The apartment was great, the location is wonderful for bird watchers (lots of sea birds and bald eagles). The location is a 10-15 minute drive to most anywhere in Juneau. It is nice and quiet at this VRBO. The hosts were helpful in sharing their considerable knowledge of the area.

Every time we returned from town to on the wildlife refuge was like starting another vacation. So peaceful and beautiful. Our every need was met in this rental and the host went beyond expectations by providing starter groceries. We went to all parts of Juneau and can confirm that this location is very special- even the weather was better!

Mark and Betty were very communicative, reaching out before my arrival with check in instructions. The rental was clean and well equipped and the view was second to none. Will definitely be renting again when I return to Juneau.

There were so many wonderful things about this property: very large bathroom, 2 closets, kitchen with everything you need, comfortable bed, very clean, quiet, outdoor space and the list goes on. However, the ever changing view was something we never tired of. We hope to stay again next time we are in Juneau.
Thank you Betty and Mark

This place is such a gem! It’s in a quiet spot w/ a beautiful view! We went during off season which was great since there weren’t many tourists from the cruise ships flooding the streets.
Betty and Mark were great hosts. They engaged as much as we wanted and talking to them felt as if we were old friends. The fridge and cupboard was stocked w/ a few goodies for us, it was such a sweet gesture.
I’d book it again if I’m ever back in the area. Just go for it and book it!

Beautiful property located on on the Gastineau Channel with views of Mendenhall Glacier, jumping salmon, bubbling humpback, and Bald Eagles. Betty and her husband have lived on Douglas Island for over 30 years, they provided a wealth of knowledge about the area that made the trip very authentic..we lived like natives for 8 days. I highly recommend this place, trip of a lifetime!

Gorgeous property with all the amenities. The best view of the wetlands. We loved watching the tide come in and out.

Could not have had a more perfect and beautiful place to experience Alaska! To be nestled in a nature preserve, away from the craziness of the cruise ships was wonderful! Our hosts were gracious and informative and really helped us see Juneau without being obtrusive. You need to stay here!!

Mark and Betty are very easy to work. The place is well stocked. Very comfortable. Views off deck are amazing. Great to get away from all the cruisers and enjoy nature. At first was concerned about airport just across the channel but it was not loud and it was fun to watch all the planes go in and out. Saw up to 11 bald eagles in the channel. Really enjoyed the area. Would definitely recommend this rental to other couples visiting the Juneau area.

Betty and Mark's property is wonderful....perfect for a couple. It's very comfortable, has a large bathroom with his/her sinks, good kitchen with a full size fridge. We cooked several meals during our stay. Communication was great and Betty let us know when the property was ready which enabled us to check in a couple of hours early. They had lots of great information on hand about the area and things to do. Their location on the channel afforded us wonderful wildlife watching, especially bald and golden eagles. They're located on the north end of Douglas island, about 15 minutes or so from downtown Juneau, so you definitely need a car which was not a problem for us as we rented one to fully explore the area. Would definitely stay here again on a return trip to Juneau. Thanks for a great stay!

Beautiful view
We couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else in the Juneau area. It has a spectacular view of the mountains and glacier alongside the channel. The hospitality was superb and Patty, Mark and Dray made us feel like friends without being overbearing. We will definitely recommend this place to family and friends looking to visit Alaska.

Amazing View!
We enjoyed our stay at the Douglas Island property immensely. The owners were extreemly helpful and gracious and went out of their way to answer our questions. Betty makes a most excellent crab dip! The view is amazing. Want to see eagles? This is the place! The property is conveniently located to all the surrounding sites, and nicely tucked away from the bustle of Juneau. We highly recommend this property!

I have been traveling to Juneau several times a year for the past few years. This is by far the best place I have ever stayed in Juneau. The accommodations are very comfortable with all the amenities you my want or need and a world class view. Both Betty and Mark are warm and welcoming.

Beautiful place in a beautiful setting!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on the wildlife refuge. This is a very comfortable place in an amazing setting! Betty and Mark have made this a great place to stay! We woke up every morning to the sound of Bald Eagles and even got to see a seal in the channel off of the deck! The view of the Mendenhall Glacier was spectacular and we just couldn’t get enough of it! I am so glad we stayed here and enjoyed the peace and tranquility away from downtown. We would definitely stay here again!!

A fantastic place to spend a vacation!
If you want to stay in a place that is very comfortable and well-equipped, this is the place to stay. But if you want to stay in a place with spectacular views, you must stay in this place. Other places in town have views of parking lots. We had the breathtaking view of Mendenhall glacier! And the eagles and hummingbirds and swallows made everything just all that more incredible. Betty and Mark are wonderful hosts, and we really enjoyed their company. They were so kind to tell us places to go and things to do, as they have lived there quite a while. It is a great value for the money and we would highly recommend anyone staying there.

A gem of a find! Beautiful quiet location and studio, stunning views, and wonderful, helpful hosts!
The studio attached to a private residence, with its own entrance and expansive views from its own small deck, overlooking a wildlife preserve on the narrowed Gastineau Channel, with its four-times-per-day changing of tides, appearing as marshland at low tide and lake-like at high tide, with the gorgeous Mendenhall Glacier in the background, was a perfect refuge-home to come back to after sightseeing the Juneau area among its throngs of noisy tourists and cruise ship occupants "on shore leave". Juneau was vibrant and fun and full of activities (and stores), but after steeping ourselves in all of this for a while each day, we were delighted to drive over the bridge of the Gastineau Channel back to Douglas Island and head up the 7 miles to our lovely, serene abode and watch the birds in the preserve, Eagles nesting in large trees on our block, and assorted other wildlife in the area. Its great to walk out on the marsh/beach (our helpful hosts provide assorted sizes of boots to accomplish this), view the small fishing boats, the birds and beach critters up close, and take walks around the beautiful surrounding neighborhood. At high tide, the water turns into a lake. Our hosts, Betty and Mark, were exceptionally accommodating, wonderful to talk with, and provided advice and muffins and a few basics to tide you over if you forgot to shop at the grocery store on the way there!
The highlights of our stay, recommended by the owners:
(1) Driving to Mendenhall and taking a short hike to the beach there, where the glacier supplies a waterfall, and there are great views of the glacier itself.
(2) Taking the Mt. Roberts Tramway from downtown Juneau (where the cruise ships dock) to the top of the mountain, affording stunning landscape views of the whole Juneau area and waterways.
(3) Catching the boat in Juneau that tours the Tracy Arm Fjord, about a 7-8 hour adventure, chugging through baby icebergs and ending up at the amazing blue South Sawyer Glacier to watch the calving ice, sunbathing seals on iceberg chunks, and the bears, eagles, and mountain goats we spotted during our trip there and back. This was our favorite adventure during our Alaska vacation - even more than our two days at Glacier Bay - because the smaller sized boat takes you up close and personal, with great information and commentary given by the captain. It's a "don't miss"!
(4) A fabulous seafood meal at the Twisted Fish in Juneau on the Wharf.
(5) Hiking at Fish Creek.

Comfort of Home Away From Home
My husband and I visited Juneau in April and were very happy with our choice to stay at Betty and Mark's lovely property. The apartment was very cozy and clean, which made it very comfortable for our stay. We felt very welcome and the private entry was nice so we never felt like we were disturbing anyone around. We had everything we needed; Mark and Betty were beyond lovely hosts and ensured we had everything we needed to ensure our stay was great. The location is perfect for visiting Juneau, the view from the room was outstanding... and we were close to everything in a few minute drive. We even enjoyed walks just outside the house, which was very convenient and nice for lazy mornings or afternoons. We would highly recommend staying with Betty and Mark "On The Wildlife Refuge" if you are planning a trip to Juneau.

We enjoyed our stay here. Good views and a nice quiet area without being too far from town. There was a bit of noise from the main house but nothing unreasonable. Hosts gave us the privacy we wanted.

We had a wonderful time at the apartment. The view is better than we expected. The photos are accurate. We had a great time. The change in weather made the stay even better. Location was superb. Great Location, View and Apartment!
Loved our stay with Mark and Betty. Great hosts, nice place, very clean. Best was flyfishing for coho salmon right in front of the house!

excellent value
This is a clean, modern, open space, with plenty of space for sofa, kitchen area, table [overlooking amazing views of Mendenhall glacier and tidal fluctuations,] and bed; laundry, private patio. Hosts Betty and Mark are welcoming, stock frig with breakfast goods and coffee and tea...even boots available to borrow for hikes. You will need to drive 8 miles for restaurants, but the good news is, you see eagles from your window, and can walk rainforest trails within two miles..and can cook in the well equipped kitchen. Betty, our host, alerted us to watch the Aurora Borealis on our last night!
