It was perfect. Close to everything I wanted to do.

Clean, friendly, convenient, quiet. Free coffee (though it was empty at 5:30a, which is a no-no!) and a wine tasting happy hour. Great place!

Charming old historic building and great location. Right in the middle of Pearl District shopping and restaurants.

I cannot recommend the Mark Spencer Hotel in downtown Portland highly enough. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was greeted by the warm and welcoming staff who made me feel right at home. Their exceptional hospitality truly set the tone for my entire stay.
The location of this hotel is absolutely perfect. Situated in the heart of downtown Portland, it is within walking distance of incredible dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Whether exploring the Pearl District, browsing Powell’s Books, or enjoying one of the many fantastic nearby restaurants, everything is conveniently close.
What truly sets the Mark Spencer apart is the attentiveness of the staff. During my visit, I accidentally left an expensive electronic device in my room. I was frantic, but the staff quickly put me at ease. Not only did they locate the item, but they also went above and beyond to ensure its safe return. Their dedication to their guests is exceptional.
Another highlight is the coffee. The hotel offers complimentary coffee around the clock, and it is not just any coffee it is brewed fresh from their onsite roastery. The rich, bold flavor made every cup a delight and provided the perfect pick-me-up for exploring the city.
The hotel itself is stunning. Every detail is beautifully curated, with tasteful decor and art that reflects Portland’s unique charm. The common spaces and rooms are thoughtfully designed, combining elegance and comfort seamlessly. The art displayed throughout

Pros
- Convenient location. Great shops and restaurants nearby.
- Comparable onsite garage parking fees
- Good size room for the suite we booked with a kitchen
- Good customer service during one night where I phoned the front desk about an issue
Cons
- The place is a bit dated for my liking
- Shower took quite some time for the water to heat up
- Day 4 (Sat) of our stay. Upon our return in the afternoon, the room reeked of a sewage smell. We instantly opened the windows and went down to the lobby to notify the front desk immediately and they caught an attitude with my husband when he asked if they needed anything else from us while we stood there waiting for a response. They did inform us that all the rooms were booked and we were waiting on them to tell us they would send maintenance to check on it. But we just stood there in silence while they were checking for available rooms (even though they just said they were fully booked). Instead, I asked if they can send someone to at least check it out while we’re gone. They said yes. But the whole interaction was annoying af. Came back and a different rep told us they sent someone to check it but couldn’t provide me any updates as they just started their shift but the hotel did put a room on hold for us just in case the smell didn’t go away. Luckily it did. This whole experience was off putting as I’ve never experienced sewage smell in a hotel room and I travel a lot for work and leisure.

If you’re headed to Portland and craving a place with soul, check into the Mark Spencer Hotel. This isn’t your cookie-cutter spot. Nestled in the heart of the Pearl District, it’s been around since 1907 and wears the years well—like an old friend who’s got a few stories and isn’t afraid to share them. The place exudes an eclectic charm, a fitting vibe for a city that prides itself on being just left of center.
We were in town to catch a show at the Moda Center, and the Mark Spencer turned out to be the ideal basecamp. It’s steps away from Powell’s City of Books, a cathedral of literature so vast you could lose yourself for hours. Around the corner, some of Portland’s best food spots await, from cozy coffee shops to bustling breweries. It’s a hotel for travelers who want to feel Portland’s pulse up close.
Our corner room was big, comfortable, and refreshingly authentic. None of that minimalist decor nonsense you find in ‘hip’ hotels—this place actually has character. And while the parking garage might test your skills with its tight spaces, it adds a dash of challenge, making every exit and entry a small victory. For a taste of true Portland, forget the chains and stay here. You’ll feel like you’ve earned your spot at the table, just as Portland would want it

My wife and I enjoyed staying at the Mark Spencer. It was kinda quirky. The shower had a half door which aim still trying to figure out. The guest parking in the garage was interesting to say the least. If you have a car bigger than a matchbox, you need to be patient getting in and out of parking spots. They’re quite small. The room was clean which is most important. The beds are comfortable but squishy, probably ready to be upgraded. Overall it suited out needs, and we’d stay there again.

The staff at this hotel were incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. The rooms were immaculate and very comfortable. The Mark Spencer has the perfect blend of historic charm and modern facilities. The room amenities were nicely done, spacious, and rooms were very comfortable. The hotel was in a prime location, close to all the major attractions.
We were two blocks from Powell’s book store, around the corner from Cheryl’s on 12th (highly recommend for breakfast), and in any direction we found shopping of all kinds to fit any style. I am horrible at names but he young lady who checked us in and out was very pleasant and helpful. If you are not use to parking in Portland, it’s challenging. Our first night we had a bit of a hiccup at the air port so we got to the hotel later than planned and the hotel parking was full. She gave a list of places the hotel recommended but let us know to check in the morning for availability in the hotel space. Again, let me stress…. Parking in Portland will make you say words you didn’t even know you knew and make you wish you’d chosen the extra insurance on your rental car. But once you maneuver your way into a spot, thank whatever deity or Mother Earth you choose for not letting you destroy your (or another’s) vehicle, then everything you need is walkable.

Big room (premier king) with all you could need and more. Staff was friendly, access to a gated garage was excellent, close to many restaurants and stores. Some homeless around but nothing different than any other downtown. Would stay here again for sure

Paid for parking, car was broken into despite appearing to have a guy outside who watched the parking lot. Hotel refused responsibility (they have signs all over their parking lot, but I would assume that with a guy watching and charging for exclusive parking, it was just a formality).
Fridge didn't work. The TV only worked half the time (would shut itself off every twenty minutes or so) No door on the shower. Lots of banging noises above our room.
Very nice staff and the building is very cool. But my time wasn't great, for the price. I'm pretty used to rolling the dice on all the things listed above, but I dropped extra money this time in order to avoid worrying and treat a friend and I. Kinda bummed, and out 350 bucks for a car window.

It would be helpful if the hotel had a ramp to roll the luggage in and out if the building.
