Location and level of service
Nothing, apart from the weather! (No one’s fault!)
4.3
Lovely location, old style hotel and the restaurant was good with good staff.
Beware the room you book will look different to the one you get unless you specify which one. Bathroom wasn’t cleaned properly, kettle strained and no usb sockets. Double glazing had gone in some of the windows with the frame rotten in places. Stained hall carpets and the chairs in the room are on the way out and should be repaired or replaced.

There was a constant electrical humming all night in our room. (Room 1) We turned everything off but we think it was coming into the room. It was barely audible during normal hours but when hotel was quiet and we were trying to sleep it was very annoying!

Great and competent assistant mgr. serving delicious dinner and breakfast.
Tiny old room with a bed suited for an infant and not for two adults. Bathroom even smaller with appliances prior Neanderthal.
Construction going on and workers peeped through our window in the evening and morning while my wife took a shower. Only disappeared after threatening legal charges.
Although booked an 11:00 am departure, housekeeping knocked on the door at 10:30 am, commanding for an immediate departure.
Our claim at reception on the peeping and
early departure requirement was ignored, same as any help wit our luggage.
Hotel was quite empty and now we know why.

Location
Dated room. Green growth on window frames. Still using wrapped plastic tumblers (two per room uses over 20000 per year at about 75% occupancy).

Lovely place to stay the sensational view is beautiful.
Itwas very peaceful just right for a brake .

Lovely location, nice big rooms and comfy bed. Good amount of tea, coffee , sugar and milk in room. Large reception area with a wonderful array of old photographs and curiosities. Staff were friendly.
No timetable for meals in the evening, missed an evening meal because no info in room. No room service either which for the cost of a room was a surprise. On the whole clean but a few noticeable cobwebs on ceiling, down radiator and bathroom fan needed a clean as did the base of the toilet. Also the scaffolding outside obscured the view which was a shame.

Absolutely loved the building and all the history that was in it , the ornate bedroom and four poster bed and decor was just lovely
We could not fault this property

Beautiful setting and fantastic stay. Sarah and the team looked after us superbly which with a group
of 8 was not always easy! Nothing was too much trouble, everyone was friendly and helpful and we will definitely be back.
Nothing

The location is very good. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. The evening meals were average the first night, but very good on the second. It would be good to have vegetables with the main course.
The shower had very low pressure and it took ages to adjust the water temperature.
The hotel has a lovely old world charm, but could do with updating in some areas, such as windows.

Nothing we didn't like

This Hotel is in a wonderful location. The staff are helpful and meal choices are good.
Having requested a ground floor room due to my wife being in a wheelchair we were upset not to have a larger bathroom.
Each time I had a reason to talk to the reception prior to our visit the dates dinner was available changed so we were never sure if we would be dining there or not.

breakfast was yum, I'm a vegetarian so didn't have a cooked breakfast except for the last morning. Apple juice to start and a glass of water. Yoghurt. Melon, a slice each of 2 kinds. 2 croissants. Green tea. My husband had the full cooked but they are v flexible with add-ons and take-offs.
dinner is easier this year than last. a new chef, v accommodating to personal requirements, I am meat and fish intolerant so a strict vegetarian. The tomato omelette provided when he had a coach party to cater for, was really lovely. my choices were good as we only dined in house a couple of times. The sister hotel, Bedford Hotel in Tavistock was a lovely alternative. Sandwiches were available on the chef's day off and all other days but there was a big demand so more stock needs to be ordered.
location is exceptional, you can't beat it. driving in after a fast bend is ok but I prefer to go out over the little bridge for more visibility. so close to so many walks and some you can leave your car at the hotel, depends on fitness, I walk with a stick, childhood injury.
leaving!
ice in water, or cold drinks makes them weaker.
running out of bread for sandwiches and oat cakes not available, we had our own crackers from home.
no egg sandwiches on the menu
poor parking, there is ample space if others are considerate but a few spaces should be hotel guest only.

location, the staff were lovely. food excellent
geese 😂 scared our dog 😂
but part of the charm!!

Breakfast very good . Comfortable feel about the place.
No shelf in the shower, not a great thing in the grand scheme of things but a major inconvenience when you are juggling soap, razor, flannel.b

A pleasant quiet moorland setting.
Sausage & Mash at £16.50 was ridiculous. It was nearly £10 for a glass of wine.
Pay attention to "extras" on your bill as our final bill had been inflated by around £10.

Soup and sandwoches for evening meal. Hotel had been v clear that dinner menu was not available on Mondays but as soon as they confirmed that the soup was homemade, I knew it would be great. It was!

A lovely old-fashioned hotel. Excellent location for Dartmoor - you can't do better! It's a beautiful setting and our room was idyllic overlooking the back of the hotel with woodland views. The food is good quality and we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the hotel. The complimentary book on the history of the hotel was a nice touch and an enjoyable read.
Breakfast is a narrow window even on weekends (08:00-09:30).
