Location of Black Gem Cottage is perfect. Very central in Whitby and just a short walk from the public car parking.
This is a quirky old cottage but the owners have done their best to modernise and add all the required amenities. Underfloor heating was perfect after a chilly day walking. I personally love these little cottages of Whitby as they're extremely cozy.
The sofa was a struggle to seat 3 adults and 1 child and the cushions kept slipping but I imagine this is to ensure space is maximised for the area it is in. More feedback than criticism

The lovely old fashioned tea room and deli a few doors down on the other side of the street. The cottage is about halfway down the street and one end of the street opens into the junction where the swing bridge is over the harbour so it’s very handy for everything. I liked the tiny rooms and low ceilings.
The cottage stank of wet dog, when I opened the door before I stepped in the smell wafted out and I thought it was damp at first, my husband walked in and the first thing he said was it stinks of damp, then after a few minutes my child asked why the blankets and settee smelled of dogs and I realised it was a wet dog smell. Dogs are allowed and maybe dog owners can’t smell it but I found it over powering, I had to buy some air freshener from the shop. I didn’t like to sit on the settee and couldn’t relax, I forced myself not to look in corners for muck, they need to get rid of the dark blanket on the settee - when I looked I could clearly see dog hairs. Its not double glazed either, so the seagulls are a lot louder than the ones we have where we live, I saw a planning application notice for a nearby cottage who were applying for permission for double glazing and I saw other nearby cottages with it so it’s possible to upgrade the windows. Also the bathroom fan could be heard in the bedroom in the night so I turned it off at the switch in the bedroom and then the bathroom light wouldn’t work. I thought the yard outside was private as it looks to be in the pictures but the other few cottages down the alley also use that space for access. It looks pretty in the pictures but a bit shabby when you get there. If it didn’t stink it would be ok. Because there’s no dishwasher and the pots were washed by someone who was leaving and rushing and didn’t really care they weren’t very clean. The knives forks and spoons are the cheapest most rubbish ones you can get and had water marks on them and a few plates and bowls, horrible black plates and bowls, had blobs of old food still on them. There’s so little room I can see why there’s no dishwasher but they need to check it’s been done properly or get a mini dishwasher. I didn’t use the washing machine but would have used a dishwasher more than once.

Location was suberb. Right in town and so close to everything. Cottage was lovely. Stair may be a bit steep for anyone with mobility issues.
It was advertised on booking.com as having a parking space which was not the case. This was major reason why we chose it. Public parking was nearby but had to pay - £40 for 4 days.

Location was fab beautiful cottage in great Loction, heating Floors really cosy n warm
no freeparking, single beds squeaky and Settee too low
4.3
Location was exceptional and surprisingly quiet.
The water was terrible if you wanted hot water it dribbled out before turning warm then cold and eventually hot before repeating over and over. This included shower and basin in bathroom.
The seating in the living room. Had no back support and was supported by a few cushions. It was also very near to floor, so difficult to get out of.
The parking advertised is nowhere close and very difficult to get into and out of without damaging car.
The two beds lower down were squeaky and lacking firmness.

Was a nice cozy cottage. Had everything we needed and was very comfy. We all enjoyed our stay thoroughly.
Overall very clean, few cobwebs in the ceiling that could have been removed but wouldn't complain.
4.3
Excellent location and a very warm cottage and Nicki and Graham extremely kind and helpful.
The car parking space is a godsend
Sofa and double bed not overly comfortable but when you think of how much they're used,it's not surprising
4.3
Location, well equipped and maintained
Squeaky single bed, WiFi didn't work
4.3
Fabulous, comfortable cottage in a superb location.
Designated car parking space a big bonus too.
Whitby is such a great place.
WI-FI doesn’t work! A router merrily flashes away, but it’s impossible to connect to. This is not a new problem as it was mentioned in a review several months ago. Contacted owner who is due to organise a new router, however, this didn’t help us.

The door lock needs attention. It was a little temperamental at times and took a while to open the door from the outside.
4.3
The mattresses were comfy. There was lots of necessities stocked, plus some bits like games wich was a nice touch.
It’s in both a great and not so great location - good as it’s literally on the high street, you can walk everywhere in Whitby town in 5 mins.
The house is not child friendly, if we didn’t have a cancellation on our other air BnB so late then we wouldn’t have booked it.
The main problem is location. It’s so central that it’s incredibly noisy. Although down an alley with a metal gate saying “private no access” this didn’t stop some lads coming through and sitting on the bench under the window at 2am doing drugs, kindly offered me some, I declined and asked them to leave as they were loud and I didn’t want my son to wake up. The solution is to either get rid of the bench or put a lock on the metal gate.

Liked enclosed courtyard for pets. Liked privacy. So perfect we have re-booked for December. Location brilliant. Next door to a lovely bakery.
Nothing.

Head height in double bedroom a problem. stairs steep.

Absolutely perfect size and location for a break. Everything you needed was at the cottage. Incredibly comfy and cosy.

Couldn't get WiFi to work thats the only down side very minor

The location
Parking!!!! When you look at the ficilitys it says parking on site no need to book but the parking is 5 mins walk away and can only access the road your on is after 4 to unpack then you have to move your car, I found this very difficult. If it stated this at the beginning I would of not of booked it.

Fabulous location for all local amenities. Loads of shop/ pubs and dog friendly .
On arrival at the property we were met with the carcass of a dead pigeon in the passage way, pieces of cardboard and general rubbish. Having said this ,on day three someone swept the yard and made it much nicer.
The property itself is very dark and one bulb in the kitchen area had blown making it even dimmer.
The blinds in bathroom and bedroom were broken and the bathroom mirror light didn’t work making contact lense fitting tricky.
Felt like the downstairs had not been de- cobwebbed in a while as plenty hanging from ceiling and corners. Small things and easy to put right.
All in all we had a lovely stay and would definitely stay again.

An attractive small cottage, nicely decorated and well equipped. Very central and convenient but still quiet and safe.
I found my single mattress saggy and uncomfortable although my son found the double mattress fine
4.3
excellent little cottage well equipped, great location. could not have asked for more.
would recommend. had its own parking space which is a added bonus.
4.3
Great location, modern and fully stocked kitchen, nice bedrooms and lovely decor throughout. Nice touch to have tea/coffee available as well as essentials like salt and pepper. Quiet at night even though in the middle of the town.
The WiFi was patchy and kept losing connection.
The hot water facilities could have been better. When it came out it was scalding but then soon went cold in the kitchen and the upstairs hot water was via a separate heater but this was a slow trickle and again was scalding.
The stairs are tricky.
4.3
Good location for central Whitby stay.
Parking space provided which is good for Whitby where parking not always easy in town.
Well equipped property - washing machine, fridge (with freezer compartment), TVs (we brought Chromecasts), WiFi, kitchen utensils, towels etc.
Helpful and responsive owner.
Attic bedroom can get very hot in above average hot weather.
Lots of noisy seagulls in area early morning and night.
Some noise in early mornings from activities related to businesses in close proximity.
Setting not very picturesque - cottage located in alley which houses row of bins, and is next to a bakery shop’s back door where staff often smoke outside.
Some areas a little worn e.g. two blinds broken, sofa not the most comfortable.
TV reception not very good.

Brilliant location

Location could not be beaten.
The seagulls outside the bedroom window at 4am! Lack of dishwasher (would replace the washing machine as not needed).

A true Whitby cottage experience. Compact cottage full of charm. Had to be careful on the stairs but that added to it's charm. Perfect location in the town centre. We loved it.
