While very small it is beautiful, especially the restaurant. The staff is very nice and helpful.
The “onsen” is very small. Our room was looking to the avenue so there was street noise all the time. We bought the dinner and breakfast. While both were beautifully presented, most of the food wasn’t our taste (it was the only food we did not like in all of our trip to Japan). I feel that the money spent for this place and the food was not worth it.

Set just next to Yasaka-jinja, the location of this ryokan is perfect. I cannot recommend this stay more, particularly for those looking for a traditional ryokan experience. The staff were lovely, food delicious, and the rooms were exceptionally clean. A must for Kyoto!

I liked the old feel it gave.
I didn’t like how hot it could get at night during the summer.

Superb authentic ryokan with the amenities of a big hotel. Bathroom are small but they reflect the ryokan style.
Would have been nice to have a choice of breakfast after having the very good and big Japanese breakfast for a couple of days.

The rooms and communal spaces were extremely charming and beautifully maintained. The beds are really comfortable and there is a lovely wooden bath. The dining room is beautiful, we especially enjoyed the heated floor under the tables and getting to wear the robes to breakfast and dinner.
We had read that staying at a top Ryokan is a once in a lifetime stay and this is certainly reflected in the price (£600 for one night). It is where you are supposed to experience famous Japanese hospitality at its best and be transported to a little oasis for your time there. We arrived on a main road and lugged our extremely heavy suitcases up the stairs to be greeted by a stern receptionist. We were told the time of our dinner and breakfast and left in our room (to have green tea which was nice) but left with no other information, like when we’re supposed to wear the robes, etc, other than where the tv remote and robes were. You can hear the road and crossing very loudly. Because there’s quite a high turnover of guests staying for one or two nights, it all felt very impersonal and we actually had a much warmer welcome experience at a little Airbnb the following day in a ski resort. If you love raw fish, fish broths, and intensely fishy seasoning etc then you will enjoy the food. We knew that being English and not enormous fish lovers that the food would different and challenging (and that it was a set menu not designed to be changed) but we wanted to try everything and experience something new. Both meals were beautifully presented, interesting, and prepared with care just sadly not to our taste. Overall we are glad we stayed as it was a unique experience but it sadly fell short of our expectations.

The experience with the Ryoka personnel was so lovely and caring.
Everything was prepared and delivered with highest quality and finess. A true gem in Kyoto

Always an amazing stay at Yuzuya Ryokan! The location is perfect, right in the heart of Gion, the food is exceptional (I highly recommend both breakfast and dinner). The Staff is extremely welcoming and the on-site sento bath is a great amenity after a long day of sight seeing. This spot is my go-to whenever I am in Kyoto.

The property is an almost 100 years old building but well maintained and looks very beautiful. Their breakfast was amazing. My wife (Russian/British) doesn't like Japanese breakfast usually but she loved it.

Breakfast and dinner are great, the variety and taste of breakfast exceeded my expectation.
Since it is an old school Japanese inn, the the door frame is a little low, have to watch out.

At the beginning I was worried because the structure is close to a busy road ( nearby a temple ) but once you have crossed the gate and entered the ryokan it seems to be in a new magical dimension. Everything is immersed in the shade that gives a pleasant ancient and mystic atmosphere, in the center of the structure a beautiful green moss garden shines, another garden with artificial waterfall and a momiji tree can be admired from the dining room and from one of the bedrooms. Large transparent windows give the illusion that the inside and the outside are not separate. Yuzu a Japanese citrus fruit that gives the name to the structure seems the main theme: you can find it in the small and pleasant shared Sento bath, as a decoration in the private bathroom and as an extract in the drinks. The room is a traditional Japanese style ryokan room with tatami and grace wood decoration, in addition there is a small square sento in the wood bathroom. Maybe it’s because of the located in the center of Kyoto, but I can say that was one of the best ryokan experience I had in my 7 years in Japan.

Excellent breakfast and dinner.

Food experience was amazing and the staff was so helpful and lovely.
We might not have read up on how small the actual bath was. It was a great bath just a tad small. We absolutely loved it though.
