Local Activities
Moreton Island "The Gem of South East Queensland" is one of the best experiences that Australia has to offer. One of Australia's largest sand islands, making Moreton Island perfect for that much needed getaway. Moreton is almost completely sand with no roads, so a 4wd is needed past the landing points. Just across the bay from civilisation, Moreton is quickly being discovered as an unspoilt paradise for people wanting to relax and enjoy nature.
The house is only a minute walk to the bayside of the island, with calm water for children to play. The surfside is a 5 minute beach drive. A must to experience the most pristine beaches in SouthEast Queensland.
A short drive north, for the more energetic, climb the sand dunes, try sand tobogganing or snorkelling at the Tangalooma Wrecks.

It's a great getaway. We loved the big kitchen and the outdoor area which suited our big group perfectly. This was the first time for us staying at Kooringal right next-door to the Gutter bar. Very convenient and fun. On that side of Moreton Island though you are bound by the tides, and you will have to plan your daytrips carefully.
We did have an issue with the bore water being very smelly and brown. The smell was definitely not for the faint hearted. There was no rainwater left. We stayed during peak season though, so this could all have been used by previous large groups during the Christmas period and there hasn't been a lot of rainfall during this holiday either. We might've just been unlucky. Overall great place

Having stayed at this property 5 hrs ago we were excited to return.Completely alarmed at the decline
The start to our holiday looked promising with an early entry. We were told the thatched roof was leaking & the owners couldn’t get repairs as there were no tradesmen available & that usual cleaners were unavailable. We were a little concerned.
Upon entry we found a filthy kitchen, holes in thatched roof as stated, but the general condition of the home had sadly declined dreadfully. We called the owners immediately after our brief inspection & asked them to come back. We pointed out the frying pan full of fat left in the kitchen draw, the filthy oven & kitchen bench. The uncleaned fridge & the cutting boards that should have been thrown out years ago. One of the owners became agitated & at one point aggressive. We were asked what would resolve the problem. We said we were willing to do another clean and stay provided the cleaning fee was waived and we negotiated 1 free night out of our 5 night stay.
Three of of us started cleaning, it took us almost 3 hrs. A terrible start to our holiday:-(
Over the course of our stay:
It rained and water leaked in next to the bed.
The dishwasher was disgusting & everything was hand washed for 2 days.
Water ran all over the bathroom floor during showering which pooled making it extremely dangerous, needing mopping after every use.
Fly screens full of holes in most rooms.
To open the windows you had to open & close them from outside as the screens were so tight you could not get to the latches.
The grease trap was overflowing with dirty water into the garden & it stunk after washing up or showering.
The curtains were full of mould.
Couches inside & out filthy.
The last straw was waking up with a cockroach under a pillow!!
OMG ... the list goes on & on.
This is so sad as our first stay was truly amazing. Hence our return.
We left the place having cleaned the bbq again (the owners gurneyed it upon our request as it was caked in built up grease).
Scrubbed the entire kitchen bench
Disinfected all the light switches, door handles & surfaces throughout the house
Completely cleaned & serviced the dishwasher
Wiped down all the outdoor furniture
Put down some cockroach baits
Readjusted the shower head to minimise the water flowing out of the shower.
We’re sure with a couple of weeks of deep cleaning, repairs & maintenance & some new soft furnishings & cutting boards this property can be restored to how it was when we visited 5 years ago ..which was perfect.
TLC is urgently needed!

Awesome Place
We have been staying now every year for a while for a blokes only week of fishing & relaxation, there can be some years 6 of us, some only 2 of us but is comfortable either way as is big & roomy & can get away from each other if necessary, the front Bali style hut with fireplace is great for an afternoon drink or nap & the Gutter Bar is within walking distance & only a sort 20 odd minute drive to the Eastern Beach, i will be going back sometime soon with my family as is fantastic for either a blokes week or a family vacation, would recommend The Island Retreat to anyone wanting a great place to stay & relax on Moreton UIsland.

Bali in Kooringal
With a large group we loved the scale of this home. We spent a lot of time in the comfy outdoor Bali style deck area relaxing together. You will find a huge selection of DVD’s to watch, books to read and even board games. We will certainly be returning to this lovely, well equipped holiday home!

Beach shack
We enjoyed our stay at the Retreat. The property is quirky and fits perfectly in it surrounds. There is plenty of room for large family groups to chill out without being on top of each other. The house has some minor maintenance issues that could easily have been fixed. The house needs a thorough clean, especially in the kitchen. We ran out of electricity several nights even though we were extremely careful of power usage And although days were sunny, we had to run the generator. Page was a very helpful host and replied promptly to my questions. I would certainly book the Retreat again providing the maintenance issues and cleaning were improved.

Moreton getaway
The place was great but was lacking a few things, thought towels would be supplied as part of linen. Few lights were blown, few taps were faulty, power was lacking and could have down with a microwave and toaster.. overall place was cool, funky, loved the fireplace outside.

Island Retreat was a great place to stay. Plenty of space for us all. The design and architecture was interesting as well as comfortable. We enjoyed our stay.

Great part of the world
Great place to relax and unwind. The current drought is causing issues with water supply so we couldn't wash the salt off the vehicles but is understandable. The house is great and obviously built by people who intended to live there long term. Would definitely recommend and go back 👍

Island Paradise
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kooringal Island Retreat and can't wait to go back soon. The property is very well equipped with a huge kitchen and a wonderful deck to relax and enjoy a BBQ. The location is perfect too - we enjoyed strolling down to the gutter bar for a drink and bite to eat. Looking forward to our next stay.

Special house in a special place!
We loved the style of the house and the quite location in kooringal away from the tangalooma masses. We spent two great days here, with lots of nice food from Gutter Bar.

What a beautiful place to stay, definitely the best spot on the island. Most beautifully furnished and very comfortable, loved every minute :-)

Disappointed in property.
Property was very disappointing for us . It has insufficient fans in house ! The bunkhouse is as hot as a sauna and could not be slept in! The parents retreat out back fan was moving as slow as a snail and could not be slept in , and the bathroom in parents retreat is a absolute breeding ground for mosquitoes. Therefore four our my family members had to sleep on mattresses on kitchen floor where there was a fan . We ran out of gas at 9pm on Christmas night . When advertising this property you should really include a copy of the house rules booklet too so people are aware of the do,s and don’t when a house is run on solar power. It was not a enjoyable experience.

Great house , space for everyone .
We loved the Island Retreat and already planning to go back . Very stylish interiors with comfy beds ! The layout of the house is great and we particularly loved the outdoor area . The solar power and tank water really threw us at first (and we got worried we would run out of power and water... but didn’t) Kitchen had everything we needed and more . A few more insect screens in the bunk room would be great as the midgies and sandflies are hungry and plentiful. The house is well placed and a short walk from the beach. Overall a great place to entertain and relax .

Island Retreat is a fantastic place to base yourself for a trip to beautiful Moreton Island. The house has been tastefully restored with every modern convenience and caters comfortably for families of up to 8. It has a sense of character that you will immediately fall in love with. The massive and private deck is something really special with vaulted thatched roof, comfortable day beds and the spectacular open fireplace. Once you arrive you will not want to leave. I'd also recommend taking sand toboggan boards and visiting the nearby big sandhills. This accommodation is a must for anyone with access to a four wheel drive.
