I enjoyed Hotel Tsubakino because it was very close to the train station. We were able to walk down a small hill and a around a corner from the train station and there it was! The staff were friendly and had us sit to explain ryokan’s and give us fresh apple juice before showing us to our room. We were able to book the private onset for four people for about $35 USD for an hour and a half. We had two people in the group who are vegetarian and they provided phenomenal traditional Japanese breakfast even with this request. I liked the variety of mushrooms, eggs, soups etc… In the morning we were able to take a taxi to see the snow monkey park. I would stay here again. It was a fun experience!!!
The traditional beds were not as comfortable as beds I am used to but it was okay for a night. Everything else offset this inconvenience.

We liked the location, the service, the food, pretty much everything was first class. All the staff members were very attentive and polite. We do not speak Japanese well but we got by smoothly with the staff as well :)
The only offside about the property was that our room smelled a bit funky. Though we have noticed the same smell in other tatami room in other properties as well. Thus, it could be just that we are not used to it.

great location. staff very friendly, onsen was beautiful
the beds were traditional, felt like sleep on wood and the pillows were very hard.

great place, wonderful onsen at the rooftop plus free drinks at the bar in the evening! breakfast was delicious too

Staff spoke English and were professional and friendly. The breakfast, Japanese style, was superb. They have a nightly Sake bar that is great following the Onsen. We took advantage of the rooftop private Onsen and it was so relaxing. The hotel is located within walking distance from the train station, bus station and taxi stand. There were tons of restaurants in the immediate area and the food was phenomenal at all that we tried. The beds were comfortable and the room was extremely large. I will definitely return on my next visit.

The breakfast (and dinner) were stupendous and delicious and very enjoyable. I would like to extend my highest commendation for the service of the staff. They all went out of their way not only to communicate properly but was very attentive and receptive. Highly recommended!!
There weren't much to do or see or buy within walking distance of the hotel.

The breakfast was spectacular. We ate here 3 days, one western style and two japanese, all were unique and tasty 10+ tasting style breakfasts. Especially with the difficult we had finding breakfasts elsewhere, this was over the top good. The private onsen was also a real treat, it did cost extra but the hour long soak in a pair of private, outdoors, hot bowls was worth it.
Bedding was japanese style which is what we wanted, it is a traditional japanese ryokan after all, but we had to ask for extra mattresses to really get comfortable.

big rooms, close to the train station, nice staff, amazing breakfast. Plus they have a nice sake bar in the lobby for the guests and an option to reserve a private onsen
nothing

Great location! A short five minute walk from the train/bus station. Friendly staff. The private onsen on the roof is highly recommended.
Nothing.

Stylish up class Japanese lodging with very attentive personnel. Spacious rooms with good tatami mats, thick mattresses and super fluffy duvets. The outside Onsen baths are supreme too - a very nice and relaxing space!
Maybe a little impersonal with enclosed dining and breakfast for the group, but that’s more of a personal preference I guess.
