My partner and I stayed at Funky Fish primarily so I could surf and she could relax and snorkel. The value for money and location is excellent for a chill, rustic, reasonably priced place to stay with all meals included on a nice semi-isolated beach. The staff are excellent, very friendly and accomodating and even hosted us and other guests for an impromptu Kava ceremony with a bunch of locals too.
For surfing its ideal and has boats that will take you 20mins to the reef breaks such as Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Nomotu lefts, swimming pools etc. The snorkelling / reef life nearby is amazing too. I would highly recommend for people wanting more budget, friendly and convenient place to stay as opposed to a fancy resort.

Interesting little resort in a remote location. More suited for surfers I think. Loveely little rooms with thatched roofs and seperate from the other rooms. Very laid back style.
All meals were provided, which sounded nice at first - but there was no choice and all the meals were very similar. There is no were else to go and eat nearby this resort.

Good location, friendly staff, cheap prices.
The transport from the main island to the hotel is not puncture as the timetable.

It was very run down.
From the second we arrived there was rubbish everywhere and old fridges washed up on the beach in front of the resort.
The staff did not seem welcoming and no smiles.
I have stayed at many budget places before but none this bad.
The room was dirty and no drinking water in the rooms.
The steps up to our room were all broken that it is a huge health and safety hazard that someone will hurt themselves soon on this.
So after an hour at the resort we booked somewhere else and moved there.
We would definitely not recommend this place.

great value for money, and having access to the best surfing waves.
food was included but was of poor quality.

You get what you pay for. Great value for money, especially for backpackers, or if you want to go out and explore. Great for surfing and snorkling excursions.
Unfortunately, it was quiet season, so we were the only people at the resort, we had hoped to meet other young people there. Staff all very friendly and helpful though

The bar / pool area was ok. The support staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome.
No wifi throughout our four day stay. Ran out of certain soft drinks, including bottled water! Management seemed insincere and we felt like excuses were being made about the lack of wifi. First it was because a part had to be sent for, then it was that it would be sorted that afternoon, then it wasn't sorted at all. Also, it is down to management to make sure that deliveries are arranged for things like said soft drinks and bottled water. Although we were happy to drink the tap water, other guests did not feel comfortable in doing this, so it made them feel uneasy.

The chef delivered quality food although there was little or no choice
The rooms were infested with mosquitos and bed bugs.
The manager was a disaster to deal with. He made us feel like a complete inconvenience, often completely ignoring us when we asked him to organise excursions for us.
The boat transfers were outrageously priced.
Do not stay here!

The chef Happi was awesome, accommodated my husbands seafood allergy for every meal and was very friendly!
It’s very dirty, blood stained sheets bugs and roaches in the rooms. The manager Tumali (I think that’s his name) was rude and unhelpful. Had to ask 3 or 4 times for him to do literally anything as small as getting fresh towels (we waited 2 hours for towels and hassled him 3 times to get them.)
The other staff were lovely but it’s definitely run down and overpriced for how gross it is.

I stayed in a basic beach bure for four nightsand it was completely fine if you’re good to go basic. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful though I do agree with some of the less dramatic comments about the manager. The food was fair though the breakfast is lacking - that said, I found them happy to provide an egg or two if you just asked. Otherwise it’s toast or Weatabix. some great snorkeling out front :)

Like most places in Fiji currently, the boat prices and thus all activity prices are exorbitant. $100 pp to be taken surfing for half a day, as an example - increased fuel prices are to blame but with 8 people in a boat, twice a day, $1600 seems a pretty penny for a 10-15 minute journey each way in a fishing boat. I see a gap in the market here! $89pp to go to be taken to one of the snorkel reefs (we found a local who took four of us out to all three reefs at once for $50pp, so it can be possible to beat Funky’s prices if you try). I’m sure all of this will be a long-forgotten issue once fuel prices come down again.

PROS
The best thing about this place was that our bungalow actually had a hot shower (despite all accommodations saying they offer hot showers). It was the best shower we had on the islands.
The kitchen staff was absolutely lovely & the place/garden is beautiful and well-maintained. The sheets were clean and the swimming pool was a bonus too!

CONS
My partner and I went for a stand-up ride and both our standups started to sink 15min after we went into the ocean. The bottoms of the standups were damaged so it was filling with water as we paddled.
My partner had to swim his way back, while I was lucky enough to be able to paddle almost the whole way before mine sunk too. I managed to ask for help and a lovely staff member (named Happy) didn't think twice before swimming towards him to help him come back and bring the standup (thanks for saving the day Happy!).
It was pretty scary, but what makes me really angry is that they were aware that the standups were no good, and after I reinforced it to the manager, she just ignored me, gave me a half-smile and kept the paddles available for use.$ I personally believe they shouldn't be available for use or guests should, at least, be informed that they shouldn't go too far with them.
----
The manager itself was also quite lovely on day one, but by our last day at the place, she was being really rude for no reason.
An example was that on our last day, we asked if we had enough time for a half-day trip before checkout and she replied "Don't worry, of course you do". When we came back from the trip and needed to check out, I asked "Hey there, how are you?" the response was a rude and sharp "$550" (which was our bill). I literally took a second to understand what she was saying so I asked "Sorry, is that our bill?" and another rude "$550" was her response again. She repeated it 3 times. I don't even know what exactly we were paying for as she didn't give a lot of room for questions there.
I understand we were in a hurry to take the boat back to the mainland, but she had 2 or 3 hours to close our bill before we went on the day trip and chose to do nothing, so I just think some kindness (and time management) will go a long way here.

For the low price paid compared to other resorts, the food was very satisfactory.
Activities mentioned on their website were not available.
I was charged extra for the transfer to the boat which was never mentioned and not the case on any other resort.
Dodgy manager who made me feel unsafe

the resort had a casual, friendly vibe where I noticed many single travellers easily making new friends.

Had a great 4 nights at 'Funky Fish', would recommend! Tumali organised boat trips twice a day to the local surf spots (Cloudbreak, Namoto left, Restaurants etc), it was very organised. The boat crew were great and happy to take us to any spots. The food was varied and catered to our vegetarian diet. The room was spacious and had a great view overlooking the ocean. Transfers to and from the resort were also well managed. All in all a fantastic stay and would love to come back. Thank you :)
Nothing.

We did enjoy our 4 night stay at funky fish and were able to put all the issues to one side and have a good and relaxing holiday. The staff were so lovely and helpful. The manager, Tumely, was very sweet and organised a boat charter for us and helped us book our scuba diving (which was a definite highlight!).
We also loved the proximity to the reef for snorkelling. The food got better throughout the week too as more guests came.
Also it was significantly cheaper than all other resorts in the area
We had no major issues but it was a series of small things that could be improved to make funky fish a lot more enjoyable:
Stained bedsheets and towels
So many mosquito's and no nets or coils available
Almost no staff at the start of our stay which meant no chef at breakfast and no choices for food options (although this did improve and the food was much better).
Expensive cocktails which weren't very good
We had a frustrating end to our holiday. We were told the boat would take us to mainland at 3pm, costing $64 each and a transfer would take us to the airport. Very last minute, this changed and we were told to get a different boat at 4pm. This ferry actually left at 3:45 so we watched it leave with our bags on. Luckily another boat was able to take us to the ferry. Then when on the boat we realised it was $80 per person and going to a different location to where our transfer was waiting. We arrived in Port Denarau with no airport transfer and had to pay for a taxi. In addition, the office hadn't processed our covid test results so we were frantically having to call them repeatedly.
It felt disorganised which was ok during our holiday (Fiji time!) But became quickly frustrating when we needed to get our flight, weren't on the right boat, didn't have a transfer and didn't have our covid test results.

Staff were excellent The location for snorkeling & surfing was perfect(15 to 20 minute boat ride for both..Excellent sunrise & sunset .Ideal to lay back & relax Max's fantastic birthday cake
Poor information of prices & activities available from surrounding resorts.Would have been good if they had more things available to hire at the resort eg..(surf boards ,flippers.

Great views. Manager and another attendant called Max were very helpful and accommodating. You don’t go hungry with the included food package.
Other staff seemed like they weren’t interested in helping and it could at times be difficult to get service from the front desk and bar. Prices were very much upped, a can of insect repellent was $15FJD when it’s $10FJD at another resort on the island. There is no such thing as being punctual when it matters, one example is we did a cloud9 trip and our small group of 5 were half an hour late, arriving after two large tour boats so there was no seating left. Felt more like an expensive home stay but it could be because it was low season and not busy.

Funky Fish was brilliant, Tumeli was a wonderful host from arrival to departure we were taken care of. The cook Max exceeded all expectations for the food he has passion and a smile with every meal. All of the staff were friendly. The snorkelling out the front of the property was unbelievable.
Don't expect a 5 star hotel but what it lacks in facilities it makes up with the staff and the relaxed atmosphere.
Was confusing to get there now we know. They have their own boats do not use south sea cruises when you get to the port they will try to convince you. Go to the Beachcomber stand in the port and they will check you in etc.

The staff were very friendly and attentive to needs. The food was delicious! There are some good views on this island. Accomodation is very basic, but there is a great communal area with a pool and wifi access.
The beach is pretty average.
7.0 / 10.0
Delicious foods every meal prepared by Max and his team. The staff was very kind and friendly. Activities such as boats to the surf breaks and out to cloud 9 were affordable. Snorkeling at the sandbar when the sun showed itself was amazing. Easy access to a nice nature hike/bush bash up from the heli pad provided incredible views. Free use of snorkeling gear and kayaks/SUPs were lovely for sunrise paddles.
Transport to funky fish was very disorganized. We took off from Anchorage resort on the mainland traveling at unsafe speeds given the wave height for how small of a boat we were on, often getting airborne as we crested waves and bouncing hard as we landed on the tops of others. When stopped at multiple islands. Some only for the crew to wave to friends. We then had to wait at beachcomber for over an hour for other passengers to arrive from port Denaru. This was after 16 hours of travel from the US. It then started raining and we were meant to wait on the beach with our luggage in the small boat uncovered. We took our rapid test after 48hrs and received a verbal negative confirmation. It then took us 5 days of multiple phone calls and emails to receive the results so that we could show these to our future accomodations. Night one of our stay we saw a very hard rain which resulted in our bathroom and 1/2 of the bedroom flooding with over an inch of water. The staff was very responsive in helping clear the water In a timely fashion.
Communication from the office staff needs to be worked on. I understand Fiji time is somewhat lax but we often didn't have a clue when a boat would be departing for activities until 10 mins before departure. The beach would leave most unsatisfied as it was pretty small and almost nonexistent at high tide and a mud flat more or less at low tide.
2.0 / 10.0
The staff were friendly and helpful. Great place to meet and interact with other guests, met some really cool people there. The food was decent given that it's an island. I'd give the staff 10/10 rating but the management deserves a flat out zero.
The facilities are worn down, and towels, bedsheets and cutlery have clearly seen better days, probably some decades ago. The electric kettle looked like a museum artefact and had some weird chemical smell to it. There were ants all over the room.
The worst part however was poor management. The resort is short of boats but they don't tell you that, rather the manager stuffs you around and keeps you waiting while making up excuses. Every 15 minutes you get told a different story. They will not bother organising boat trips when they're using the boat for a bigger group. This could have been managed by coordinating with the guests as many people are interested in same activities. Contrary to older reviews, non-motorised water activities aren't free anymore but you only find out when you check out as they're added to the bill. They're not expensive though, but the annoying part is that you don't get told upfront. The only thing that the manager did not waste time with was getting me to check out of the room asap while I had to wait for my boat to mainland, not being told the exact time of departure, finally departing at 3 pm while waiting in limbo on the deck all morning. Perhaps some things like ferry times aren't in the control of the resort but communication is.
I do not recommend for non-surfers and people who aren't in large groups as there isn't much to do, and they won't make activities happen if they don't have a larger group on the boat. Needless to say, there is basically nothing to do on the island if you're not in the water. Forget swimming as the water is only about knee-deep for miles.
