The rooms and pools are beautiful, and the property is near the area’s best beaches. We appreciated that the property provided sunscreen and bug spray. The staff are all very friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had a good experience while we were staying at the property. We enjoyed a very good wine dinner at Arbol restaurant, and we enjoyed the drinks we ordered at poolside bars.
We had a terrible experience at the spa. Out of the four guests in our party, only one of us enjoyed the massage. All four of us agreed the massage table head cradles were extremely uncomfortable. It seemed like three of our therapists were still training, and the massages were very expensive. There was no relaxation room, and showers were only available in some rooms. We get massages often and have never experienced such a bad massage, even at cheap shopping mall places.
We didn’t enjoy any of our breakfasts at the property. We kept ordering different things hoping something would be good, but we never found anything we liked. I recommend going off the property for breakfast.
Staff were very friendly and attentive once we arrived, but the property was very slow to respond to emails and messages before we arrived. It sometimes took 1 week to get a response. We were also given incorrect information about one of our tours we booked through the property. Communication needs to be improved.

Perfect! By far the best hotel we stayed at in Costa Rica. There are wild animals (sloths, monkeys, toucan,..) on the hotel property and we loved it!
Spacious rooms and nice staff. The private beach that you can reach by golf cart is a big plus

Over-priced, we've been traveling for 18 days and stayed only in 5 stars or boutique hotels. They all offered nice mini bar treats for free.. here, we were charged 8$ for a tea bag ..

The attention to detail shown in the room design is excellent. The bed, and all the other furnishings, were super comfortable. We picked a room with an Ocean View and it did not disappoint as the view was amazing and the terrace was huge and could easily fit a number of persons. Lastly, the service was very good as all the staff are very friendly and attentive. Also, the WiFi here was very good as it worked pretty much everywhere on the property.
The only complaint I have is that I wished they had a little shop of some sort on property that sold snacks, fruit, local coffee, souvenirs, etc. Maybe its in the works, but if not they should consider something as sometimes

We love the staff especially Chris our waiter. He was the best waiter and so kind throughout our stay.

The overall property and the service
The second pool was undergoing construction. This impacted my stay negatively as that pool was my main attraction.

The surroundings are what really make this place special. If you love wildlife you will love it here, it is all around you. You feel immersed in a mini jungle with all the trees and flowers. The staff are also exceptional and made us feel welcomed straight away. The staff work really hard from the cleaners, bar staff, kitchen, waiters and drivers to make your stay perfect. The food here is also exceptional, as are the smoothies and cocktails.
We didn't stay long enough!

Amazing setting with plenty of wildlife all around. Rooms were large and ours had a scenic view of the sea.
Limited seating around the two pools. Makanda is at the luxury end and so has prices to match.

This hotel is well worth the expense just to enjoy the feeling of being nestled inside a tropical jungle with monkeys as your regular breakfast companions!
The architecture is incredible and perfectly complements the jaw dropping views through the dense jungle out to the private beach.
The resort clings to a fairly steep hill-side and subtly blends into the jungle foliage. A series of small roads connect the various buildings and a number of motorized golfcarts are available at a few minutes notice to run you anywhere you want to go.
The pool bar serves excellent cocktails and had a live DJ during happy hour which was quite magical, listening to music, sipping cocktails in the infinity pool and heated jacuzzi, and gazing out over the sea as the sun set!
We ate in the restaurant one evening and it was good although expensive. We were a little disappointed that at $700 per night for our room that a cooked breakfast was not included in the room rate. It seemed petty to charge extra however the complimentary fresh fruit platter, juice and coffee were very nice and enough for us on most days.
Both the freshwater and salt water pools provided cold drinking water infused with tropical fruits, and complementary sunscreen and mosquito repellent for guests which was a nice touch, although surprisingly we did not find as many mosquitos as we had expected.
We booked a couples spa treatment one afternoon (the Signature Shanti package) which was incredible. We had the whole spa and private terrace to ourselves and for the first hour sipped on prosecco whilst enjoying the jacuzzi and sauna, then lounged in our robes on this beautiful private terrace suspended over the jungle. The spa treatments were excellent and the masseuses were definitely five-star quality.
The level of maintenance and cleanliness of the resort was not perfect and this was the only area where the hotel needs take care they ensure that they maintain their exclusive status.
Maintenance and cleanliness were not quite up to par.

The hotel complex is beautiful with great views if you pay for it. I've booked one of the villas and when I arrived a dream come true.
The system how they serve breakfast is a little wired. The range of dishes you would have to pay as ordered is way to small.

the staff was warm and friendly as well as helpful and knowledgeable. the pools and spa were beautiful. the view was breathtaking. The animals on the property were fun to watch. we saw sloths, three different species of monkeys, toucans, and other native wildlife. the grounds are a perfect balance of natural yet maintained.
I wish there were other options for dinner. there was an issue with the tile in our bathroom seeping water up through the grout.
