About this house rental
PLEASE NOTE: Although the VRBO calendar appears to be open, we are booked for almost all of fall 2024. Our schedule is fluid so please inquire BEFORE attempting to make a reservation. Simply send a message first. There’s a chance of a last minute cancellation.
IMPORTANT: Please tell us about you, your group, ages, home address, purpose for visiting, and if you plan to fly or drive to Massachusetts. Thanks for your consideration as the schedule gets back to normal after several years of Covid and thanks for choosing our beautiful oceanfront home.
"THE BEST VIEW ON THE ENTIRE EAST COAST..." according to previous guests. Come to Marblehead and relax by the ocean. Sit in our hot tub and watch the waves- or grab a chair and umbrella for the beach just below our deck. Jump in- the water is fine. Walk into town for a seafood dinner, explore a museum in nearby Salem. Spend the day in downtown Boston then return- just seventeen miles- to this peaceful setting. Day trips to New Hampshire and Maine.
ABOUT OUR HOUSE: Situated on a rocky bluff, overlooking a quiet cove and sandy beach, with the open ocean just beyond Crowninshield Island. Our contemporary house is located on a private dead-end road at the very tip of the Marblehead peninsula. Watch everything from kayaks to ocean liners drift past this spectacular view. Granite cliffs, islands, beaches, light houses, lobster boats, sea gulls, seals, and occasional swans. It looks more like the coast of Down East Maine, but it's all right here, less than 18 miles from downtown Boston. Easy access to the city by car or nearby train or bus. Please check the map to see our proximity to Doliber's Cove and Grace Oliver beach, just steps below our deck.
Pet free. Our three bedroom, three and a half bath house has three floors, arranged diagonally up the steep granite slope. Two bedrooms are on the lowest level- one with a king size bed, the other with two twins, each with its own private bath and balconies overlooking the ocean. Also on this level is a laundry/storage room. An exterior door opens to our hot tub and down a set of stairs to the driveway.
The middle level of the house has the main entrance, a large living room with fireplace (a metal frame, ten candle assembly is used), kitchen/dining area, pantry closets, and a half bath. However, the huge deck overlooking the water is the main attraction here. Enjoy lunch while watching the boats and paddle boards in Doliber's Cove below. A pergola provides shade on hot summer days. The gardens are also accessible from this middle floor
Our third "bedroom" is a suite on the top floor. It's a combination guest suite / family room with direct access to the rest of the house below plus a separate entrance to the outside, a small kitchenette, and living area with 55 inch flat screen TV. Like the two bedrooms on the lowest floor, this space has a private bath [shower], plus a spiral stair that leads up to a sleeping loft. Up here you’ll find a king size bed and two twins tucked in the eaves of the cathedral ceiling- all in a tight balcony at the very top of the house. Although this small "apartment" is somewhat private, we never rent it out separately. Central air conditioning in this space only- ocean breezes cool the rest of the house. Also on the top floor is a small open office and library, which overlooks the cathedral ceiling of the main living room below.
Fantastic views from every room and the architect/owner has renovated each one of them. A total of four flights of stairs from the driveway all the way up to the sleeping loft, at the top of the spiral staircase. It's a spotless house with nautical decor throughout and, of course, WiFi, along with cable TV in most rooms. Fully stocked for your visit with all kitchenware, utensils, and even spices for cooking. All linens and towels included.
ABOUT OUR TOWN: Marblehead [Birth place of the American Navy] is a sailing / fishing / artist community on a peninsula, just eighteen miles north of downtown Boston. Walk the Freedom Trail in the morning and come back for a swim in the afternoon. It's an easy drive into the city or you can leave the car at home and catch the bus down the street. Beautiful seascapes all over town, but none finer than the view from our house at the very tip of the Marblehead peninsula. Our contemporary house is located on Peach's Point- an exclusive neighborhood of mansions and manicured lawns, all on a private dead end road overlooking the North Atlantic. Walk the narrow winding streets to historic Old Town with its quaint restaurants, shops, and museums. The original painting, 'Spirit of '76” (see photo), hangs in our town hall. Picnic or enjoy a festival in one of our scenic parks overlooking the harbor. Bicycle to nearby Salem, Massachusetts with its Witch History, House of Seven Gables, and world class Peabody Essex Museum. The dunes of Ipswich, the granite shore of Rockport, and the rest of beautiful Cape Anne are a bit farther away. Gloucester- setting for 'The Perfect Storm'- is visible across Salem Harbor. The ski slopes of New Hampshire are two hours north, Cape Cod two hours south, and New York City is a four hour drive.
IN YOUR INQUIRY PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR GROUP (FAMILY? FRIENDS?), THE PURPOSE OF YOUR VISIT, WHICH TOWN YOU ARE TRAVELING FROM, AND IF YOUR DATES ARE FLEXIBLE. If you are in the area- or know someone local- you are welcome to stop by and check out our beautiful waterfront house.

There's a ton to do - beach is so close, we took kayaks out every day. Walked the beach and found lots of sea glass during low tide. Lots of space in the house for teenagers to have their own space. We were on the deck most of the time, fantastic views all throughout the day. Don (owner) was amazing, always checking in to make sure we were OK, and answered any question immediately. I would highly recommend this property.

I stayed at this property twice - in April, 2014, and late May, 2015 and cannot say enough about how perfect EVERYthing was!! The owner is extremely responsive and accommodating. This second visit involved a bit of a reunion with family and friends we, ordinarily, don't have the opportunity to see. We had a FABULOUS time eating and mingling as we enjoyed the deck with its beautiful, serene views. A great part of the deck was that a section was covered, allowing some of us to hide from the sun while others bathed in it. All was PERFECT and our guests stated how much they envied our vacation place. Our teenagers enjoyed exploring the beach and a number of us thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub in the evening. As a previous renter stated, it is true that the spa cover was not able to be removed completely, but we cozily squeezed 5 or 6 of us in and had a great time! Additionally, I wanted to address the "musty" smell a previous visitor spoke about. We didn't detect any sort of smell and found that every bit of this lovely home was clean and neat and met every single angle of our expectations. It does, in fact, have several staircases throughout and may be a bit challenging for someone wheelchair-bound. The rest of us will find the stairs just another nice aspect of this wonderful home that offers some privacy. It was a great gathering place with so many lovely aspects to it. Several of us commented to each other how nice it is to have a couch in the kitchen, allowing visiting while cooking or food-organizing takes place! We ALL collected many cherished memories during this time and my friends and family members have sent a number of emails stating how special it was for them. I cannot recommend this place enough if you are interested in being close, but not in Boston and by the ocean. The views are just lovely from dawn to dusk.

From the moment we drove into the exclusive community leading up to the house, the amazing views say it all!! We thoroughly enjoyed every minute while staying in this oceanfront property.
Just 17 miles north of Boston, this charming New England community is a convenient location from the airport and a great place to enjoy a quiet yet active vacation away from the bustle of the big city.
My husband and I, along with best friends, visited this home last June. Great time, great place and good weather made this vacation awesome!! Being from Arizona we were totally delighted by the lush green gardens surrounding the home. The hot tub was always a nice treat after an active day kayaking, beach combing and touring the quaint towns, shops and restaurants. The kitchen was well equipped and grilling on the deck with friends for dinner each night made for great memories! We stayed in the lower two bedrooms each with their own very nicely done private bathrooms and great ocean views. If needed, the above loft was a really cool architecturally-designed private area.
The owners Don and Barbara were so helpful in many ways. Don's knowledge of the area and travel directions for our adventures were very much appreciated and made Google obsolete!
The experience of waking up each morning to the sound and feeling of the ocean breeze made it very difficult leaving this magical place. We totally look forward to being able to visit this "5-star" home again in the near future!

We vacationed at this house at the end of August 2014. The photos are completely accurate - the house is absolutely beautiful, with amazing views from almost every vantage point. The owner was very attentive to our questions. Small notes throughout the house provided guidance and reminders, which were extremely helpful! The location is perfect, very quiet, with a sweet, small beach just below, and within walking distance to town. The house was clean - BUT we were hit with a very strong musty smell upon first opening the front door. Keeping the windows opened in the lower-level bedrooms helped that, but our asthmatic 72-year-old mother who slept in the bigger of the two lower-level bedrooms had some breathing difficulties at the beginning of our stay. Given the amount of money we spent on this rental, a strong musty smell was the LAST thing we expected when we opened the door.
Our only other concerns are related to what was advertised about the amenities for this property. Under "Suitability", the description states that "one must negotiate half a flight of exterior stairs from the driveway up to the lower level". There are actually TWO half-flights of stairs from the driveway to the lower level. This makes a HUGE difference to the physically impaired (my arthritic, asthmatic mother and my sister who suffers from MS traveled with us and found the stairs almost too much to handle - half of the number of stairs would have been half of the burden for them). The listing advertises and shows a picture of a 6-person hot tub, but we were advised by the owner shortly before our visit to only use half of the hot tub since the cover can't be completely removed for full use. In "Outdoor Amenities", it was advertised that "a propane fire pit installed in the middle of the deck for cuddling on cool nights" was available. Upon our arrival, when speaking with the owner about the chair lift which wasn't operable (we were able to resolve this), we inquired about how to start the fire pit. The owner hesitated, and then reluctantly gave us permission and directions on how to use it, but only "if we were very careful" (or something to that effect).
We do recommend this property, but caution potential renters to confirm with the owner what specific amenities will or won't be available for use prior to your stay. Or better yet - we suggest that the owner adjusts his listing to more accurately reflect the amenities he is willing to allow renters to use!

My family and I had a wonderful Easter weekend here. The house is so beautiful and very spacious. We cooked lobster dinner and enjoyed clams on the grill while watching the cove. This may be my new second home when I travel to town to visit relatives. The owner was very nice and accommodating.

I stayed here with my 87 year old mother. It was a perfect place for us- she could enjoy the extraordinary view from both inside the living room, dining room and from the comfortable deck and I could easily stroll around Marblehead, my favorite American town. The view is even better than the photographs can show and there is endless entertainment to be had in just watching children play in the water or watching the kayakers go by. Although the house has several levels, a stair lift from the lower bedroom level to the main floor made it easy for my mother to get around even on days when she felt weak and arthritic. The extra sleeping areas upstairs and in the loft came in handy with extended family and kids. There was plenty of room (and bathrooms!) for everyone and we never felt overcrowded. The kitchen and bathrooms were all modern, clean and well equipped and the furniture was very comfortable. The location was perfect with enough land around the house that you didn't feel like the neighbors were right on top of you, but near enough to the center of things that you could walk over to the Marblehead Lobster shack for a lobster roll or for a stroll around Fort Sewall. At low tide we could walk over to Crowninshield Island. I highly recommend this amazing house for a great vacation.

This was a perfect place to spend quality time with family in town and take advantage of the sights and views of one of the most hidden gems on the North Shore of Massachusetts. The house was spacious and clean and offered many nooks and areas to gather with family. I must reiterate the views cannot be beat!
