I arrived off the ferry and went to the hotel early to drop off my bags. I asked a person on site where I could take my bags and she said I could go wait in the kitchen. I got there and was asking in Spanish if I was in the right place. Someone else told me to stop speaking Spanish and just speak English. I'd been on my trip for several weeks already and this was the first time anyone insisted that I speak English. When I returned later to check in, they tried to put me in room 1A but the outer door lock was broken. They moved me to 1B, but in that room many things were broken or dirty--chair, tables, bathroom door. If the staff had just been a little nicer, it would be easy to overlook the problems with the room. It was frustrating to have to pin the bathroom door shut with a table because you can't leave the door to the bathroom open in most tropical places or the AC will escape. Plus the table I had to use was sticky and broken. Please see pics.

Honestly, it was not what you see in the pictures. If you want to go to a good place in PR, that looks folkloric and rustic where you can at least feel save while you sleep, this is not the place.

The staffs was really great and helped me every time I need, but the room I was was not so good, it was hot and the facilities in the bathroom were really poor

I traveled solo for the second time and as a woman, it can be a little nerve racking. The staff and volunteers at Casa Santurce made me feel so welcomed and even though I arrived at 2am after the check in hours were closed. One of the staff members, Kelly, happen to come out and get me into my room! I was so thankful and grateful! I was ready to sleep on the floor lol. Sadie, Wasabi, Justice, Carmine and Sunny were such kind and real straight up people! Which is hard to find so thank the Lord for them !! They helped me figure out the bus, activities I could do and genuinely were just fun to hangout and converse with. I’m loving this hostel life and even when the AC broke for one night they were so apologetic and quick to get it fixed the same day! They were even willing to move any of us to a different room with a working AC if they couldn’t figure it out. But they did! This house is also pretty central to anything near San Juan so it made getting around with a quick Uber or even to walk. The other people staying in the hostel were also super friendly and great to check out places together with when I didn’t want to be by myself! This is a great place to meet people from different parts of the world and turned into some good new friends! Gracias por todo Cafe Santurce y nos vemos pronto!!!

I didn't like anything about the property. It was dirty. The bathroom was dirty. Very little water comes out of the shower while taking a shower. The toilet never stops flushing by itself. There's roaches running around the room, some got into my suitcase and at that point, it was very late at night but I managed to book another Hotel I called an Uber and got the heck out of that place. I managed to stay only one night. I still had 3 nights left, but they refused to give me back my money for the remaining nights. Worse place EVER!!! I will not recommend Casa Santurce to my worse enemy. I still would like to get my money back. Expedia should not promote this place on their site.It makes you guys look bad. This place has so many bad reviews and I should have read them. I wasn't thinking. I still want my money back.

I stayed in a private bedroom. I didn't receive the self check in email. Luckily, someone who worked there was hanging out and could help me after hours, as I arrived after midnight. The room is extremely basic, but the bed was comfortable. There was electricity when I checked in. There was A/C. There was Wi-Fi. No electricity, and no water whatsoever on the property nor neighboring properties due to an electrical outage in the neighborhood when I checked out. I did get a quiet and comfortable night's sleep.

When arrived checking in host letme know there was no power, i left and found another location. I know is not their fault but i need a refund. I still have two nights book on 16th and 17th hopefully the issue is solved. Ill call before showing up for sure. No harm done.

Unsafe, unsanitary! Power went out, no running water, bugs started invading room, mosquitoes and cochroaches!

The staff is friendly and will take you the best places to go out for nightlife in the La Placita neighborhood. However, beyond that, everything was bad. The air-conditioner did not work, and despite asking the staff about this, no solution was provided, other than being told to unplug it and plug it back in. This led us to need to leave the windows open to have some air flow, which meant we were covered in mosquito bites after our stay there. Mind you that we were there in February, and it was ~80 degrees at night, so the heat and stuffiness would have been way worse if you were there during the summer.
It is also very loud in the area -- roosters, cars, other people at the hostel, etc. The beds were not comfortable, and the sheets had stains. The bathroom was very small (you could not sit on the toilet the correct way, had to sit sideways) and did not have a mirror. The pictures advertise an indoor common area, as well as a kitchen with a full fridge, but there is only an outdoor kitchen area with mini-fridges that were very full already and not cleaned. Some of the stairs are broken, and you have to be very careful about where you step for your foot not to go through a certain part of the stair.
The wifi did not work at all. In addition, there was only one towel for two people in the room, and we had to ask for an additional one. Overall, the hostel is very rundown, and despite the cheap price, I have stayed in cheaper hostels that were in farrr better conditions.

Had a wonderful stay at Casa Santurce! Loved the social atmosphere, friendly staff, and lots of activities. Will absolutely stay here again my next time in San Juan!

go to the location and someone else’s shoes/clothes were on my bed that clearly stated my name. Got to the location at 1am and only took 1 minute before deciding not to stay and finding somewhere else .

The room looked like a jail cell I walked in and walked out out when I asked for a refund they refused to give it back . I saw a roach on the floor and kitchen was outside with nets and flies swarming around . Then as I was waiting on my Uber outside a huge rat ran past my feet . Worst experience I ever experienced in my life

Overall, you get what you pay for. It was only about a 10-minute drive from the airport, a short walk to the beach and 2 areas to bar hop, and only about a 20-minute drive from old SJ, which was great as we did not have to Uber much. The discount on the El Yunque tour (highly recommend) was great as well. When we arrived, we were immediately helped and shown to our room, which was the single dorm. When inside, we noticed the AC did not work, and the only source of airflow was a fan that also turned on the light, meaning we could not have it on at night. Additionally, there was no blanket (only a top sheet), and for 2 guests we were only given one towel. The bathroom was so small we had to sit sideways on the toilet, and the hot water in the sink did not work. On the last night, the room became very humid and muggy to the point where water was dripping from the ceiling causing our floors, bed, bags, and clothes to be wet. I can't say I regret staying here because of how cheap it was, but I don't think I would stay here again.

Great value

It's not pretty, at all, but what it lacks in beauty it makes up for im charm. This is definitely a party hostel. There's a bar across the street so that's cool.

Room had A/C bed and private bathroom. There was water leaking in the bathroom was my biggest complaint. Views were nice from the roof and was close to everything. It was nice being able to interact with people from all over and I felt safe. It’s not a hotel but was better than my previous hostel. There’s a bar right across the street. Limited parking can get busy but wasn’t too bad. Bathroom was small and wasn’t the best but better than nothing. You want a better experience book a hotel but price could’ve been less. I’d say worth like $30-$45

Ok back packers hostel. I’ve staid at much nicer for $10 a night. Beds were ok shower was a little dirty. Sheets were clean floors were clean. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. Personally I’d try another hostel next time but nothing to complain about.

Comfy bed, good water pressure in shower, ac was nice and cold. Staff were extremely friendly. Everything was on point for $50 a night for a private room.

I liked the price.
I dislike the staff attitude, the rooms are way too crowded, and it's not in a very good neighborhood.

Just a really trashy hostel!

Kitchen is disgusting. Noise from morning to late night right outside the door by employees and other guests. Air conditioner had no working thermostat, so freezing or had to turn it off, then boiling.

great place to stay with a community local vibe. staff is friendly and helpful. the staff even helped with shuttle service after expedia couldn't solve it. i also liked when a staff member said "we treat our guests like family". I really felt and received that the whole visit.

I enjoyed my stay here. The bed was comfortable, room was clean and the staff was very courteous. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for an affordable place to crash for a night or two.

They were able to help us find street parking right in front, everyone there was very friendly, setting was perfect and walkable, and accommodations were just what we needed! Cool rooftop area with a good view.

It’s a FUN place to stay and I can’t emphasize “Fun” enough. It’s a really Sociable/Party atmosphere. The staff is amazing, professional, courteous and helpful. There’s a bar across the street with nightly parties that spill out onto the street so you might want to invest in some earplugs if you’re a light sleeper 😆

Lot of noise for the whole night even on a weekday. Get ear plugs if you want to sleep well. No water bottles, body wash, shampoo, blankets provided

Noisy!
Owners of this place run a bar across the street and it was a loud party til sunrise.
Dirty all around.
Linens has many stains.
Kitchen area was nice but only two of the burners worked and not very well.
Upper deck shared space was awesome but got kicked out just before sunset for some salsa dance they were charging money for.
Would not recommend if you actually want to sleep.

I regretted staying at this place for several reasons: Starting with the check in - no one was in the office, which was WIDE open with several guest bags in view to easily steal from someone off the streets. No one was there at 3pm for check-in, so we had to search the premise for them before finding them. The room was very dirty. We found dirty tissues under the bed, hairs all over the bathroom sink. The toilet was broken and rocked back and forth if you tried to sit on it to the point that you could fall off. I understand that it was a Saturday night, so noise levels will be high, which definitely happened until 5:30am the next morning. There are no quiet hours at this place. I am fine with the noise situation, but there is no excuse for the lack of general cleanliness and broken bathroom fixtures. I recommend you put together another $30 and stay at an airbnb if considering this place.

Avoid this if you actually want to take a shower and get some rest. I stayed at room 2C, unfortunately it is in such a terrible condition, dirty room with cockroach stains on the wall, used paper towels by the bed, stained and teared sheets with very old pillows, there was no window screen to stops mosquitos from coming in, hairs in the bathroom, the worst is the wobbly toilet that feels like it will tip over if I don't sit right.

A great hostel for those who like to party. It is safe but I would Uber in and out in the evening. Daytime strolls need to be smart.
0.5 / 5.0
Pretty awful place for abhostel, TBH. The flooring is falling apart, huge cracks between worn out flooring panels everywhere. Rooms were never cleaned. Bathroom had lots of mold. Zero security, no lock on the gate to get in. Everyone seemed to know the code to get into every room. Theft of food was common, whether you had your name on it or not. The hostel owner owns a bar across the street, and everyone in the hostel seemed to drink and party til 6 AM, during the week. No staff after 10 PM, so noise was bad.

This is horrible place to stay. I found lizards roaming around the room. Not so clean. There is a bar across the street where party goes on until 5 AM every night. Peoples come out of the street and make noise for the whole night that you won't be able to sleep at all. The area seems to be unsafe to move around after dark. This place seems to be the spot for backpackers, so unless you are a backpacker don't even think about booking this place. I booked this place through Expedia thinking that it might have done some kind of due diligence before listing this property in their system. Expedia should delist this place from its system.

The hostel was fine. The people there were fantastic. However, The bar is directly across a one lane street and there were 30 to 40 people between the bar and the deck of the hostel partying until seven and 8 o’clock in the morning. It was super loud (especially on the weekend but also during the week nights)
3.0 / 5.0
Very basic, but clean. Great location. Can be noisy as there is a lovely little , but popular, bar across the road. Safe.
Sadly the washing machines were outside my room and someone thought it appropriate to wash stuff at 3.30 am :(
