If you are looking for a nice relaxing and traditional Japanese stay away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities then this place is for you. Very tranquil and the staff went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. If you come you must try the plum wine! It was so delicious 😋.
Only problem was the location. I had thought it closer to Fujisan then it was, hour by cab 3 by rail.
4.3
Authentic atmosphere. Food was really great
There was a bad smell in the room (moldy), probably due to recent rains. Poor sleep due to lack of any noise isolation (paper thin walls).
4.3
Really lovely place in a quintessential Japanese temple town. Very caring staff, amazing food and a great zen garden + baths.
We loved it! Only slight thing to mention: we expected some of the activities to be included in the price rather than paid for extras (eg the bikes).
4.3
The overall furnishings were beautiful and staff very friendly and helpful, though disorganised. The food was divine.
Very dissappointed that we were put in tiny room opposite toilet. It was smelly from toilet and sensor light came on throughout the night. Highly commercial establishment, not in keeping with Buddist philosophy.

Delicious meals, truly enchanting place to stay. Staff super friendly, typical amazing Japanese hospitality and care. Loved it.
4.3

We ordered the dinner and breakfast and requested that it be vegan. What was provided was exceptional. The food was gourmet, with many smaller tasting dishes. We had more than enough food to satisfy us.

It's a full experience. The location makes the magic.
I think it was very expensive. But still nice.

I love this place, how they keep it, dinner and breakfast with the view of the garden and especially the chance to go to Kuonji in the morning by walk
Everything has been perfect

This journey took me to the mountains of Japan. The air was fresh, the views were out of this world, the temples are extraordinary, the service at my lodging was ‘wow’. I want to go back already. Thank you so much . Oh don’t ask for the cleanliness. Exceptional!!!!
Perfect

What didn’t we love? So wonderful to experience traditional accomodation and food delivered with such lovely customer service.

wonderful Japanese Ryokan, welcoming, we felt transported to the well-being that this place brings you for the onsen you can enter with tattoos and as a couple, because they put your name in a time slot and you are alone inside.

The staff were so friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed the optional activities ( note these were at extra cost ) We chose calligraphy.
The meals area was just beautiful with a view of the Japanese historic garden
This was my 16 year old sons favourite stay ( he enjoys culture and food )
We really enjoyed our stay. Mindful that this is a shared bathroom, but we were totally aware of this when we booked. If you dont have a car, there is a short walk into the main street on a steep slope.
There were some options for restaurants, but not many in the town and their opening hours were also limited.

If you want to live Japan (not only visit) it‘s a great way to do it by stying at the temple. The rooms are big, clean and fully japanese style. The food was great (but you must japanese food). Very nice garden and many E-bikes for rental right at the temple. We got one in the evening to use it at 6 am for the morning prayers.
If you want to see the Fuji I recommend other areas. From the top of Mt. Minobu you can only see the top of it. There is a bus for Tokyo Shinjuku (3 hours) but it arrived in Tokyo 2 hours later due to traffic jam, we only caught the lasr train for Narita by chance.

We had Dinner and the breakfast and it was wonderful. Everything was prepared with fresh ingredients of the region. It tasted great. We are vegans and everyone was very considerate. While eating you can watch the japanese garden in front of you. The location was great to wander around and to visit all the different kind of shrines. The atmosphere was so peaceful and quiet.
Sometimes you see some "guests" from the forest running around, even in your room. The staff provides bug repellent if you are not comfortable with it. For us, it was no problem. But you should no in before, that this temple lives in harmony with nature and this includes these things as well. ;)
4.3
Everyone is on their own, no evening gathering or something.
In the morning, you just go to the temple yourself, no guidance leading us there whatsoever.
Overall we expected an authentic experience but this was more a tourist trap.

The hospitality at Kakurinbo is amazing! The staff is beyond accommodating in this beautiful old house and temple. They went out of their way to make sure that we were comfortable and happy.

Quiet setting in a small town, perfect stay after 4 nights in Tokyo. We stayed in two different rooms during our stay (if you can afford it, book above the basic room). We also booked to include breakfast and dinner - and definitely recommend it. Meals are at a set time in the dining room (which looks out to the gardens and pond), and the food was beautifully presented, always plenty and excellent! We had read about the morning prayers (summer at 5.30am) at the nearby Kuonji Temple - and were pleased we made the effort! Huge drums, chanting, the prayers and just the whole ceremony was amazing. You are encouraged to go up and offer a prayer (take coins for a donation), and a staff member is there to help you through what to do.
Kakurinbo also offers yoga, calligraphy, tea ceremonies etc.
We hired bikes and set off to the surrounding areas - which was stunning.
Minobu town is quite small (mainly shops selling Buddhist items), with a few restaurants.
From the train station you can catch the bus to Minobu town, but the walk to Kakurinbo is up hill and really steep at the end! We caught a cab from the train station (2,000 yen) as we had luggage.
This is a wonderful stay, highly recommend it!

very nice place. friendly staff and nice food.

Staff of Kakurinbo is very friendly and accomodating. Our six year old felt very welcome and everything was done to make us feel welcome. The location is breathtaking, and many activities are offered, but if you just want to unwind, no worries, you can do that as well. Food is amazing (especially as a vegetarian in Japan). Would love to come back!

Everything was great! The dinner was excellent, the room was big, with AC, and with a beautiful view.
Everyone was very nice.
Nothing to dislike.

Our expectations from this stay were far exceeded in spite of our curiosity for our very first experience in a temple lodging. After a week in Tokyo, we quickly adapted to Japanese politeness, but here, in the Temple, we really felt as a part of a family. We felt kind of blessed in this magic place, not only with the Temple, but also in the surroundings: the magnificent garden and hundred-years-old cedar forests embracing this holy place. At the dawn, we were invited to a God's service to another Temple in proximity – Kuon-ji with Buddhist chants and prayers. The hosts of Kakurinbo prepared delicious dinners and breakfasts: they presented new and sometimes unusual meals for us. They were also very flexible with our changing plans and prepared yummy onigiri for our trip instead of breakfast. We were also offered some activities during our one week stay: copying sutra (calligraphy), morning prayers in Kuon-ji, morning yoga, excursion in a paper making manufactory, making Buddhist bead bracelet, tea ceremony, trying on wedding kimonos and kintsugi. There was a small festival of the Temple for guests which we enjoyed. The hosts also helped us a lot when picking us up at the train station in the evening when taxis were not available. The whole place of Minobu was calm and friendly with a few shops and Zencho café (run by the proprietors of the Temple lodging) offering delicious Japanese and European food. The Temple is a great starting point for short mountain hikes: you can take a cable car to the Minobu mountain and walk down through cedar forests full of ancient shrines. In a clear day, you can observe Mt.Fuji from the top of Mt.Minobu. The stay in the Kakurinbo Temple refreshed our body and soul. Even a month later, our experiences feel as if we were still there and we would be happy to return one day.

Lovely location
Too touristy and trying to charge for things already paid for or claimed as free on webpage

The staff were amazing. The food was incredible. The scenery was exactly what we were looking for. It was quiet and serene.
Cold water was in short supply.

Kakurinbo was a really special experience. The hosts were extremely helpful and passionate about providing the best possible stay for us guests. Kakurinbo was just the sweetest village ever. The dinner and breakfast were surprisngly very delicious and generous vegan food :)
Their English was a bit weak but that is part of the small Japanese village experience!!! The village is also a bit in the middle of nowhere, but for me that was exactly what I wanted.

The stuff is friendly, the facility is clean and beautiful. It's a bit far from Minobu station, but you can travel here from Shinjuku Bus terminal or on local bus from Minobu station, so I can't say it's a problem. Moreover, it's located near Minobu mountain and several temples, which is very convenient.
I'm not saying this as reproach to Kakurinbo - the stay here was amazing - more like an advice. It would be good to give visitors a timer or use something else to notify about the time in onsen. During my stay, there was a man, who was always before me into onsen and was late to leave for 15-20 minutes, so I had only 15-10 minutes to be in onsen myself.
