About this cabin rental
Kayak or canoe across to historic Castine--30 minutes by water or 45 minutes by car--or explore the many inlets and islands of the Bagaduce River. Listen to the call of loons as you enjoy our ever-changing sunsets. A variety of games and puzzles and a collection of books will keep you occupied on a rainy day.
Brooksville, with a total area of 33.8 square miles and 53 miles of coastline is home to Holbrook Island Sanctuary, a pristine nature preserve, and also the Good Life Center, the last homestead of Helen and Scott Nearing (authors of Living the Good Life). Pastoral, rolling hills and scenic blueberry barrens are plentiful throughout the area. There is a Farmer's Market every Tuesday morning in Buck's Harbor during the summer months.
Acadia National Park, with a road to the top of the highest mountain on the on the eastern coast as well as hundreds of scenic hiking trails, is just over one hour away by car. Don't miss visiting the Wooden Boat School in nearby Brooklin; Haystack school of crafts on Deer Isle; and Kneisel Hall, famed for world-class chamber music, in nearby Blue Hill,
This fully renovated two-story camp on the edge of the water maintains its rustic atmosphere. New in 2015 is a small roof over the entryway (in case of rain). From there, you step into the "mudroom" where there is a coat closet and behind another door, a stacked washer/dryer.
Step through the glass french doors to the living room where you will find HARDWOOD OAK FLOORS, a BUILT-IN HEARTH, and a SOAPSTONE WOOD STOVE with a CATALYTIC COMBUSTOR--BURNS LIKE A FURNACE, BUT IS AS LOVELY AND GRACEFUL AS A WORK OF ART. The living room is furnished with a recliner and a full-size sofa as well as a smaller cushioned chair and a coffee table. A large sliding glass door in the living room opens to a fully-screened porch. Cushioned seats and coffee table grace the porch as well as a folding chaise/recliner.
The kitchen is fully supplied with dishes, pots and pans, mixing bowls, and includes a lobster pot, drip coffee pot, coffee bean grinder, tea kettle, toaster, blender, electric mixer, microwave oven. An efficiency-sized gas range allows for more countertop space.
Bathroom has large mirrors over the sink and lots generous-sized cabinets. There is a shower with adjustable shower head, and the linen cabinets are fully stocked with towels and washcloths.
As you walk up the stairs (with carpeted runners), you will come to a landing with large windows to the southeast and southwest. The upstairs has a cathedral ceiling with a ceiling fan and track lighting that can be dimmed for a tranquil ambiance. There is a large, high triangle window in the main upstairs facing southeast to let in plenty of early morning light.
Both upstairs bedrooms are cozy with Skylight windows in the lower part of gambrel roof, giving excellent water views.
The boat room has life jackets and paddles for the kayaks as well as a long, knotted rope to use to ease the kayaks up and down the slide (next to the stairway to the water). There is a gas grill with two gas tanks, and a backup charcoal grill. A portable wooden ramp is there to help move the grill in and out of the boat house. There's a wooden stairway that takes you down to the water and next to the stairway, a slide to make it easier to get the kayaks down and back up again.

I've been going to Driftwood Cottage every summer for the past 5yrs, and it never gets old. It's the perfect getaway in a great location. Jane is fantastic to deal with, I feel very comfortable interacting with her on whatever may be needed. The screened-in porch is one of my favorite places to be! Thank you, Jane, for keeping this place so special!

Screened porch almost sits right over tidal beach. Charming & peaceful.

Driftwood is a wonderful place to stay. It is impeccably clean, peaceful, and spacious.
We were there for almost a week, it was great to just hang out ; as well, we never ran out of interesting things to explore in the Blue Hill area and into nearby Deer Island.

A home-away-from-home.

I cannot say enough good things about this rental, the property owner, or the location. The owner was very responsive to any needs we had. The location was PERFECT, not just for access to the water, but also for access to local restaurants and. Would happily stay here again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I stayed for 3 days this summer and enjoyed every part of the experience. The house is beautiful, with water views and peaceful trees surrounding the property. We took the kayaks out and stopped for dinner in Castine. Also loved dropping by Tinder Hearth just nearby - magical spot. Hope to come again!

The cottage is just as advertised, and in a wonderful location.
The owners are also great, and communication and check-in were easy.
We had some great meals at Buck's nearby, and Cry Babies in Stonington.
We highly recommend, but only if you're looking for a great stay in a peaceful, beautiful location.

Lovely property, private and very peaceful. Would certainly return.

Great location. Good communication. Second bed is quite small but there is a fold out single reclining chair for another bed.

Cozy cabin. Well equipped. Nice screened porch overlooking water. I needed a fire several nights and there is a good wood stove and plenty of firewood and kindling. Tides are a challenge at any shore property on the peninsula and you need to watch the tide tables and plan accordingly. Close to Tinder Hearth bakery.

This is an adorable little cottage off the beaten path. The kitchen was well appointed which was nice because I like to cook. The only down side was the bed in the larger bedroom. It is too small for two average sized adults and sags in the middle. Aside from the bed I would highly recommend this cottage.

The cabin and location are perfect. We’ve been visiting yearly for a few years now, every stay feels special!

The house was perfect. It was a nice quiet spot and considering how secluded it was not that far from everything. The screened in porch was perfect. It was our morning coffee and evening relaxing spot. We were not brave enough to venture into the water. The rocks were a bit slippery but the view was beautiful. A definite go to when we go to Maine again. Thanks Jane.

Great location, no t.v., just peace and quiet. Lots of birds. The tide is extremely drastic, at least 100 feet from tide to tide. Acadia National Park is a good hour but the drive is scenic. In the summer be prepared for the crowds. Drive back is slow. Highly recommend Young’s Pound Lobster. Thank you Jane for opening up your lovely cottage. Maine is beautiful!

The cottage was clean, airy and was well maintained. The location was perfect and day trips to preserves & trails were easy to get to.
The host was easy to reach and very pleasant to deal with no matter the question. It was tranquil and so enjoyable that we are seriously considering visiting Driftwood again.

Perfect house to explore the peninsulas south of Mt. Desert Island. The house is clean, quaint, and cozy. The host made sure she was on call if we needed anything!

The cottage is even nicer than in the listing photos. Loved the beautiful wood floors and wood interior, very nice condition and comfortable furniture. House is immaculate and well appointed with all supplies you might need. Spent a lot of time on the screened in porch with the nice breeze off the water, and walks down to the shorefront at low tide. Upstairs sitting area is so nice and bed very comfortable. Would love to stay again.

This renovated house is very private, and very comfortable. Beds are great. Great porch. The host anticipated our arrival on a rainy damp day by turning on the wood stove so that we would be comfortable. House is 15-20 minutes away from a terrific bakery/pizza place and Walker pond. Only drawback--waters edge is rocky and being 81 and 75 we could not easily launch the kayaks.

Peaceful and beautiful location overlooking the Bagaduce tributary to Penobscot Bay. Jane’s thought of practically every detail and contingency and her conveniences are helpfully tucked nearby. We loved sitting in the screened porch at sunset and watching the (surprisingly substantial) tides go in and out. Heat wave at home while we’re sleeping cozy with the windows open! Enjoyed great hikes locally and, of course, an hour away in Acadia. Beautiful Maine!

This cottage is beautiful. It has everything you could hope for in a peaceful getaway. It is spacious and tastefully decorated. The workmanship of all the renovations is top-notch. It is right on the water, with good water views from inside. The screened porch allows you to enjoy being outside no matter what antics any pesky insects have in mind! And the host is welcoming and thoughtful. We hope to come back.

We enjoyed every minute here, every dawn, every low-tide and high-tide and every sunset. We could have spent our entire stay in the cabin and had a wonderful time, but we also took advantage of nearby trails, and a day trip to Schoodic Point. The location is somewhat rural, but if you need something, a beautiful grocery is not far away in Blue Hills. Do not miss Tinder Hearth Bakery, a small jaunt from the cabin. Their almond croissants and bacon cheddar chive scones are fabulous. Our host was wonderful and we hope to return.

My wife and I booked this property to celebrate our 31 wedding anniversary. The property was everything we wanted; quiet, great house, beautiful sunsets, great hostess who went over and above to make our stay memorable.

This cottage was located on an amazing estuary. The screened in porch was the perfect place to sit and watch the tide go in and out. The quiet was quite enjoyable. The cottage was well appointed. Everything you would need and more. Plenty of space for the four of us to visit and be on your own, whatever you wanted. The owner was accessible and helpful. Checked in to make sure everything was going well. Lots of great places to visit within driving distance. Hiking, gardens, restaurants, and more. Lovely bakery just down the road that was so good! Go there and enjoy the quietness of Maine!

This sweet, rustic cottage is everything we had hoped it would be. Situated on a quiet bay we watched loons, ospreys and seals from land and used the kayaks provided for hours of exploration. The cottage is close to so many natural areas with great trails and rocky beaches. What a delightful place! The owner, Jane, is a great communicator and lovely person.

This was our third year renting this cabin. It’s always clean and organized and in immaculate condition. I can’t say enough good things about the location. It’s perfect for day trips, since you can come back to a quiet and peaceful spot. Highly recommend!

Lovely summer retreat right on the shores of the Bagaduce River as it opens up into Castine harbor. Very nice updates to a classic Maine cottage!

We so enjoyed our stay at Driftwood Cottage! Jane could not have been more welcoming and accessible, which set the tone right from the start. This house is just as described with gorgeous views of the water from warm, welcoming rooms and screened front porch (we spent most of our time out here during the day). The sunsets at the cottage are spectacular.
The house was neat and tidy and well stocked with anything we needed. There is beautiful wood throughout and the upstairs study/family room is perfect for evening puzzles and games. We enjoyed unplugging from TV but appreciated having internet to keep in touch.
We took advantage of Jane's kayaks and gear -- all provided with the house, which was so convenient. We kayaked daily and saw seals playing at sunset -- unforgettable!
Up the road (5 min drive) is the bakery, pizzeria, eatery Tinder Hearth with fresh pastries and bread daily. We also ordered delicious pizzas to take out. The house is very convenient to Blue Hill and on to Acadia -- under and hour's easy drive.
All in all, a wonderful stay. We are very grateful to Jane for sharing her house with us and we will be back!

My husband and I had a very relaxing week at Driftwood cottage. A few nights were cool enough to have a fire in the wood stove. The view looking out at the water from the screen porch and kitchen window was so beautiful. A few trips to Blue Hill filled our needs for groceries and fresh fish and everything needed for cooking was provided in the well-stocked kitchen. Walks and hikes were not far away. Jane was always available to answer any questions that we had. Loved it and hope to return!

Beautiful and quiet location on the Bagaduce River. Cottage was very clean and had everything we needed. Great area for hiking, and kayaking right outside your front door. Good local eateries in area and one hour drive to Bar Harbor. Would definitely go back again!

The home and property is pretty secluded and very quiet. The views of the water are beautiful. Easy hour ride to Acadia and you can access a handful of restaurants, grocery store etc. within a half hour. Would recommend!

We spent a relaxing, peaceful week in this pristine cabin right on the water. We enjoyed the kayaks and sitting on the screen porch, listening to the bird songs. It's in a great location for exploring the Blue Hill and Deer Isle areas. Thank you again!

This was the best VRBO we have ever rented!! It was a spectacular location, away from noise and neighbors. A beautiful and charming cabin, with recent updates that were historically correct for it's age, including real pine paneling! All very artistically and lovingly mastered. Very clean and well stocked. We loved the kayaks and outdoor space for grilling and dining. The ocean tide limits your swimming and boating times, but it was easy to work around. When the grill was being fussy, the owners offered to deliver a new one, immediately! The ultimate was sitting on the screen porch, overlooking the water!! We didn't want to leave. It only has 1 bathroom, which could be an issue for some. Our only dissapointment was the firmness of the beds. Our older bones need some padding! We can't wait to return next year! Highly recommended!!

This is an amazing spot, on the water, rural in character (yet close to Tinder Hearth and Bagaduce Lunch), magical at sunset, with a wonderful house, second story overlooking the water, perfect screened-in porch for having friends over, well-equipped kitchen, washer/dryer.....and a kayak ramp. Jane is a wonderful host, our stay wasn't long enough.....

It was honestly a privilege to be able to experience this magical cottage and wonderful setting! We loved looking out over the cove from the screened-in porch and listening to the gentle lapping of waves as we lay down to sleep at night. The cottage has everything you need to enjoy your stay, from a fully equipped kitchen to a grill to a couple of kayaks. And Jane is an attentive and host who clearly cares about making your experience as fulfilling and enjoyable as possible. We hope to return next summer!

Beautiful cabin, as advertised. Fully stocked with all the basics you'd need. Very clean and comfortable. Beautiful view. Kids loved looking for crabs and shells in ocean. Exceeded our expectations.

We absolutely loved the setting and getting away from it all. Being on the water gave us something to relax and enjoy every day. The house was very clean and the owner was very hospitable. Highly recommend!
