The guys running the hotel are just great! The room was one of the biggest we had in Japan. So lovely to stay with them for 5 days and very easy to reach from Kyoto station

4.5
Great location near the train station and also with a couple of tasty izakaya options to eat nearby.
Access to a washing machine would have been awesome!

It was our first time experiencing a traditional Japanese style room and it was very nice. The beds were comfy and the facilities were also great. The hotel had air conditioning which was needed for our stay during the hot summer.
4.5
Awesome place! If you want to fully immerse into japanese culture then this place is for you. The beds were comfortable and the room is quite spacious for Japan, overall good value for its money. The staff is very helpful and give good recommendations on places to go. Recommend this place to everyone.
4.5
Very cute with great amenities such as washer and also close to the train station and central Kyoto.
Everything was great.

The room was spacious, the futon was very comfortable. We had the ground floor japanese style room with the view on the garden. We loved our stay at Ayame, our host gave us some great tips about local restaurants. It was only one stop from Kyoto station. We would definitely stay again here the next time we travel through Kyoto.
The hotel is not next to the old part of Kyoto but it worked fine for us (Nijo castle, the imperial palace, Arashiyama, are all easily accessible with the JR train), for the old part you can easily catch a bus or go to Kyoto station and use the local trains.

very kindly staff.
beautiful garden.
clean and quiet.
comfortable beds.
because of double room, maybe it will be better to provide two keys.

We loved the location of the hostel on the JR Line and how clean it was. The main thing that we loved though was the host, who gave us so many recommendations for sightseeing and restaurants. He was incredibly friendly and helpful. We would stay here again.
There was nothing we disliked.

Amazing Ryokan! Very comfortable with beds on the ground instead of futon (gives you the vibe and is nice for the back after long days of walking). One stop away from Kyoto station, easy to get to. The garden is lovely. The hostel formula makes it so you can have access to a kitchen and fridge. I highly recommend especially for the price!

It was in traditional style and we had private bathroom.
We couldn't open the window, and the window itself was not transparent so it was not pleasant to stay in the room during the day because of this.
It was though clean and the mattresses - comfortable.
Also there is not exactly a common room in that hostel as it does in most hostels, since the sitting area was in front of the reception and did not set us at ease to stay there.
4.5
The private room was fantastic, very comfortable pillows and spacious.
The facilities were well kept.
The location was good, very close to a train line and bus stops.
My only gripe was that in one of the mattresses you could feel the springs whereas the other bed was perfect.
4.5
Close to the Umekoji train station (approx. 5 min. walk). The room is in a more traditionnal japanese style, which is cool.
Unfortunately, the room was cold and not very well lit (we were there in late april, I would not recommend staying there during winter). The shared kitchen isn't really functional. Our host was nice but seemed a bit uncomfortable/inexperienced.

The room was spacious and beds were comfortable! The place had a real cosy atmosphere to it. The hosts were friendly and welcoming. Thanks to Shogo (not sure of your spelling sorry) for all the recommendations of things to do and see.
The location was slightly out of the way but plenty of bus stops near by

Really nice staff and excellent recommendations. I really enjoyed the stay the room was simple and clean perfect for couples and solo traveler
Not much other than for tall people few things might be on the smaller side but nothing to worry too much.
4.5
The room and the hostel are spotless, I love the garden a lot! The staff is very helpful he gave us useful information for our trip.
4.5
excellent location
good ramen shop , bakery and restaurants nearby
The room has 2 levels. The bathroom is on lower level and bedroom is on higher level. It is not convenient to walk up and down. Not suitable for people who have problems of walking stairs.
4.5
The host is super lovely, the place is cosy and clean. My room (ground floor with garden view) was really nice and spacious, good bathroom and separate toilet.
I think next time I would book in a different location, closer to the main attractions. Also, I think the price was a bit too high if I compare it with other great locations I booked during my Japan travels.
4.5
The atmosphere was very calm and relaxing, the bedding was very comfortable, and the staff was very helpful
10am checkout is a bit early

The staff was very kind, spoke a good English, keen to give you recommendations, and helpful (they offer free luggage deposit after the check-out, booked a taxi, and helped us with the luggage).
The kitchen was well furnished (you could easily cook a meal).
The room was very spacious.
The kitchen was not kept very tidy/clean at all time.
There is a washing machine, but not a dryer.

We got a beautiful traditional tatami room with a nice view over an inner courtyard. It was very big with a bedroom and a tea room. Even though it is a traditional tatami room you sleep on a proper mattress they place on the floor, which is much nicer than the uncomfortable futon.
The staff was amazingly helpful and definitely made our stay even nicer. They always tried to help us with recommendations. There was an earthquake on our last evening (scary but not destructive) and they came to our door after a couple of seconds checking if we were ok.
When we left no one was in the reception (they had some problems in another location because of the earthquake), but they left us a heartwarming note with their best wishes and even wrote a sentence in Portuguese (our mother tongue). We couldn't be happier with our stay at Hostel Ayame. Great great value for money. We will be back for sure!
During golden week we stayed in 3 hotels and this one was by far the best one even though it was the cheapest.
The only thing I can think of is that the toilet is kind of outside, since you access it through the balcony, which on a cold day can be a little bit uncomfortable. The shower was inside and very nice.
