About this house rental
Hale Lani means "House in the Sky" in Hawaiian. In ancient Hawaiian mythology, the Hale Lani was where the heavenly beings went to rest and rejuvenate, create and dream. That is our hope for each and every one of our guests.
Hale Lani is the upstairs portion of our home. It has its own private entrance so you can fully relax and enjoy your stay.
The Hale Lani rental includes:
- On-site parking
- Private keyless entry
- Wireless Internet
- Ultra High Definition TV with Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and more!
- Kitchen includes: fridge, microwave, toaster, oven, coffee maker, kettle, dishes and silverware
- Towels and linens are provided for all guests
There is also a shared laundry room with a washing machine and dryer. Laundry soap is provided free of charge.
We love Hilo and the authentic old-Hawaii vibe it breathes. Plantation era houses were built in the 1930’s and while ours has been lovingly maintained and updated, a few houses in our neighborhood need a little TLC. If you are looking for adventure, real Hawaiian experiences, fun new journeys to amazing destinations at a budget price, then this is the perfect place for you! As our house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, we ask our guests to show the aloha spirit to those around them by keeping noise levels to a minimum and by respecting Hawaiian culture. There may be other guests in the downstairs portion of our home, so we ask each of our guests to practice aloha and respect the privacy of each space. No smoking is allowed in or around our home.
Hilo is authentic Hawaii. Beaches (black sand/rocky beaches), shopping, great restaurants, waterfalls and hiking are all within a few minutes drive from Hale Lani. You can also access helicopter and boat tours in various spots around Hilo. If you have a car, you can reach Volcanoes National Park to the south or Mauna Kea to the northwest in about an hour. A massive mall and shopping center are just around the corner from us - you can walk there it is so close! We think our place is the perfect spot to Stay, Play and enjoy Aloha!
Our Hawaii Transient Excise Tax number is: TA-210-587-7504-01

Cute little 2 bedroom, perfect for two couples. We even had a visit from the gecko! Great location for our day trips. One minor glitch: with 2 schools nearby the traffic can get heavy around at the end of the school day, so plan accordingly.

Lovely place in Hilo
Group of friends stayed at this property for a week and had a great time. It was the perfect size and had everything we needed.

Wouldn’t be my first choice
A number of things to be aware of. (1) The unit does not have A/C. As a result, barking dogs will keep you up all night, and the roosters will have you up early. (2) The unit needs some significant attention. Worn, dirty carpets need to be replaced, there were no dressers or drawer space to unpack, and the night stands were simply crates that had been screwed to the walls. Oh, did I mention the bullet holes in the windows?!
The kitchen was reasonably stocked, and the location is great if your plans involve lots of activities on the Hilo side of the island.

Wonderful Hilo Getaway!
We loved our stay here! The house felt really welcoming and warm. It was close to all of the incredible adventures we had planned, and Shauna was such a great host! She checked in on us and even recommended a great place to get ice cream for the kids. You won’t regret your stay here!

Nice Location
The property was relaxing, clean, and has good location. Provided ample comfort after long days outdoors.

Location great, no local news service on TV, downstairs renters were loud. If had a/c; noise may not be a problem cause all windows would be closed. Even when other renters were inside, could still hear conversations 🙁

Great stay in Hilo
Nice central location. Very thoughtful and complete amenities provided throughout.
There are ear plugs provided which we found out later why... the roosters! We found it amusing and since we stayed 2 nights, not a big deal.
Great suggestions for things to do and places to eat. We followed quite a few and had a great time!
One note, no AC in the unit. Hot during the day time but tolerable since they have nice fans throughout the house and we were out most of the day. House cooled down in the evening nicely.

Great accommodation - lovely home!
We were two couples in Hilo for a few days and enjoyed our stay at StayPlayAloha! It has been thoughtfully done with all your needs met. The house is in a residential setting, but close to a big KTA grocery store so you can get what you need there. The kitchen and bathrooms have nice new supplies (towels, dishes etc). It met our needs very well. The owners were quick to respond to a question we had and it's obvious they want to provide you with a great home base for your time in Hilo.

Great Place for Home Base
My mother and I stayed at this house for a week and we loved it. It was in a great location to serve as a home base for exploring the big island; not far from downtown Hilo, about a 5 minute drive, but on the outskirts of town so that it was easy to get to other places. This is in the shopping area of town, so there are multiple grocery stores and food options close by. I liked that it was down a dead end street and not in a housing development.
The house itself was great! It was clean, comfortable, and spacious. The kitchen was well outfitted with pots, pans, and dishes that looked new. The pantry only provided the very basics (salt, pepper, and flour) though. The beds and pillows were comfortable and the bathrooms were well outfitted too. I liked the lanai the most though... the backyard of this property backs to a luscious green belt, which is what the lanai looks out to, with a peekaboo view of the summit of Mona Kea and the observatories. We stayed in January so the green belt was just very green, but I'm sure during spring and summer there are many flowers and lovely aromas! It was a pleasant view and a nice place to hang out in the evening... except for the mosquitos! Bring bug spray if you're prone to mosquitos- it's not a fault of the house though, since they're everywhere in Hawaii.
Also, it is mentioned in the listing but be prepared for the wild roosters. They were very loud each day, and were constantly calling! Again though, not a problem of the property since we saw wild roosters all over the big island. Just bring ear plugs if you need them to sleep.
Finally, the homeowner Shauna was amazing! She was extremely responsive, usually replying to any inquiries I had within 15 minutes. I had none during my stay because everything went smoothly, but had a few questions prior to booking. Knowing that the owner is highly responsive is helpful for peace of mind in case there had been any problems.

Cute house with plenty of extras
This is a great apartment. It appears to be recently renovated/decorated and is really cute. I loved the porch out back with twinkle lights. The beds (including the sofa bed) are all very comfy and the kitchen and bathrooms are well supplied with everything you might need. The owners have done a great job putting together useful tourist information as well as all the information you’ll need for the apartment. Check-in/arrival and access to the apartment is all very easy and straight forward. Guests should be aware that this is not a resort, it’s a house in a typical neighbourhood so don’t be surprised if a rooster shows up....
