tools to cook your own meals and included some extras you might not expect. My daughter and a friend stayed in the Croft. They loved having their own space and bathroom; which provided more privacy for all. We loved sitting on the screened in porch as well; especially to listen to the rain. The entire house was so clean; we felt very safe given the current COVID environment. Marie was a gracious host and provided tips on grocery stores, restaurants, and beautiful hikes. When we visit the area again, we will definitely try to stay at Smallwood.

Very nice small home + apartment above garage
Most people will love this cute house with excellent location. Porch was wonderful.
HOWEVER if you have issues with stairs this is not the house for you. The stairs in the main house are steep. The bed was great. The HVAC was excellent. Make sure you poke are around in all the cabinet s. It took us a couple days to find the extra toilet in the mud room. We move it to the bathroom. The grill had not been cleaned. The downstairs tv did not work but we did not care because the WiFi was great and we could stream what ever we wanted to watch. Marie, the owner, is wonderful

A hidden gem
Smallwood is everything as described and more. It is a warm and cozy home with items scattered throughout that represent the fun times and love that has built it to what it is today. I will definitely keep this in my favorites :-)

Perfect getaway close to everything you want to do in Highlands!
My husband and I and our 13 year old son had a fabulous stay at Smallwood. The house is precious and extremely clean and well taken care of. We enjoyed wine on the screen porch in the evening and coffee there in the morning. Quiet setting, close to town.....the location is the best!! Less than 10 minutes and a straight shot to downtown. We enjoyed dinner in town Friday evening and grilled steaks at the house with our friends visiting from Egypt on Saturday. The kitchen had everything we needed to fix our meal. It was a perfect getaway and escape from the Athens, GA heat! Thank you, Marie, for being so kind and easy to work with!

The perfect getaway
This beautiful place feels like home. Marie is a wonderful host and she makes sure the house is stocked with all you need. You will love the back porch! The bed was so comfortable I didn't want to get up. This really is the perfect place for a mountain vacation.

Smallwood was the perfect cottage in the mountains
The cottage was spotless and so comfortable. A very homey feel. Lots of artwork to enjoy and hundreds of good books to relax with. The beds were very comfortable and the croft was perfect for our grown son. The screened in back porch is a perfect, quiet area to gather. Its a very peaceful spot to enjoy. The proximity to downtown was wonderful. Also, very short drives to 5 waterfalls and hike. Marie was wonderful to talk to and get to know. She wanted to make sure we were comfortable in her home. It is well equipped and the linens are so nice. The beautiful master suite loft has huge windows and a comfortable place to read. The whole cottage has huge windows with wonderful natural light pouring in. We have already decided to go back soon. The Highlands is a gorgeous place to visit and has many galleries, boutiques and great restaurants. We love the Mountain Fresh Grocery. It is just fun! Thank you Marie for sharing your cottage with us!!

Outstanding in every way! Exceeded my greatest expectations.
This was my first time to try a VRBO. It will not be my last but I can’t imagine another property being so rewarding. From the correspondence leading up to our stay through departures, everything was over the top fantastic. Smallwood was convenient to everything on our agenda and more. It is a beautiful home nestled in the woods. The house is immaculate- so clean I don’t think I could’ve possibly left it cleaner than I found it which is always my intention. They provide everything you could possibly need or want from coffee, coffee pot, microwave, iron , washing machine, etc. The home is more than comfortable and well appointed. My favorite spot was a screen porch equipped with rockers that provided great enjoyment. I cannot say enough great things about this home! And in fact I felt like I was at home while there!!! If you are considering this VRBO you will not regret it!

Hospitality!
We had a great stay in this lovely home! It is obviously loved and cared for! We spent some very relaxing time reading on the porch. We used the Croft when our son joined us. It was just as comfortable as the main house with a great bathroom. Marie was a gracious host before and after our stay, I hope to plan another trip to this wonderful home soon!

Perfection! What a wonderful place to relax and enjoy time with loved ones.
Smallwood is a lovey home in a beautiful setting in the trees. Situated 2 miles from downtown Highlands and eight minutes by car, this Home is convient to everything Highlands has to offer. Just at the bottom of the neighborhood, is a restaurant, “On the Veranda” which is walkable from the home, if you don’t mind a climb up a short hill after dinner. Marie, the owner of Smallwood is charming and lovely and she is very communicative but not overly so. She makes you feel at home with everything you need in a vacation property. You can tell she loves this home and area.
The guest house is wonderful and is above a detached garage. It feels like an oasis when needed. The main house is lovely as well with nice amenities and comfortable surroundings. The mattresses are nice and the bedding is comfortable.
In all this home is wonderful for families, and time away from it all. We will return as this Home truly is a wonderful getaway!

A beautifully maintained home that is clearly furnished with much love and memories. Everything was perfect! My best vacation rental ever.

Perfect place to stay for a long weekend while visiting the Highlands for a destination wedding!
The house, as well as Smallcroft, were both impeccably clean and well appointed when we arrived. The beds were comfortable and the house was cozy. The screened porch was a great place to enjoy a glass of wine in the evening.
We enjoyed our stay and felt we were close to everything we needed. Awesome restaurants and Main Street were just minutes away! Paoletti's was, by far, our favorite place for dinner. Make reservations a couple of weeks ahead of time to make sure you don't miss out.
The one thing that sets this "rental" apart from any other is the communication from the home's owner, Marie. Your comfort is her main concern and after speaking with her, you feel more like a family friend going to stay, enjoying the warmth and personal touches of her home, rather than feeling like a "renter." We have already booked another long-weekend stay in October! We're coming back Marie!!! Maybe warm chocolate chip cookies on the counter this time? Tee hee!

Peace, quiet, cool July temperatures and a great screened in porch
Perfect for a couples getaway. The owner did a world class job of taking care of us. A 5 star restaurant right down the hill. We had a wonderful 4 night stay.

Great little house in the Highlands and I would recommend it.
I love all the light and the view in the morning from the master bedroom window. As others have mentioned it's a loft style bed overlooking the living room. This can be a pro or con. If someone is watching tv below you can hear every word and can't get any sleep or privacy. The open concept is modern and appealing to the eye. The master shower is tiny and has no water pressure at all. I'm sure this is due to being in the mountains. The living room could really use another cozy chair or loveseat. There is an uncomfortable squeaky couch but it's at a weird angle for watching tv. Marie has a wonderful library and is quite generous with lending her books. The internet is terrible due to the mountains. The home is very private, beautifully decorated and close to the main area for food or shopping. The "croft" that comes with the rental is a nicely decorated cute little extra that would come in handy for more guests. The screened in porch is a bonus that is much appreciated for us people that hate mosquitos. There is a lot of seating on the porch and a table for eating or playing games. Marie is one of the most attentive professional hosts that I have ever worked with. I've rented homes for 15 years all over the world and she is the best. I would love to go back to the Highlands and Marie's home.

Adorable, well-appointed, cozy house in the forest. Must stay!!!!
From booking, I knew we had made the right choice. Marie was an incredibly gracious and welcoming host. The house was immaculate and perfectly appointed, with firewood ready for our evening fire around the fireplace. Beautiful surroundings, amazing location, just pure bliss. I highly recommend this beautiful home for a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of life. Thank you for a wonderful stay, Marie!

Wonderful Thanksgiving!!
Our family loved our time in Smallwood! My parents had their own special space in the croft, and my husband and two children were more than comfortable in the main house. The owner was easy to communicate with, and went above and beyond to make our stay special. We had a perfect vacation together!!!

A lovely fall weekend in Highlands!
My boyfriend and I enjoyed a lovely fall weekend at Marie's place. We found her communication to be friendly and timely, and she was quite hospitable and made us feel welcome!
There was plenty of room for a couple upstairs. We found everything we needed in the kitchen for cooking and enjoyed the access to the grill too. The firewood was waiting for us and we put it to good use! We didn't use the CROFT but took a peek. It's cute!
The location is great and super close to everything we wanted to see. We loved dinner at Madison's, coffee at Bucks, brunch at Ugly Dog Pub, and hiking to see Glenn Falls and the Chattooga River.
Our only critical feedback would be that pillows weren't great to sleep on.
We hope to return to see even more!

We loved our stay here! Very clean, felt right at home! We loved the fireplace and screened in porch as well! Very close to town for shopping and restaurants. Also, close to some of the best waterfalls in the area!
