This cottage is very spacious with 4 double bedrooms, with a huge kitchen and other large rooms downstairs plus a large patio. The kitchen is very well stocked with crockery, cutlery, and all sorts of cooking equipment - easily the best cottage we've come across for these things.
The location is great for access to the hills and although you can walk to Keswick or an eatery, you'll probably need to drive for the most part.
The bits you need to know though:
Firstly, the property is right next to a cattle grid on the road that goes around the house and it's a loud one. There is traffic including buses during the day as it's a through road. It might bother a light sleeper in the bedrooms closest to that corner early in the morning and late at night.
Secondly, the entrance to the drive has a totally unnecessary dip between the road and the gate - perfect for scraping the underside of your car if you don't get the angle perfect. Surely it's not beyond the owners to get this fixed.
The sofas needed new legs too but I'm sure that'll be changed soon.
Overall, great for a large family or (post-covid) two families.

This was our second holiday at Gutherscale Lodge - a spacious and well-equipped cottage in a great location with walks from the doorstep and lovely views from the terrace.
But, we were concerned that it did not feel as if the owners were focused on the details
eg a broken leg on 1 sofa had led to the legs being removed on all 3 sofas - so low and potentially difficult to get out of after a day's walking.
The rubbish bin was completely "rammed", and "overflow" rubbish had been dumped in the grit bin! A phone call to the local council established that the collection day had changed, but not been amended in the house details! Most of the information in this folder related to 2008-9!
There were a number of maintenance issues eg the door on the second en-suite would not close, ceiling bulbs not replaced etc
It is such a shame as we like many aspects of the property, particularly being able to enter via the generous drying room, with benches to sit and remove muddy boots. Perhaps there have been difficulties addressing maintenance issues during the Coronovirus epidemic, but as this is listed as a "luxury" cottage we felt it was not unreasonable to expect these things to be sorted out

Very comfortable house with all the fittings and equipment you could need. Stunning setting and great terrace from which to enjoy the views (weather permitting!).
Could have been cleaner - fridge not cleaned out, hair on bathroom floor, spiders webs in corners etc. but overall a very spacious and comfortable house.

This comfortable, warm and spacious house provided everything needed for a very enjoyable three-generation holiday. The location is very convenient for walks suitable for all ages and abilities, including Catbells and further afield, or down to the lake, as well as for just sitting looking at the wonderful view. (To follow up a previous reviewer's comment, we drove in and out without any car problems.)

Second time I've stayed at Gutherscale Lodge this year. Overall excellent place. However, one big issue. The dip in the ground just outside the gate meant that three times I seriously scraped the underside of my car, although ultimately I found a rather convoluted way of getting in without scraping. This problem also affected one of my friends. This can only get worse without repairs to the area between the road and the gate. I often visit the Lake District and would like to stay again at Gutherscale Lodge, but I cannot do so until these repairs are undertaken.

A lovely house which we've used several times before for family holidays.
A lovely house which we've used several times before for family holidays. The location and views are stunning and the house is generally comfortable. However some things do seem rather tired and not well looked after: seat cushions on the dining chairs are very grubby, a broken cafetiere was left in the kitchen (presumably previous guests hoped it would be noticed and replaced!), the plastic washing up bowl is very old and cracked, we had to report the main fridge which was not working properly. Small things in themselves but for the price of this house we would have expected a closer eye to be kept on maintainence.

This is a lovely spacious house with the feel of a comfy home. We were a party of 5 adults and there was plenty of room to spread around. The location is private but close enough to all the
Lake District has to offer, with walks on the doorstep and fantastic views, we saw a wide variety of birds in the garden, including woodpeckers. It is clean and well equipped. To be helpful the cattle grid outside the property is noisy and walkers pass close by the house, these blended into the background for us and we didn't find they distracted from our holiday. The instructions for the cooker and how to deal with the rubbish were confusing and could do with updating. I think anyone booking this property will be glad they did, we had a fantastic time and may well return again in the future.

Gutherscale is great and every one enjoyed themselves but it needs some tlc.
Gutherscale is great and every one enjoyed themselves but it needs some tlc. Sofas are looking old and the back legs are broken on two and WiFi does not function adequately. The coffee caffetiere glass had been broken but not replaced. Otherwise the size and location still make it a desirable rental.
