Great breakfast. The staff were wonderful and helpful. It's a small family-run hotel and they are attentive and want to give a great experience

Guests will receive a warm welcome from Akira-San at the Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya, a Ryokan which has been run by the same family for three generations in the main street of the Shibu-Onsen village. The Ryokan is very well-managed and efficient, with two spa rooms and a restaurant on site. As a traditional Ryokan rooms are carpeted with spotless tatami throughout and toilet facilities are shared, but also spotless, and are separate from washing and onsen spa bathing rooms. Bedrooms equipped with floor-sleeping futons are large and in winter well heated with an electric stoves. The day starts early with a traditional healthy Japanese breakfast prepared by Akira-San and his family. Akira Yamazaki is a helpful and gracious host, who also makes excellent coffee. We highly recommend a stay at Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya for an authentic experience of traditional Japanese hospitality. We will certainly return!
Shibu Onsen village is a picturesque street lined with older Ryokan, restaurants, and bars. The local restaurants have an excellent range of local food, but bring plenty of cash as it's mostly a cash-only town and we did not see an international ATM.
A coin laundry is located a 10-minute walk away from the Ryokan towards the train station along the main riverside road. The prices are ¥500 for a small wash, ¥100 for 10 minutes of drying time, and ¥100 for soap.
A public bus serves the town area and monkey park, but everything (except the monkey park) is within a fairly convenient walking distance. The Yudanaka train station is only 5 minutes away from Shibu Onsen by bus, costing ¥210. Alternatively, it takes 25 minutes to walk there. English information about local buses and trains is available from the helpful Yudanaka station staff.
Wake up early to visit the snow monkeys before the arrival of out-of-town tour groups. The Snow Monkey Pass sold by Dentetsu Railway doesn’t offer great value unless you arrive very early on the first day of the two-day ticket.

Very nice breakfast and onsen
Maybe make the room smell nicer.

Beautiful and well equipped Ryokan with very spacious rooms. Superb breakfast prepared by Yumi which includes unique flavors and local ingredients. There are two on-site Onsen that can be used anytime and you can access 2-3 other public onsen. Akira San is very generous and helpful and even offered to drop us to the station. Shared toilet but this was spotlessly clean and always available.

This was an incredible stay - a highlight of my trip. The host went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable - helped arrange taxis, even prepared a vegan breakfast for me, and the onsens were lovely. I'd highly recommend.

We had a wonderful stay. The hosts were very welcoming and kind. We really liked the onsen in the hotel. The village was beautiful.

Beautiful property! Clean, comfortable, peaceful & quiet. Love the little outdoor garden accessible from the 2nd floor.

I stayed here for 2 nights, having previously stayed at shibu onsen for 1 night (note that this property is slightly outside the shibu onsen area). This was by far my favourite. The private onsen in the property is divine. It was my favourite onsen during all of my travels around Japan (I tried many private and public onsens).
The hosts were so lovely, always smiling and friendly, very helpful and provided me with maps and many recommendations for restaurants in the town. The town is very sweet, the people are lovely.
The snow monkey park is walking distance on a fine day, but there are also buses and the hosts will even offer to drive you there.
I will visit again and am looking forward to returning to this accommodation to stay here again :)
No complaints at all :)

If you are looking for a cozy, authentic Japanese style, clean and comfortable mattrass, a dedicated sens of service from the owner Akira who will give you the places to go to eat the best sushi in town etc,.., you found the place at Yamazakiya Ryokan! The "Onsen" was gorgeous too and what a so romantic time going around those 300 years built streets of Yamanouchi, wearing the typical kimono and shoes after the hot bath in the Ryokan! It was definitely my favorite spot in a road trip around Tokyo so far! thank you so much for your kindness and professionalism Mr Akira, and your lovely family; your daughter for sure will become a virtuose at piano 🙂 . Definitely The place to be!

Lovely spot with wonderful hosts. Breakfast was delicious, and Akira-san was nice enough to drive us to the train station when we left because of the rain.
Really nice to book the onsen for private slots as normally couples need to separate.

Akira went out off his way to be an exceptional host. He picked us up at the train station, drove us to and from the Snow monkeys, helped out with every request - no item was too minor to ensure a truely Japanese experience- the rooms, robes, onsen, and the traditional breakfast was an experience (We should have also booked dinner).
The location is great as well.
The town itself has seen better days, but there are some jems to be found. Go with the flow.

very homely, the owner Akira san, is such an amazing host. When we were stuck outside due to heavy snow, he messaged us and asked if we needed help.
a little far from transport. Ideal if you drove, but would be a bit hard to access public transport. Also wish there was an outdoor Onsen

It's a traditional Ryokan so it's a different experience to normal accommodation.

Traditional Ryokan Onsen stay. The owners are wonderful and always willing to answer any questions. The Onsen is nice and hot after a cold day, and the booking system means you can easily share with your family and everyone gets a private soak.
I could say that sleeping in a futon is not for me, but that is not a problem with the accommodation. It was still a great experience.

The ryokan is located in the heart of the Yudanaka-Shibu-Kanbayashi onsen area with easy access by train and bus, a pass to the snow monkey resort bought at the Nagano station will serve you well. The property itself was very neat and well kept and the hosts extremely warm and welcoming made us feel right at home. The rooms were well kept, cozy and warm……we did not opt for dinner/breakfast but it could be arranged with sufficient prior notice….Akira san and his wife also gave us some nice coffee and warm milk for the kids in the morning with a plate of fruit. They were also kind enough to drop us off at the snow monkey park around 10 minutes away by car. The onsen/ofuro is also very well kept and clean….will definitely be back!!

The property is the authentic traditional family run Japanese Onsen setting which we like the traditional Japanese style. There is a private onsen which we can use and we need to do booking to go onsen which we are fine with the arrangement. The room are clean and spacious.
We need to share toilet and the western toilet area is quite small. Not much leg room when you sit down to do your toilet business.

comfortable room and onsen for private use. owners are very friendly and easy to communicate with. they were able to pick up from and drop us off at the train station, making our stay very easy. we weren’t able to eat there but the cooking smelled really nice!

The property is extremely clean and beautiful. The location could not be better. The owners are incredibly kind and gracious. I highly recommend staying here!!
Everything was absolutely lovely!!

We loved our experience at this traditional ryokan. The food, room with a view, private onsen, and welcoming owners were the highlights of our trip. Although this ryokan does not give you the key to the 9 public baths, a stay here is highly recommended as their private onsen is much nicer than the public baths.
Everything was wonderful.

The location is situated on one of the main streets through town, making it perfect for exploring the surrounding area and touring the onsens. The room was completely clean and tidy, with an enclosed balcony that had a fantastic view of the river. The proprietors/hosts were gracious and polite; I couldn't ask for better service.
4.8
the breakfast and dinner was superb
the family is super cute and welcoming
the room is big and clean and comfy
its not a part of the shibu onsen association so you don't get to visit the famous 9 onsens

I loved everything. the owners were really nice and kind. the food was great. the onsen was amazing. the town was beautiful to walk through.

Shibu onsen is a very small location, like a tiny village, so everything is a walkable distance.
The main reason for me going there was to see the monkeys in the onsen during winter, and I was lucky enough to see them, the hotel owners will gladly drive you to that location and pick you up when you are ready (about a 15 min drive). The lady hotel owner is also trained in a Thai massage technique called Tok Sen, something I had never heard of before, but I booked a 30 minute massage in my room and it was a lovely way to relax before sleeping.
The breakfast and dinner was outstanding, I definitely recommend you trying at least the dinner. The hotel's natural onsen was also the best that I tried in that area. The local onsens are very old and small, and most of them are to hot to actually enter, even the Japanese ladies that I encountered could not go in, but there is an 8 onsen challenge which if you complete is said to bring you good fortune, and it is free to do, so that was fun but the real onsen where I could relax and bathe was at the hotel.
Unfortunately, at one of the local onsens, I left an expensive watch, and it seems someone took it instead of handing it in, I was quite upset, and the lodge owners tried their best to help me find it and even took me to the local police station to file a report. Other than this bad piece of luck, I really enjoyed my stay here.
Free coffee offered with breakfast instead of being charged would have been nice :)

I had a very relaxing stay, with lovely hosts who did their best to help me everytime I needed.
The place is ideally located in the heart of the hotspring village of Shibu Onsen.

location is great and Akira and Yumi very nice hosts. My room was very large. The onsen was enjoyable and everything was very clean.
Toilet in the room would have been appreciated...

Akira and Yuki are fantastic hosts. You are greeted from the moment you arrive and they go out of their way to help you choose the best spots to visit in Shibu Onsen. The kaiseki style breakfast served in the morning was absolutely fabulous. A bonus feature of this property is that they have their own private onsen- which, as the only guest at the time, I had entirely to myself. Akira and Yumi’s home allows you to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan. I hope I get a chance to visit them again.

Yumi and Akira looked after my friends and I with incredible caring and friendship. We felt like we were such important guests, nothing was too much to ask. They organised early breakfasts for us when we wanted to leave on early buses and Akira even drove us around to find a favourite restaurant that we couldn't relocate! He organised for us to be taken out to a restaurant and be collected again after the meal. Loved the little touches, like a special handmade gift of a tissue container and even a delicious apple each for our onward journey. Small gestures on their own but added together made for a wonderful stay. Enjoyed that two onsens that had different times so males and females could go to either onsen. We didn't end up having dinner at the ryokan but dinner smelt amazing each night - Yumi is such a wonderful cook. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful breakfasts each morning in our private breakfast room. Not sure if they organised the monkeys to visit....but we say some wonderful antics outside the rear entrance on two separate occasions. No need to go to the Monkey Park nearby! We stayed one week and had an amazing time.
My friends weren't so keen on catching a bus up/down the mountain each day but this slight inconvenience was far outweighed by the wonderful ryokan and all the extremely helpful and friendly staff and also the opportunity to be able to go out to explore the town and restaurants nearby instead of being isolated in a ski resort.
