Amazing historical property, calm, food is delicious and rooms are very comfortable
Typical ryokan, lots of character and charm. Staff is helpful and food is delicious

We stayed at this beautiful traditional Japanese inn at the start of our journey along the Nakasendo Way. The staff spoke enough English to answer our questions which we really appreciated. We let the hotel know in advance that we needed a gluten free dinner and breakfast and they went to an amazing effort to accommodate this request. The meals were utterly delicious. We booked a small twin futon room and it was small as expected but perfectly comfortable and with amazing views. The shared bathrooms were easy to book at check-in and very clean. A lovely hotel with friendly and helpful staff in a gorgeous mountain town, thoroughly recommend this property.

立地と旅籠風の風情が良かったです。
宿の方も丁寧です。
男性トイレが地下一階で2階分階段から下がらなければなかったのがやや面倒。
料理は普通でもう少し特徴あっても良かったかと思いました

An authentic experience in a stunning post town on the Nakasendo trail. The hosts are very helpful and provide amazing food for dinner and breakfast as part of your stay. They are also excellent at allowing for dietary requests. The private onsen bath is also special. Highly recommended.
For seniors like me, the traditional futon on the floor sleeping was a challenge however it is part of the experience.

The food was amazing, the location perfect (just a few minutes walk from the bus stop, on the left hand side of the path) and the staff really helpful.
Be aware there is a flight of stairs if you need to go to the toilet during the night. It is very well lit though.

We had a fantastic stay at Tajimaya guesthouse. The whole experience was wonderful from the welcoming owner and staff, lovely room, great dinner and breakfast. The host sang us a welcome folk song after dinner and later in the evening showed us how to dance a traditional folk dance. We even got to try out the classic wooden ‘flip flops’ to do so. It was a brilliant start to our stay in-country before setting off on our hike on the old postal road to Tsumago.

Located in the middle of Magome, we stayed in an old traditional Japanese inn. The room was cosy with tatami mats and foldable beds. Our room had an on-Suite toilet. The views were nice. Japanese dinner and breakfast were included and delicious. Already an experience in its own.
There was an onsen bath which was nice (it was organised with a time slot for privacy). You could have normal showers in the morning too.
The staff were lovely.
Everything was well organised.

Nothing to dislike!

Friendly staff, diner and breakfast were excellent. Locastion of the property is great for starting the trail and exploring Magome.
As it is an old style inn it is quite noisy.

Amazing property, and super cute. The food is absolutely spectacular. Tasty, well displayed and very large portions. Having the private usage of the bath was also great, especially after hiking there from Tsumago.
It is honestly like living in a Japanese fairytale or myth. Our family truly loved this place, and the entire experience was the highlight of the trip.
Oh, we also got a room with a private toilet, I think the only one in the property, so that was a win!
If you see this place as available, book it. Staff are kind, helpful, and super nice. And there was a beautiful welcome song at dinner.

My wife & I stayed at Tajimaya for one night on our Nakasendo Trail walk. The ryokan is beautiful and located right on the main street in Magome. The staff were so friendly and kind. Our stay included both breakfast and dinner and the food was great... fresh, healthy and filling. The private bath was very nice. They required you to reserve a 1/2 hour time slot upon arrival.
Our room was on the top floor and the men's bathroom was in the basement and there were two flights of steep stairs to get down to it. Not a huge deal but if you have trouble with stairs this could be very challenging! There was no coffee at breakfast that we saw but the tea was great! Our tatami room was a split where the sleeping and lounge areas were next to each other but you had to leave through the sliding door into the hallway to go to each one. I'm not sure if all the rooms are this way but it was a bit odd.

Sato and Kayoko are wonderful hosts. Thanks for explaining traditions , singing and dancing :-)
They cared for everyone and all requests were answered immediately.
Please note ,that it can be cold in the room/ryokan at night ,without using the AC, if you stay in colder season as it s an old traditional house. Use some warm sleeping clothes.
We would come again for sure, if we are in the area! :)

The Tajimaya is lovely and authentic! We used google translate to communicate with the staff, who were so nice. We took the train from Tokyo to Nakatsugawa, where there were taxis outside. We used google translate to taxi to Magome. (There is also a bus, but we didn’t want to wait for it.) We dropped our bags off and walked the Nakasendo to Tsumago, then took a taxi back to Magome. There is a bus, but the last one had gone by the time we arrived in Tsumago. The dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast were so good! All the guests wore the yukata we were provided to dinner. After dinner, there was a traditional Japanese celebration dance. The rooms were cozy and comfortable, and the shared bathrooms had plenty of toilets and sinks.

Hara-San is an amazing host. He teached us a typical samurai dance and it was very fun and interesting. It was a very nice way to learn the culture of the region.
Also, the food was excelent and felt super comfortable.

Nothing really.

Very clean
top location
bedding was thick, clean and very comfortable
This is a lovely old inn but renovated to remove the old Japanese architecture. Not much soul of the old place left.
4.5
Excellent multi-course dinner and breakfast. Perfect location in the hillside Nakasendo post-town of Magome and right on the walking trail. Beautiful views in all directions.
Would have liked seat backs for the zabuton cushions in the room. Walls a bit thin.
4.5
Food was phenomenal. Some of the best Japanese food I’ve eaten in Japan.
The hotel is old. In a charming and interesting way of course. But if you’re after a modern, chic ryokan experience, this place is definitely on the traditional end of the spectrum.

Meals were prepared with great dedication and both presentation and taste were amazing.
The rooms are very traditional and perfectly well maintained, and the Japanese bath in the evening was an unexpected highlight.

The Ryokan is in the center of Magome, an absolutely scenic wonderland. This hotel is in the center of this wonderland. The rice we had for dinner and breakfast are homemade! Staff are kind but they stayed within safety distance, sometime you can't see them but you can hear them :) I felt alone in the whole town. If you get early (you have to because the breakfast is 7:30) and walk around in the town, your only companions will be birds.
I went by the beginning of summer, but it was quite cold in the morning (I'm ok with) even it was about 25 degrees during daytime. But for people who want to stay in the winter, better to prepare warmer clothes.

Great location and well kept. Good dinner and breakfast!
Room was a tad too small even though it was for two person.

Great location, delicious meals and very warm hospitality!

Lovely staff. Excellent breakfast and dinner. Central location in Magome, close to start of Magome-Tsumago trail.
Although English is almost non-existent, this causes no communication problems at all. Just such a great place to stay.
4.5
Location right in the centre of the picturesque town of Magome. Was nice to walk to town at night when quiet with lights. Unique style of accomodation. We were given two rooms, one for sleeping and one as the lounge room with a table in it to relax and drink tea etc. Friendly staff. Huge dinner and breakfast (don’t eat too much lunch before you stay here!) This is a Ryokan so has shared bathroom facilities.
Ok for us but has lots of stairs so may not suit everyone. One of the rooms smelt a bit funny.
