About this cottage rental
Stonegarden Cottage offers you a private retreat where you will enjoy your dream vacation on Saint John in the US Virgin Islands. Offering the privacy, comfort and views of a villa, this unique rental home beckons many of our loyal guests back year after year.
This beautiful St. John vacation rental offers a gorgeous island view and on-site nature trails, close proximity to pristine National Park Beaches and restaurants and shops of Coral Bay - the peaceful side of St. John. Enjoy the water and garden view from our NEWLY INSTALLED SPA and TIKI BAR! Simply warm up after a swim, or treat yourself to a relaxing and therapeutic soak in the spa's jets. The cottage was upgraded with all new windows & screens, bathrooms, flooring, decking, interior decor, and a new Lower Level bathroom & kitchenette! We have a new whole house UV filtration system to ensure that your water is sparkling clean and drinkable.
The cottage nestles within a shady, tropical forest, high up the steep slopes of St. John’s Bordeaux Mountain. At the foot of the mountain lies picturesque Coral Bay harbor; beyond unfolds a panorama of peninsulas, islands, beaches and glowing turquoise channels that run east as far as Virgin Gorda and the Anegada Passage. This is the view Islands Magazine chose as the top spot in the world to watch the sunrise of the new millennium.
Back-up Power: The island's power company has been struggling since the hurricanes, and there are frequent island-wide outages, sometimes for several hours a day (the longest outages can last 24 hours). So, we installed two Tesla Powerwall back-up batteries for our solar panels which means you will should not even notice when the power goes out on island. There will be no noisy generator to spoil your peace and quiet. And the best thing is that you will not have to run around in the dark looking for flashlights, or refrain from using the water for doing dishes and showering for typical outages of 2-4 hours in length. You should have enough power to use the lights, water, fans, refrigeration, stove and oven, but you will still need to conserve power by not using hair dryers, microwaves, AC, etc.
Flexible Accommodations: Stonegarden Cottage consists of upper and lower levels, so you can book the Whole House for parties of 4-6, or just the Upper Level for parties of 2-4. We do not rent the Lower Level separately to ensure that you and your party will have maximum privacy, with only one family/party in the cottage at any given time. However, there is a very small chance that the owner might be using the lower level while you're there. Christmas and New Year's Weeks: Whole House only, 7 night minimum stay required.
NOTE: This listing is for the Upper Level (2 bedrooms, sleeps 4) and the rates correspond to that level only. You can rent the whole house (3 bedrooms, sleeps 6) by visiting VRBO listing # 1500675 where you'll find more detailed information, including an active availability calendar.
Please visit our website and Facebook page for more photos and information.
Upper Level: The fully-equipped, eat-in kitchen opens out onto the deck where you will dine or just relax while gazing at one of the most beautiful views in all the Caribbean, with an ever-changing light show of turquoise water and sundrenched islands.
The master bedroom with queen-size, four-poster bed and large, fully tiled bath has an expansive island view through a picture window. The enclosed Caribbean open-air garden shower blends traditional stonework with the tropical environment.
Off the living room, there is a 2nd bedroom (called the bunk room ) with twin-sized bunk bed and ample closet space. It has its own tiled bathroom - the open shower ceiling lets in the Caribbean sun and balmy breezes. This room is suitable for two children.
As an alternative to the bunk room, we offer a comfortable queen sized sofa bed with gel mattess in the living room. From here there is easy access to the bunk room bathroom.
Upper Level Rates: The rate quote you receive from VRBO is for 2 adults and 2 children under 18 only. The max number of guests in the Upper Level is 4, with the exception of adding one child age 6 or under. When you add a third child, you will be charged an additional $50 per night. We can accommodate one small child age 6 or under on a kids-sized air mattress that can be placed in the master bedroom. Additionally, you may substitute up to two adults for two children, however you will be charged an additional $50 per night per adult by the owner. We can accommodate up to two adults on our queen sized sofa bed. For parties of over 4 guests, please consider booking our whole house (which includes our lower level apartment). Rates vary according to the season and can be changed without notice.
The Upper Level is not air conditioned, simply because there is so much breeze at 500 ft above sea level, and with the house facing due east to catch the trade winds all year round, there is no need for energy consuming AC. The cottage has ceiling fans in every room to keep the air flowing, and create a comfortable environment.
Outside Amenities: Walkways from the front door lead you to our NEW HOT TUB/SPA, a spa deck for lounging and the stone paths and trails of Guavaberry Woods, where you'll enjoy bananas and papayas, tropical flowers and native shade trees. There's also plenty of trails to explore (see below).
Onsite Nature Trails: The best of St. John’s natural beauty and astonishing biodiversity lies on-site at your doorstep. A trellised archway of hanging tropical flowers greets you as you enter and walk down a short stone stairway to the front door. The large (2/3 acre) hillside property is an ecological wonderland that invites wandering -- beautiful hand-crafted stone paths and gravel trails on several different levels lead you through the lush hardwood foliage of Guavaberry Woods, where picturesque and unique ponds, a meditation garden, bridge and benches, plus gardens of orchids, frangipani, hibiscus, bougainvillea, citrus and tropical fruit trees delight the eye.
Cool Retreat: Steady trade-winds, an easterly view and the lush surrounding forest make Stonegarden Cottage a comfortable tropical getaway year-round -- cool, quiet and peaceful. After a day on blazing white sand beaches or out on the glittering sea, it is delightful to return up the mountain to your forest retreat, savor a frozen drink while enjoying the view or gaze into a lily pond while hearing the breeze rustle the treetops.

This lovely hillside cottage overlooks Coral Bay and the views are better in person than the pictures show. Absolutely charming home with a fully stocked kitchen and an assortment of beach chairs, towels etc. There was an extended island power outage during our stay, which was completely out of the hosts control, but they worked diligently to make it right for us. We highly recommend this property and we will certainly visit again

My family loved our stay. The house is on the quieter side of the island which we really appreciated. The communication leading up to our stay was thorough, and we were met on our first day to guide us to the house and walk us through the property. The grounds have trails that were fun.
The house had everything we needed and was very comfortable. I highly recommend you set an alarm to see sunrise at some point!
It's a really convenient location to beaches and trails.
This stay in Coral Bay was terrific! Thanks!

Amazing views over Coral Bay ! Clean and plenty of supplies. No A/C but trade winds provided cool evenings and we were never hot or uncomfortable. Very secluded. Beautiful walking trail on property through lush vegetation. Hot tub was very nice. Will stay again.

I could sit on the deck all day and all night. You will be in awe. Coffee on the deck in the morning to watch the sunrise. Beer on the deck at night to watch the stars. AC is not needed. The trade winds were perfect. Watching our beach towels drying off with the trade winds from the bedroom window with an unbelievable view of Corral Bay gave us the most relaxing feeling. The property managers were very helpful with our questions and teaching us how to park. We loved all the goats, chickens, donkeys and horse that freely roamed in corral
bay. The property manager did tell us to shop in Cruz bay for food. I wish we did that as there is not much in Corral Bay. I wish we took more advantage of the grill on the deck. But, we mostly ate lunch at the beaches with a painkiller. Awesome stay.

Property was unique, clean and comfortable. Walking paths throughout the property. I didn’t think we would use the jacuzzi but we did several evenings. Main bedroom, common areas and bathrooms were nice. The second bedroom with the bunk beds is small. We had most of our meals on the patio and there was a nice breeze. The drive to the property was easy and not too steep even though it was above coral bay. Caribbean banana bread and musical instruments a plus! We would definitely stay again.

Our family had the best stay at Stonegarden Cottage! We traveled with our two (children 8 and 12) and my parents. The set up was perfect for us. My parents enjoyed having their own space in the lower level apartment and our family of four stayed upstairs. Everything was even better than we expected. The cottage was very clean and had everything that we needed for a very comfortable stay. The property is gorgeously cared for and the view is probably one of the best on the island. We actually spent a lot of time just hanging out at the house and exploring the surrounding woods. We loved many decks and seating areas... Plenty of lovely spots to enjoy some quiet reading time :) The open air bathrooms are so cool too!
Coral bay is nice and laid back with everything you’ll need. It was really nice to be on the quiet side and still have many options for great food etc…! Skinny Legs was our favorite spot for lunches and the pizza at the Salty Mongoose was delicious.
Scott and Anysia were also very helpful and so friendly! They made it very easy to get settled and they answered any questions promptly. Thanks again for the delicious banana cake!
This really was an unforgettable experience and we are already working on a plan to return to this beautiful place. Thanks so much for everything you guys do to make this cottage feel like a home! We wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else:)

This property was exactly as advertised, and we could not be happier to have chosen it for our vacation. The owners and property managers were available and consistently helpful, and provided an experience that exceeded our expectations in every way. This was not our first time on St. John, but this property will be the first we will return to. We will also definitely recommend this property to our friends as well.

-This place was AMAZING!!! We stayed for our honeymoon and it was just perfect. The view is breathtaking from all over the property, including the back patio, dining room, bedroom, and hottub.
-The hot tub was spectacular! Worked, easy to control, easy to cover, and had hanging lights.
-Those trade winds blew all the time and were really nice to have. It was easy to keep cool with the fans in the whole cottage and winds blowing in through open screened windows.
-Everything worked in the place, including kitchen, wifi, grill, hot tub, fans. We didn't try the TV. Everything was also clean and well kept! The power never went out the 5 days we were there so we never got to see the Tesla power wall in action. Looked like it was fully charged based on the light indicator.
-Beach Gear: They had plenty of snorkel gear. It just took us some time at Maho Bay to figure out which one created a seal on our faces. And the chairs worked well too! One of the three we tried is missing an arm rest though. One of the umbrellas we tried looks to be rusted enough that its mechanism to hold itself open doesn’t work anymore. Didn’t really bother us!
-The property managers, Anysia and Scott, made sure that there was a heart shaped flower decoration on the table when we walked in, freshly backed mocha chocolate chip banana bread, and a bottle of Prosecco. Details on point! These two were also very kind, showed us everything we needed in the VRBO, and were responsive via text. The meet up at the Coral Bay sign was quite easy.
-A few other reviews noted the steep road, and at first those reviews made me nervous. But our Jeep easily got up and down that paved road to the cottage. Easy during the day and night. And it is so close to the Coral Bay restaurants and two grocery stores.
They have a few binders with local info on restaurants and to do, which is neat!
-Parking was easy at the cottage!
-We read online that our phones might pick up the British Virgin Islands cell phone towers and charge us for roaming. Looks like that didn’t happen to us. We have Cricket and our phones worked perfectly the whole time (S10 and S21 Galaxy). Call, text, and cellular internet, GPS had no problem. Island easy to navigate. We didn't have to buy any international plan.
-It was quiet and peaceful. It is also within 15 minutes of amazing beaches and Reef Bay hiking trail.
-The master bathroom is bathroom goals because of the plants and stain glass. Love all the plants on the propery.

My husband and I stayed at this property in early May 2022. We are frequent travelers to St. John and really loved the view from the deck. This property had a great kitchen to cook meals in .
Negative feedback about the property is there is no air conditioning which may work for some people but my husband and I found it was too hot to sleep well through the night especially on a bed with foam topper. Also my husband ( he weighs 170 pounds) went to sit up from one of the metal sling chairs on the deck and the chair seat ripped. The owner is now holding me responsible for replacement and asked me for 300 dollars to replace this chair (that is 27 dollars on Home Depot’s website) when the chair was dry rotted and exposed direct to sun/rain
. For those last reasons we will not stay at this property again.

We had a great stay. Check in was seamless and communication was welcoming. The property was everything it advertised and more. The new hot tub was perfect after a long day of snorkeling. There was plenty of hiking and nearby beaches to explore. Not having AC wasn't an issue and we found the temperature lovely. The views from the balcony during sunrise and the evening were breathtaking. We loved the special touches including the fresh flowers and homemade banana bread on arrival. We definitely hope to return soon.

The cottage is absolutely stunning inside and out! The property has the best views and has everything you could possibly think of for my entire family of 6 which included 3 somewhat handicap and a child. Words and pictures can not even begin to show the beautiful, serene tranquility of this property. It has everything anyone could want.

Stonegarden was away from noise and nightlife if that is what you are looking for. The views from the kitchen and deck are just amazing---other islands in view, the hills and turquoise water at 180 degrees. The property was clean and the gardens around and below the house were fun to explore. Very zen!

Breathtaking property with breathtaking views of Coral Bay. You get a wonderful sunrise here! Conveniently located right up the hill from the Dolphin market, making trips for grocery a breeze. I love this side of the island and this is one of the more beautiful villas I’ve stayed at. Would love to come back! Special shout out to the property managers Scott and Anysia, who do a great job! We were unable to get a rental car for day 1 or the trip and Anysia actually picked us up in Cruz Bay upon arrival and took us to the villa. Above and beyond service and really helped get trip started on the right foot! Stay here; you won’t regret it!

Can't say enough about this property. First, location made it easy to get to East End and the North Shore. Plenty of dining and grocery options very nearby. Cool breezes all day.
The cottage is very well equipped and immaculate. Loved the style and artwork Comfy! Comfy furniture, and the outdoor area was so great. Pretty morning views and serene afternoon vibe. The sun is never blazing in your face here, it just bathes the scene in light. When I return to St. John, I will schedule my stay around the availability of Stonegarden Cottage!

If you're looking for a property with loads of charm, a million dollar + view, a great location, and plenty of comfort, this property is for you. I stayed at Stone Garden with my wife and sons in December 2020. I selected the property based on the location (close to beaches and hikes), views, and reasonable price. Stone Garden did not disappoint. SG is 500 feet above Coral Bay, with amazing views of SJ's East End, Tortola, and other islands. SG is clean, quiet, and has several architectural features (e.g., stone work and open air showers) that give it true charm and authenticity. For me and my family, SG was a home run.

We had a great stay and thought both the house and views were really nice. Joy was very helpful while we were at the house and was quick to respond anytime we needed anything. The location is excellent, an easy drive from town and to the west side beaches. I was concerned about the lack of A/C, but it was very breezy and cool at night. We would be happy to stay here again.
