We stayed a week Dec 2023 and the house, host, and Quepos were wonderful! Pictures are accurate. The house is in the jungle treetops, with squirrel monkeys, capuchins, iguanas, and beautiful birds, yet only a 5-10 minute walk (down a steep hill) to shops/restaurants. If you are expecting a pristine, antiseptic, hotel experience, this is not your place. But if you want a more authentic experience that incorporates the diverse wildlife and culture of this lovely country, close to the Manuel Antonio Nat'l Park and fantastic beaches, this house/location are the way to go. The private waterfall, near the house, is totally worth it, despite being an extremely difficult hike up a steep hill and through dense jungle. We felt very safe at the house and everywhere we went. No regrets and would book here again! Pros: Darien, the host, is knowledgeable, helpful and so friendly. He responds quickly to questions/concerns. The house is great for big family/friend groups - 7 bedrooms, each with air cond and a bathroom, offer privacy and space, while the large decks offer room for big groups to gather. Cons: While this is a house, we joked we were “glamping”. It is not airtight. Expect a few bugs and geckos. On a rainy day the family room was very tight for 11 of us, with not enough comfortable seating and no AC. However with the doors open there is a nice cross breeze. Overall, for a large group looking to experience it all, this is it! Darien will make your trip stress free and amazing!

I want to start by saying Darien was very helpful when we asked questions.
Unfortunately this house needs many improvements to continue charging high rental pricing.
Not sure why this is called a waterfall Villa. There is a waterfall 1.10 miles from the house up a very steep hill. There is not a waterfall in viewing area of the house. To get to the waterfall you need to supply better directions. It was not that easy to find.
You must add air conditioning to the main living area. It was impossible to cool down the area to enjoy ourselves with the humidity. Especially during meals.
You need more seating inside. We had to gather chairs from other areas and bring wooden table inside from deck so we had a place to eat. It wasn’t possible to eat outside with all the bugs. There was just 9 of us staying.
You need to inform the guests how to handle trash. If you are not going to supply extra trash bags you need to let your guests know this day 1. We had almost all of our dinners at the house and had a lot of trash to deal with.
Not all the doors and windows shut tight so you had to deal with bugs inside.
The kitchen needs a lot of improvements with more cooking utensils/pots etc. offered. Very limited.
You need to supply more towels or make it clear people should bring some. With no washer or dryer and the humid temperatures it was impossible to dry towels.
The bench to the table outside is broken and unsafe. Also a few stools/chairs are broken.

Due to the weather it was difficult to spend time in common area, there was no AC in the ground floor and property was really old. However, i loved the communication by the property manager.

Darien was great. Very helpful and always in agreeable. We stay in this area each year for tournaments. This house is very affordable and has tons of room for the crew and large area to eat together. Kitchen was well equipped. Good water pressure and nice hot water. Ac worked great in the rooms. When you open windows in common areas there was a nice cross breeze

Very badly managed. Many things were not working and house full of bugs and dirty.
We rented the whole place for our party of 14 people. There was not enough furnitures or room for our party to congregate. The place is very poorly managed: broken window that let flying insects come in, shower does not work, one room leaked and had buckets to catch the leaks, doorknob to bathroom missing, a very small TV did not work. We had to swat the bugs that land on us constantly. House is full of aunts everywhere. There was no AC in the main Living area which made it extremely uncomfortable. The place was dirty and musty smell. Too many areas that was unsafe: stairs to go to the different unit have inadequate lighting, Many things did not work. There were many items that were listed on the websites were missing: microwave, dish washers, furnitures. The pictures on the website are misrepresented. Washers and dryer was not available to use as advertised. They charged for having clothes wash. I argued and was able to use one afternoon. The place was not ready for us when we arrived, no top sheets, blankets, coffee maker had mold and aunts that nested inside the coffee maker. We had a very bad experience and would absolutely not recommend this to anyone. For the price we paid it was very disappointing. I would rate it a zero if I could. Stay away.

Owner of property clearly does NOT value customer service!!!
This was the 2nd time I have taken a group to CR, but the 1st time communicating with an owner about the many headaches throughout the stay..and FWIW, the negative lasting impression from the trip, with respect to rental, is less about all the problems with the house and more to do with the owners inability to provide and inkling of customer service....it's sad. ***If you book through VRBO, the guarantee works only if you call VRBO IMMEDIATELY if you believe in any way the property is NOT what you expected, VRBO will ABSOLUTELY accommodate you that moment at no extra cost as well as compensation. Wait until you get home, and VRBO can do nothing. At that point, only the owner can help you...and offering a few free nights stay in the future at the same broken property, as well as a few more nights some other time in which I, or my group, could stay with him at the property is #CREEPY
Upon arrival, 1 of the bigger rooms that for 4 is completely under construction and was not available for the entire trip for the 15 who were on the trip..Additionally, a construction crew was at the property every day from 8 - 5 with a 4Runner, and 2 motorcycles parked in front of the main entrance. The daily promises of "the room is almost finished," was complete BS. Also, all power outlets in 2 other rooms didn't work, the washer did not work, under the kitchen sink leaked into the kitchen floor the entire stay, 1 of the 2 main sliding doors didn't work, and unbelievably, the pool looked as if it hadn't been cleaned, shocked, chlorine added, or whatever in a long, long time.NO ONE PUT MORE THAN THEIR FEET IN THAT CESSPOOL THE ENTIRE STAY!
In corresponding with the owner, he acknowledged what I have listed and was aware all of the problems prior to our arrival, and as I have stated previously, assumed the best way to rectify all of this was to invite us back to the same property. REALLY??!? At my company, mistakes far greater than this happen, and I can think of 20 other ways in order to remedy these circumstances; but after 3 or 4 emails, apparently his solution is radio silence.
I know the owner will write a "Response" to this review to defer responsibility, discredit facts, or something I see he does with any unhappy customers...but please understand, I have stayed at this exact house years ago w/o complication..I knew exactly what to expect..I didn't expect the owner's unprofessionalism.

I have to start by saying that I've never felt more relaxed anywhere before. I loved every aspect of my stay here from the beautiful view to the fresh water pool. The entire property is located in such a prime location right on the edge of town, just close enough to access everything you need yet far enough away to feel like you're living in the middle of a secluded rainforest. I will be recommending this to anyone coming to Manuel Antonio or Quepos and hope to visit again soon!

A great stay at Jacana Villa
There were a few minor issues with the house but the friendly staff quickly attended and corrected them. The views were amazing and we really enjoyed the monkeys visiting us on the balcony. The living room glass walls opened and it was awesome to watch the AFC play off from the swimming pool. The people in Costa Rica are very friendly and we felt extremely safe at all times. We will certainly revisit once again. Beautiful.

Paradise!
This property matched the website description and photos perfectly. The view of the ocean and forests is spectacular; the location is great –it’s a short walk into town where there are two grocery stores and plenty of restaurants and shops. The ocean is a bit of a walk, but definitively doable. Taxis to other locations are easy to obtain. There are plenty of activities to choose from (the sailboat/snorkeling cruise was my favorite; and if you go to the national forest park in Manuel Antonio, either take a tour or be sure to get a guide at the entrance to point out many sights and wildlife that you would otherwise miss. We enjoyed the balcony and the swimming pool daily. Overall, excellent value for the price, which I would highly recommend (and have recommended to friends). The property was clean and well-maintained; housekeeping came daily. Ana, the property manager is great - we had several occasions where we needed to contact her for questions and a couple of times we had issues with the house (like when one of the AC’s broke down and another time when we ran out of gas for the BBQ), and she addressed our needs promptly, satisfactorily, and in a friendly manner.

Poorly maintained. Not as advertised.
By any stretch of the imagination this is not ocean view. Location not convenient. But the biggest disappointment was the condition of the property. Showers, light fixtures, air conditioners, sliding doors didn't work. A sliding door was broken by the group renting before us. We were told it would be repaired immediately. It never was. This means we could not close up or lock up the property the entire time we were there. We disagree so vehemently with good reviews of this property that we are suspicious of their truthfulness. We have rented houses in a lot of locations and never had a worse experience with a property. Such a shame as the country and people were beautiful.

House Needs An Overhaul
I have to agree with reviewer Dani E. While the manager was attentive to our needs--but never actually showed up on the property--we had issues and had to ask for repairs to the stove, refrigerator and air conditioners during our 6 day stay. The shower on the main floor had no water, the shower in the room above the garage had no hot water and broken bathroom lighting. We booked the cleaners every day, and while they did clean up the daily bugs (Costa Rica is buggy) there were bugs and spider webs inside the dish cabinets, and the garbage can was crawling with ants. One of the back glass doors was cracked from side to side so we were afraid of opening it, a curtain rod in the kitchen was falling down, the barbecue is very dirty, we had mismatched sheets and ratty towels, there was a derelict stove in the car port and the laundry room is filthy (clearly intended not to be seen by guests). The positives: The pool was great. We liked the view, the location, the gate staff of Manuel Antonio Estates, and it was always easy to get a cab to the house. We even liked walking the hills to and back to town. Everyone in town seems to know it Villa Jacana, but in it's current state this is more of a home for college students than for families with children or for adults looking for a worry-free vacation. This house may have been loved, but it is time for an overhaul.

looks can be deceiving
We arrived late and were immediately dissapointed. We settled into our rooms and after waking the next day decided it was not as bad as initially thought but not the 5 star the reviews gave it. The views are breath taking, the pool was a life saver for the kids and the local spa was a nice treat. On the downside...the beds are beyond uncomfortable, sheets do not fit and slide off on every move and my husband I ended up with a horrible rash (I'm praying it was not from bed bugs) We had several issues and we let the property manager know each time. Some were resolved and some were not. I believe the photos in the listing are not an accurate depiction of the home. You should make people aware that the main living space is only 2 rooms and the other rooms are not connected. For the weekly price paid the home should have been much cleaner and maintained better. A major deep cleaning of the home is needed. We have a friend that lives in town and he even said for the price we paid we could have found something much nicer and cleaner. With that said, we will not recommend this home nor stay there on our next trip to Manuel Antonio.

Amazing house in the perfect spot
This house was amazing. It fit 8 couples comfortably and was in the perfect village with easy access to great beach spots. When the rain would come the pool was the perfect place to be, located on the balcony so with the most incredible view.
We will most definitely return!

The villa was perfect for our group.
We came to Happy Jacana with a large group, and it was perfect for us. The villa was well taken care of, the owner and property manager were both very helpful and easy to get ahold of, and the views were amazing! We felt safe and comfortable and almost had a hard time leaving every day to go to the beach. I would go again for sure!

Absolutely gorgeous and tranquil.
All I could say when I walked in was "WOW! THIS IS SO GORGEOUS!" One unique aspect of the property is that it's not one large house; instead, several of the rooms are secluded and are in their own section outside of the main house. It is five stories tall with several balconies and a stunning pool that overlooks the town of Quepos. The sunsets were my favorite part as you're looking off the main balcony.. BREATHTAKING!! I loved how the glass walls were actually huge sliding doors and you could open up the entire living room and kitchen to feel the fresh breeze while watching wild life in the trees surrounding you. Also, you can walk from the house onto the main street and jump on the bus for a dollar or two and ride it a couple minutes into Manuel Antonio. Too many great things to say about this place!! Great for large groups looking for a relaxing and luxurious holiday. Highly suggest staying here!!

Exceeded ALL expectations. Your own private resort
I stayed Happy Jacana in Manuel Antonio Estates with a group of 14 friends (7 couples) from December 29th through January 5th, and we were incredibly impressed by the beauty of Happy Jacana, the convenient location, and the amazing staff at Manuel Antonio Estates. The pictures do not do the house justice... it really feels like your own private resort/compound. Each bedroom has plenty of space and character, each with its own private bathroom. The main living areas, kitchen, pool, and balcony overlook the town, bay, and jungle, and the house is walking distance to Quepos town for nightlife, groceries, etc. Every afternoon, around 4 or 5 PM, a group of little monkeys would gather in the trees around the house and if we left fruit on the balcony/patio they would jump over to eat and play... seriously! The staff at Manuel Antonio Estates were by far the most attentive and helpful resort staff I have ever experienced. Luis and Dorit, two of the managers, arranged for everything we needed during our stay, including an amazing chef, transportation to activities, the beaches, parks, restaurants, etc, and our restaurant reservations the nights we ate out. Luis came to the house every morning when the housekeepers arrived to make sure everything was satisfactory and to make various reservations for us that day. For our last day in Costa Rica and at Happy Jacana, Luis arranged for a 60 foot catamaran yacht to take us out for the afternoon... the boat trip was very reasonably priced (MUCH lower than through other sources online) and was the highlight of our trip... except for our time spent at Happy Jacana. Luis also arranged for chef Paul to cook incredible daily meals (breakfast, lunch/snacks, and dinner) using fresh local seafood, fruits, vegetables, and another ingredients. If you have Paul cook for you during your stay, be sure to ask him to make his famous hummus!
James, the owner, was also very easy to get in touch with and was very helpful with the myriad of questions I had prior to the trip. It's obvious that he cares deeply about the quality of Happy Jacana and his guests' experience there. The only negative experience was the reality of leaving Happy Jacana and Costa Rica, but my friends and I will surely be back. If you are considering Happy Jacana in Manuel Antonio Estates for your Costa Rican getaway, you will not be disappointed.

Happy Jacana is amazing
Happy Jacana was a treat to stay in. It's a safe location up on the hill and private. We had spider monkeys playing on the deck every day and what a view! James is legit and will make sure you're happy and comfortable in his home. We were treated to an amazing chef, Belen. He served us some amazing meals and also was very helpful! I'll stay again for sure!

My new favorite vacation destination!
The beautiful view and serene environment are like no where else. Perfect for a vacation getaway, exactly what I was looking for. I don't know what was best, sitting on the patio where monkeys came to greet me, taking a dip in the pool to cool off, or the view from the floor to ceiling windows in every room. We utilized an add on service of having a private chef and it was phenomenal food at every meal! Also, take advantage of the spa nearby. All-in-all a MUST GO! Friendly service, easy transaction, very clean. I will be returning!

Gorgeous place to stay
This Villa is spectacular. We loved every moment of our vacation here. We really enjoyed the mountain views overlooking the beautiful forest. We loved swimming in the pool everyday. James and Shereen are fantastic hosts, they are super nice and helpful. They gave us so much info about the area and things to do. We can't wait to go back!
