Buildings are visually linked to the environment and are inseparable partners. The architectural style incorporates form and texture, and this is repeated in the garden with striking contrasting shapes and leaf formations created by a variety of trees and conifers. The original subdivision was purchased in England in 1847. The irregular shaped and sloping land provides the opportunity to express individuality within the bounds of the surrounding historic hedging of Hawthorn, Holly and Laurustinus. Originally part of the Derrymor estate, it is believed that in the late 1880s Mr Walter Hawker established the garden in typical Victorian style, with large European trees, including the stand of elms now dominant within the garden. When purchasing the land, taming of the hedge was a priority so as to preserve the integrity of the historic streetscape. Although an informal garden, formality is created by patterned layouts of cloud clipped conifers and English Box hedging, the imposing wrought iron gates and stone pillars atop with bronze winged griffin lamps. Topiary, including, life size animals have been created in areas throughout the garden.
The garden framework was dictated by an existing driveway that divided the land, established tree plantings, the outcrop of exposed rock on the east and the sloping contours of the site on the west. The garden is divided into special areas and sections defined by paths and hedging designed to arouse curiosity. The large trees and delineated sections provide micro-climates. Lily of the Valley flower well under the elms and Cyclamens, Cliveas, Primrose and Polyanthus continue to flower there, into the early summer.
The garden is in a constant state of change, the awakening of Spring with a carpet of Bluebells, Daffodils, Tulips and Hellebores. Oyster Plants provide texture and height as a backdrop under the trees. Foxgloves, Canterbury Bells and Marigolds in contrasting and exuberant colours are planted for late Spring and Summer displays. In winter the static ornamental shapes of the conifers and the sparseness of the landscape are encircled by swirling mists. Autumn tones are provided by the elms, the Japanese Maples, Pin Oaks and a Manchurian Pears.

This was a magical place to approach (though watch out for the sharp turn onto the entrance road at night in the rain). Fantastic feeling and great comfort throughout the rooms.

Amazing experience
It was my Fiances birthday weekend so thought I would give her the Disney weekend away considering we won't be able to get to Disney land for a long long time. The castle is beautiful and full of character. I would whole heartedly recommend staying, the surounding suburbs, Crafers, Stirling and Aldgate are also wonders to drive/walk through keeping your head up and eyes to the sky with huge trees and beautiful sights.

Amazing and wonderful. A place from fairytales that you wouldn't believe exists, but it does!!!
If you wish to feel like a princess in a castle this is the place to stay. The hospitality was above and beyond. The grounds are gorgeous and the rooms are beautifully designed and the attention to details astonished
and delighted us... We are beyond satisfied and honestly we don't want to leave, but as all good things must come to an end, so does our wonderful time on the grounds of Thorngrove Manor.

A fairytale come true
I surprised my new fiance with a night at Thorngrove Manor and she was absolutely blown away. Incredible doesn't even begin to describe the magic of this place, built by the owner Ken for his wife. Ken put in an incredible amount of effort to create a castle that could have very easily been built hundreds of years ago. His attention to detail, including the array of antiques he has displayed all contribute to Thorngrove Manor being a truly unforgettable experience. We will definitely be back!
