About this house rental
This beautiful, nine bedroom, art-filled home with an enormous wraparound porch and a huge, fully-stocked kitchen is a mountaintop dream come true. An hour and a half from upper Manhattan and walking distance to Sam's Point Preserve hiking trails, the house has both kitchen and pantry sinks, two refrigerators, a dishwasher, espresso machine, a smoker and a grill, and a huge array of kitchen appliances and cooking utensil.
The house is just down the road from the beautiful hiking trails of Sam's Point Preserve, which is connected to Minnewaska State Park, and an hour from art at DIA Beacon and Storm King. The new Legoland is about 35 minutes away. There are many wineries, and for the warmer weather there are so many swimming holes and hikes nearby.
The house is the perfect place to spend time with friends and families drinking coffee in the morning sun in the library, cooking together in the massive kitchen and sharing a meal at the dining room table that seats sixteen. At night you can watch movies in the huge living room and there are plenty of games for kids, including foosball and an air hockey table inside, and croquet and badminton outside. The house is located in a quiet mountaintop town which is on the National Historic Register. Situated on four acres with a big grassy yard, the house is a short distance from New Paltz, Kingston, Woodstock, Accord, Lake Minnewaska, wineries, cideries and countless antique shops, and it is 40 minutes from Woodbury Commons.
This house was built for landscape painters in the late 1800's to go to the mountaintop and paint, and then was run by the Cornell University hospitality program in the 1950s. Remnants of the history are seen throughout the house, from the steel and glass windows in the library and some bedrooms, to century-old telephones. Please be aware, this is an old house in a historic district, and we are trying to maintain as much of the original details as possible. It has the charm of an old house, but if that is not your thing, it may not be the house for you.
It is not intended for parties or loud groups, but it is perfect for extended families, multiple families or groups of friends who are looking for a place to read, cook and have dinners together, play and enjoy the snow in a sunny, warm house. It is a historic home with a lot of character, and does not have air conditioning, though because it is mountaintop, there are always breezes and it cools off quickly in the evenings. It is a great house for kids, both inside and out.
We are often able to allow for an early check in and late check out, so if that might be beneficial, please feel to ask!

The house is genuinely spacious. It easily accommodated our group of 15 people. There are nine real, full-sized bedrooms, and the common spaces are supersized, including the dining room & kitchen, and the glorious, endless wrap-around porch.
It is an old house, a little frayed around the edges, and probably not the right choice for those who prefer new, sleek and immaculate. But we loved its quirks and charm. Its former lives as a boarding house, and later as the home of an artist, are very much on display: The ceramic "Ladies" sign above a second-floor bathroom; the vast collection of art books in the library.
It's also a wonderland for children, overflowing with games and toys and fun places to play.

My family voted unanimously that this place is it! We are 6+4 significant others, so 10. We had our own spaces and ample commons spaces to gather, cook, eat, read and more. We love the proximity to hikes and climbs. The kitchen went beyond expectation.

Gathered with friends to celebrate a bachelorette party. Really beautiful and charming home! Bedrooms all very cute and shared areas are spacious and well decorated. Definitely appreciated the fans in each room as there is no AC. Kitchen is AMAZING.

We had a lovely visit. 14 of us ages 5-80+. The home accomodated us so well and the host was wonderful. The kitchen was the best stocked kitchen we've had. Great hikes lovely quiet area. We had a blast and will return.

I was looking for somewhere that had many rooms for single and couple adults to stay at for a long weekend birthday celebration. It was super difficult to find somewhere with rooms relatively the same size and separate/private, until I came upon this listing. That was the impetus, and the reality was even better than we could have imagined. We spent most of our time in the large kitchen/dining room: cooking, eating, laughing, conversing, and playing games. At nights we would all go into large living room for more games. The breakfast nook and library was a great place for people to get some work done or for smaller games of dominos or a puzzle. We were there in the dead of winter, and there was plenty to do indoors as well as nearby, though I can only imagine how great the property would be in warmer weather too! A few of us went on the 3-mile loop trail hike and overlook at Sam's Point Preserve (3 min drive); we all went to Speakeasy Motors Distillery (15 min drive) one day; and to Arrowood Brewery & Distillery (30 min drive) another day - all super highly recommended. We had 3 dogs with us, who all loved the the place too. I was amazed at how many supplies were included with the house - I'd say way beyond the basics. Tons of spices and condiments, oils and baking supplies, dishware, glassware, cookware, barware and even party decorations, which were a happy surprise. Would 100% stay here again! Thanks, Rob!!

This is our 2nd stay at the Cragsmoor house. The host, Rob, is incredibly kind and communicative and the house is perfect for gathering with a large group. We were 10 adults, 2 kids, and 2 dogs and there was plenty of room for everyone to have space but also gather together. The house itself is quirky and full of character and art, which adds to the fun of staying. Can’t wait to return again!

The house fits the description. While it is still being renovated, it is completely usable and has a lot of character. The usable rooms are all well kept and comfortable. I was worried about the house being possibly drafty but Rob assuaged my doubts before we arrived and we didn’t have any temperature issues while there. We like to make big family meals, especially around the holidays, and the kitchen was a dream kitchen for us. I have no negatives to share. It’s a great house and the owners make it even cozier for families with a mountain of toys for young kids to play with. We had a great stay and would definitely stay there again.

This was a wonderful place for our multi family, multi generational group to gather for Thanksgiving. Well equipped kitchen, large sunny dining room, lots of space to spread out. Beds were comfortable, house overall cozy and warm. Check-in and out very easy. The house is old and that shows; for us that made the house interesting and unique. The bathrooms are dated but were functional. The location is superb and we got in some wonderful hikes.

My large group of friends and family had such a wonderful time at this old historic boarding house.
The kitchen was stocked and ready for us with new condiments and even extras like Smores fixings. We were also able to cook and grill easily with all the provided cooking implements.
The house is clearly mid-renovation but somehow that didn't bother a single person in our group of 14. The charm of such an old historic home was enough to offset any cracked plaster wall.
There was SO much to do! The kids played and played with all the games and toys.
The yard was great to play or also relax in.
We had a gorgeous hike of the Gunks a mile away. Even the weather was fantastic.
Thank you, Rob, for providing this fantastic house that contributed to such a memorable trip.

We could not have a asked for a better location, home and host for our yoga immersion weekend. Rob was a fantastic, giving and attentive host. The house is beautiful and so well equipped to host groups. Highly recommend!

This was a wonderful space to gather with friends for a weekend. We held yoga classes and singing bowl sound healing sessions in the living room. The space was perfect for our group, the owners are wonderful to work with, and the bedrooms were all cozy, warm and quiet. We were all feeling so fortunate to have spent time at this home, and hope to return soon.

Our group of friends was looking for a place for a weekend upstate together, and this house was absolutely perfect for it! Everyone had their own room, with plenty of space, and a beautiful, well-equipped kitchen for cooking meals together in. Rob was also extremely responsive and helpful. We are looking forward to coming back!

Our family of 12-ages 9-80 has a hard time finding the perfect spot for our annual vacation. We finally found it. Rob’s house in Cragsmoor has more than enough bedrooms and a great common space. There is also ample outdoor space for badminton, bocce, basketball and more. The house has everything you need for a relaxing vacation and it’s near hiking trails and a few minutes from Ellenville. Or just sit on the porch and watch the birds. Rob is a great host.

We had a fantastic time staying at Rob's house. The house was perfect for our 15-person group, with a large kitchen for cooking, a great dining room area, ample space for relaxing on the deck and playing games in the grass, a fire pit for night-time bonfires, and a large living room for some team building events with our group. We will go back again!

Perfect for a family get together, four generations spent the weekend (ages 3 to 97). Kitchen has everything you could possibly need to cook and serve a large group. Plenty of bedrooms for everyone, comfortable beds. So many toys and games for the kids, indoors and out. Love the wrap around porch, plenty of seating for everyone outside, for dining or lounging all together. Lots of artwork everywhere, just beautifully done. Everyone wants to know when we can go back!

Quiet, warm, brilliantly put together. The layout of the spaces can't be beat, the bedrooms are cozy, the house is full of character, and Rob has been amazing from start to finish.

This house is great for getting lots of friends and family together. It's full of character and things to discover. It's the sort of house you can easily imagine your family having come to for generations. The kitchen is a real highlight. We cooked a full Thanksgiving meal for 4 families without breaking a sweat. Also the Sam's Point Preserve just up the road is gorgeous. I hope it's the beginning of a tradition for us.

We had a wonderful time - this place is ideal for a big feast with all new appliances, fully stocked kitchen, a double oven, long dining table, big picture windows, and plenty of rooms and space for all. Very close to Sam's Point, an excellent hiking location for all ages/abilities. It's a unqiue old building with quite a history that completely charmed us. There were some unexpected details, but nothing that dampened our experience. The host was extremely responsive and helpful. Some things to note - only 5 parking spots available (we had to arrange carpooling), the bedroom doors can lock requiring a key (I accidentally locked my kid in a bedroom after putting him to bed, but the host was able to quickly let me know where I could find the key, thankfully helping to avert panic), heating is somewhat inconsistent throughout the house (not uncomfortably so), and the level of finish throughout is a little inconsistent but in a charming/rustic way. These are details that come with the territory of the location/age of the house, and worth bearing in mind, as it's not for everyone. All in all, a fabulous and unique experience was had by all! We would book again!

My family rented this house for our annual fall fun getaway and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Easy to find, walking distance to Sam’s Point, large enough to accommodate a big multigenerational group with different spots to relax in and remarkably warm (may sound weird but we’ve stayed in some cold homes). This house is charming! It’s artistically decorated with lots of fun touches from nice soaps to really interesting artwork. And clean! The host is responsive and pleasant and easy going - truly a pleasure to work with. I’d definitely stay there again.

An older home with very unique rooms. The kitchen and Back porch were big hits. Group of fifteen able to sit at large table for dinner. Plenty of room for large group. Beautiful sunsets and deer roaming around. Would rent it again.

We had a wonderful weekend in Cragsmoor at Rob’s large, unique country home! It was the perfect place for our group of multiple families from different states to meet. There was plenty of space for everyone. The kitchen was perfect to accommodate everyone and for multiple people to be cooking together. We loved the character of the old house and furniture but with many modern accommodations. The house was extremely well stocked with pretty much everything you could think of!! We had lots of fun playing family Olympics in the large yard and the tree swing was greatly enjoyed!! We did a group hike at the top of the mountain with stunning views. We did have some trouble with parking reservations and I would suggest making reservations in advance. We did not feel safe walking up the winding road, especially w kids.
Rob was an amazing host and provided lots of information and ideas and was very prompt with communication.
Thank you so much for having our group and we would definitely return!

The house is a classic old house with character and charm. The large wrap around porch with tables an seating was a great.
Great location if headed to Minnewaska (or breweries). We just had a neighbors and friends weekend at this quaint, old house. It is a great place for a large gathering. We had plenty of bedrooms, as well as inside and outside seating on the great porch along with a large lawn area.
The house was well stocked - abundance of kitchen items, outdoor games, indoor toys, seating, books
The host was great and there was great communication starting with the confirmation and through to us checking out. Entry / exit for the house was made easy with the use of a keypad.
The one thing I would say is that the house is still being renovated so there are still things to address including the need for a fresh coat of paint and screens on all the windows.

Fantastic spot for our annual family gathering
One of the most unique and charming places we've stayed at for our annual, early-summer family reunion. Loved it.
The large building is soulful, bedecked in beautiful painting and has a good kitchen for cooking. The wrap-around porch was magnificent for our family gatherings.
Kitchen well-stocked with plenty of dishes and cooking gear for even our large group.
The dining room table inside accommodated all of us at the same time, and comfortably. That's a first even in the largest houses.
Rob was responsive and accommodating, even made accessibility modifications to the house support one of our family who was recovering from a fall.
It all made for a great week.
Highly recommend for large family gatherings upstate.

Sam's point Inn
This is an interesting place, location is great, for those that are planning on staying in the vicinity. Lots of amenities, room for multiple family members. Weather was cool, and refreshing.
Reminder this is an older Inn and has lots of history, and know that it will bring back memories of the olden days. A feel things for the owner to add would be how and where the lights can be turned on and off, how to operate the thermostat, also this Inn has a dirt floor cellar and it has a musty odor with the damp air. The 3 rd floor shower did not have hot water, but we managed with the other 3 BR's. Over all rating was good. we all enjoyed ourselves especially the solitude. Thank you again for allowing us to use this facility.
Ulla and Kent.

About 10 coworkers and I stayed here for a work retreat and would highly recommend the property to similar groups. The house is historic yet beautifully renovated, and had so much space for our large group. Rob was incredibly communicative and accommodating, and there was a surprisingly wide selection of restaurants in Ellenville (just 10 minutes away).

I found this house when looking for a spot my extended family could spend time together. Most houses that sleep many people have at least one room full of bunk beds or something, but I loved that this one had so many bedrooms, allowing everyone some privacy and space.
The house itself is huge and set up well for big gatherings. The kitchen and dining area is truly great, with lots of light, a massive table, and enough dishes/flatware to feed an army. In this ay, the house could probably do with another dishwasher! It did have two refrigerators, which we found very useful as well.
The house is very old and eclectic, with all the charm as well as drawbacks that go with it. Sound travels! Some doors don't fully shut. It takes a bit to coerce the hot water to come out of the shower head, etc. But these are things that we didn't mind and gladly traded for the space and time together.
We did have an issue with the heat at one point, but the owner found two different people in town to come look at it within an hour and we really appreciated that!

What an absolutely beautiful home and for such a great price. We loved cozying up here this January and cooking big meals in the incredible kitchen to share around the big table! The host was so communicative and kind and the house was truly one of a kind. I can't wait to get a group together to head back and see it in other seasons.

It's a rambling old beast but it has all the best vibes. We do this trip every year and this was one of the absolute best--such a fantastic and relaxed gathering space, cozy and friendly and comfortable all at once. A fair few patches around but honestly that kind of made us love it more, will hopefully be back again!

Wow! What a magnificent space in particular the massive kitchen and cooking/serving supplies! This was the absolute perfect place to host a weekend retreat. The pictures do not do it justice and the surrounding mountain and state park was so convenient and beautiful. Rob was a tremendous host/manager and helped with any questions that would come up. Looking forward to being back here soon!
