With uninterrupted ocean views, the Maheno Cottages are perfectly located approximately half-way up the east coast of K'Gari (Fraser Island). This location enables visitors who wish to explore the island the ability to do day trips both north and south, taking in all that K'Gari (Fraser Island) has to offer: beaches, lakes, creeks, rainforests, 4x4 tracks, sand-blows and endless scenery. Having undergone extensive renovations, the property owners have spared no expense in ensuring guests have all the creature comforts of home.
The Northern Maheno Cottage, “Tanaka” (the name of the Japanese Captain of SS Maheno when it ran aground in 1935, just north of Yidney Rocks), is a 3 bedroom cottage, sleeping up to 10 people.
The Cottage has full ocean views from a large elevated timber deck, complete with a huge 8-10 seater timber table and large stainless steel outdoor BBQ with kitchen servery - perfect for alfresco dining. A short 40m walk provides direct access to the beach.
Walking through the front sliding glass doors (complete with CrimSafe screens) into the Cottage, you step into a spacious open-plan living/dining area. The lounge room has a large 3m x 3m L-shaped lounge, complete with a 43” television and huge ceiling fan. With high-raked ceilings, the spacious living area takes full advantage of the ocean views and breeze. The dining room adjoining the lounge room hosts an 8-seater kitchen table.
The 3m x 3.5m L-shaped kitchen comes fully equipped with all modern appliances: oven, gas cook-top and range hood, large fridge/freezer, microwave oven, kettle, toaster, and all kitchen crockery/utensils. Further down the hallway you will find a large, modern bathroom (complete with shower, toilet and vanity). With fantastic water pressure and constant hot water heated from the Solar Arc hot water system on the roof (backed up with instantaneous gas), showers will always be hot and enjoyable.
The large main bedroom sleeps 4 people (1 queen bed and 1 king single bunk bed) and has a sliding glass door (with CrimSafe screen) stepping out onto it’s own deck with ocean views. Bedroom 2 has a queen bed (sleeps 2). Both rooms have high-raked ceilings.
Bedroom 3 has 2 single bunk beds (sleeps 4). All bedrooms have 2 port racks, ceiling fans, smoke alarms, security/fly screens and roller blinds on all windows and privacy locks on all doors. All beds are complete with brand-new innerspring mattresses, linen, pillows and blankets.
A third (covered) private deck is provided to the rear of the Cottage (together with an extra fridge/freezer), providing a further entertaining area on those days when the south-westerlys are blowing!
Added Extras:
* ALL BED LINEN IS PROVIDED - bedsheets, pillows, blankets and bath towels
* 24 hour power (48v solar panel battery system) with back-up generator
* Separate (shared with adjacent Cottage) amenities block with a further 2 toilets and 2 showers
* Communal laundry room with top-loader washing machine and external clothes line
* Parking for 2 vehicles and hoses to wash down your vehicles
* External power point to charge your car fridge
* Fully screened (front and back doors have additional CrimSafe)
* Fully insulated walls and ceilings
* Large fish cleaning area and filleting benches (with water connected for wash down)
The Location:
World Heritage listed K'Gari (Fraser Island): the largest sand island in the world. Four-wheel drive through thick, lush rainforest to explore hidden lakes and discover endless tracks.
Conveniently located approximately half-way up the eastern coast of the Island, Yidney Rocks is regarded by many as the ‘jewel’ of the Island, providing ideal access both north and south. Close to many of the Island’s highlights, Yidney Rocks is the perfect base to head north and explore the likes of Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck, Indian Head and Champagne Pools. Heading south will take you to Lake Wabby, Eurong and across the Island to Central Station and Lake McKenzie. Alternatively, take the short 40m walk down to the beach and spend your days fishing, right on your doorstep. From the front deck, immerse yourself with breath-taking sunrises over 75 Mile Beach and during whale-watching season (August to October), watch some of the 7000 humpback whales pass through for their annual migration.
Happy Valley is located only 1km away, providing access to full Telstra coverage, fuel, shop, pub and restaurant.

We stayed in both houses for a week, and couldn’t have asked for a better location.
The house was very clean, well appointed and as described. We had a few small issues that were immediately rectified and the owner was very responsive.
Would highly recommend and can’t wait to return in the future.

Fantastic property for family. Well appointed kitchen, extra bathroom was appreciated, such a convenient location for exploring the island. Comfy beds, extra fridge outside and right on the beach. Highly recommended.

Love being able to look at the water & watch whales going past from front deck. Well supplied kitchen. Close to shop for emergency supplies. No where to put clothes in bedrooms as port racks needed to store crates with pantry items.

Everything you could need for a great Fraser Island Getaway. Perfect central location for easy 4wd travel to all of the
East Coast sites. Inclusive of a great front deck for taking in the morning sunrise and nightly BBQ.

We loved our stay. The house is clean and very well equipped. The kitchen had lots of plates, cutlery and containers for storing food while there. It’s so great that it has the laundry facilities when travelling with a family. We also loved the extra fridge on the back deck. Location was on the left side of the road so not complete beach front as I had imagined, but the view and location was still a favourite spot and we would, and have recommend it to others since.

Perfect location on the island to access all the main sights easily. The property itself accommodated us all easily meeting all our needs. The parking was a little tricky but manageable if skilfully done. I would stay here again and highly recommended it.

What a great place in a great location. Loved our stay here. We hired both cottages since we had two family’s of 4 and it was ample space. The location was great and just a short stroll down to the beach, 5 min drive to happy valley. We were concerned about it not having a dingo fence but in our 5 night stay we didn’t see a single dingo near our accommodation. We loved it and will be back.

The maheno cottages are a lovely place to stay and being centrally located along the east coast makes it a perfect base for viewing the whole island. The cottages are fitted out with everything you could possibly need. We all had an amazing time and will definitely be back.

Comminication from booking was perfect. Information was sent in a timely manner. Cottage lovely and clean over looking the beach. Close to major facilities and attractions. Great value for money

We booked this accommodation cause it looked amazing on the website but disappointed with the cleanliness when arrived. Windows & screens were terrible, blinds in 2 bedrooms were broken. Main screen door wouldn't lock. Grass wasn't mowed around clothesline & 2nd bathroom especially shocked when we were told there was a snake around there in the rocks. Grout in bathroom was mouldy. Similar thoughts from family living in house next door. We expected better especially paying so much money for the stay.

The property was stunning - beautiful view of the beach, easy to live in house, BBQ facilities were great. A truly awesome place to relax.

This island is absolutely devine. Unfortunately we had awful neighbours at the front of the property who painted a bench seat 'maliciously' and damaged my sons tracksuit - it was totally ignored by the property manager. We were also charged a cleaning fee, a list was left and completed by us thoroughly, other items were added to the list and not communicated once we had left., pretty disgusting behaviour really. We were basically charged for not sweeping sand in the corners of the house, when the location is the largest sand island in the world "go figure" (1 broom provided no vacuum, I might add) - absolutely disgusting and quite embarrassing for this property really! Overall as a guest who has never complained in all our 20 years of traveling and booking holidays, this is the worst. And in fact bad enough for me to take the time to write this review.

Dads last Fraser trip after 70 years visiting
Easy booking and checking, great caretakers and upkeep of cottage. Only thing I’d change is the shower pressure and the ability to make temperature changes so it’s not scalding hot or cold.

Central Location at its finest
Our holiday was amazing thanks to the location of this little gem. Perfect for site seeing Lake McKenzie Wabby and Eli Creek but not too far from the top end for day trips for fishing or other site seeing. Thank you

We were lucky enough to be able to stay here. This property would easily fit two families. Second bathroom is outside though. The house had everything you need to be self sufficient for your stay. The view is amazing . It’s located just in the right place to see all that there is. I would definitely stay here again
