What a great place! Had everything we needed to be a perfect home base as we explored Acadia and the surrounding areas. Communication with the host was prompt and helpful and the accommodations were just right for our needs. The outdoor cooking and dining area made it easy to enjoy the view of the marina and harbor. We will definitely be back!

We enjoyed our stay, especially the walking distance to town and many outdoor activities. The cottage is snug, clean and nicely decorated. The outdoor kitchen was a huge plus.

The property is just past the center of Southwest Harbor and located near a marina, so you can see the water. It was easy to access all the sites of Acadia from this location. The cottage is new and everything is in good working order. If you plan to cook, you do need to take the limited kitchen into account. Still, it met our needs well.

This cottage is the perfect location on the "quiet side" of this area. Walkable to town, buses available to all attractions, amazing view and fitted out with everything we needed for a wonderful visit to the Bar Harbor area!!

From the get go we had a great experience. Our booking had a security issue which was handled immediately by Christy. She was prompt, thorough and thoughtful. Our arrival and entry was painless. Her and her families attention to detail is unmatched. The home was spotless, up to date/new, charming and the perfect place to come back to after a long day adventuring. The loft was our daughters favorite! The lack of cooking space suited us just fine- we often ate local baked goods for breakfast, a loaf of toasted local sourdough or a bowl of cereal. Lunch and dinner we enjoyed out. The proximity to Acadia is unmatched. Just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor. It has a spectacular harbor view ; we encountered daily fog which was a bummer for those early morning/ late evening porch hangs.
It’s a short walk to a little downtown area with just enough shops, we enjoyed the flamingo festivities and purchased local artisan momentous skipping the run of the mill shops in BH, found a cute sourdough bakery- Seafolk Sourdough which was a fun find and delicious. Hiked our way though many trails of Acadia finding wild blueberries along the way. Dined and enjoyed Bar Harbor and even went to the Mine Lumberjack Show- what a fun and entertaining rain filled evening- especially for our 6year old.
Seriously- this home was hands down one of our favorite VRBO rentals- we look forward to a return trip as we just didn’t have enough days to explore all that Acadia has to offer!

This was a great spot for our family on our week stay exploring Acadia. It’s on the “quiet side” of the island but still walkable to a very cute strip of shops and restaurants. It’s an easy drive to Bar Harbor on the days we headed that direction. There are a lot of good hikes that start in just a 5-10 min drive from the house. We used the grill to cook multiple nights and had everything we needed. The fire pit was great for s’mores with the kids and has a great view of the harbor. Everything was comfortable inside. We would definitely stay again.

Cottage is well located on the Quietside with many thoughtful touches. The property owner even dropped off flashlights on a particular Lu windy night when she thought the power could go out. It didn’t but we felt well taken care of. Had we been there during Summer the outdoor spaces also liked very inviting. I would definitely recommend.

This little cabin near the docks was clean, beautiful, and the perfect place to stay!
It is in a great location, everything in the cabin was spotless, and felt as cozy as home.
I have stayed in many different cabins on the island over the last 2 decades, and this by far was the best kept, most modern, and I would definitely recommend this to any looking for a cozy getaway!

This was a beautiful, well equipped home. Hosts communicated well and were very accommodating.

This property was very clean and nicely updated. The view of the water, the fire pit, and outdoor table were very nice. It is nicely decorated inside and has many of the things you need. However, to describe this is a "kitchenette" is highly deceptive. It needs a work surface and a sink in the common area to be called a kitchenette. Washing dishes in the bathroom was less than optimal. It desperately needs storage space for everyday items like cereal and bread and there are no closets at all. There is no dresser in the loft and there is plenty of room for one. Plan to live out of your suitcase and have dry goods scattered about the living room. Also, the huge oil truck out front could have been tucked away or parked at the marina, it is the first thing you see when you pull in and the first thing when you walk outside. Finally, a laundry area would be a huge improvement for an active family.
We thought of several different layouts that would have used this space much more effectively and we would put a second sink and some storage and counter surfaces as the number top priorities.
Owner was responsive.

Beautifully appointed cozy cottage in Soutwest Harbor within walking distance of local restaurants and shopping. A quiet retreat to relax and enjoy nearby hiking trails and other activities and take in the incredible views of Acadia National Park.

The cottage is modern, tastefully designed, and immaculate. The view of the ocean is limited, but the breeze is wonderful. We enjoyed walking down to the marina to look at the boats in the beautiful harbor. The location is great for families, as most activities are a short drive away, plus downtown is an easy 5-10 min walk. We would happily stay here again.

Amazing trip to Southwest Harbor
The whale’s tail cottage was a perfect landing point for our family’s vacation on the “Quiet Side” after a busy day of hiking and exploring Mount Desert Island. The house was very clean and walkable to the shops and restaurants in Southwest Harbor. Our 4 and 6 year old boys loved playing outside and exploring the rocky beach in front of the property at low tide as well as roasting marshmallows at the shared fire pit.
Christie was a very gracious and responsive host. I contacted her a few days before our trip to ask about a few things at the house and she replied within an hour. She even purchased a clothes drying rack for the house after I asked her if we should bring our own.
We knew ahead of time there would not be a stove, oven, or washer/dryer, which was never a problem - this forced us to plan our meals, use the outdoor grill, and eat out at some really nice restaurants and cafes. We also greatly appreciated the AC during the heat wave!
We highly recommend visiting Southwest Harbor and staying at the whale’s tail cottage!

Amazing location
The cottage was awesome. Nicely appointed especially with things we forgot to pack. So quiet and peaceful compared to Bar Harbor. Would highly recommend.

Delightful!
The Whale’s Tail exceeded my expectations. Not only was it attractively decorated, but was supplied with every possible need plus extras like pancake mix and syrup. The bed had four pillows; two soft and two firm so that we had a choice.
The location was close to the center of town with a view of the harbor from the rocking chairs on the porch.
Our stay was delightful!

Cozy and private
Whale's Tail Cottage was just as nice as the description sounded -- actually the photos don't really do it justice. The cottage itself was just right for the two of us, with everything we needed (and everything spotless and looking nearly new!). It's very private and peaceful but perfectly situated within walking distance to restaurants and shops in Southwest Harbor, a VERY short drive to the western sections of Acadia, and an easy drive to Bar Harbor and the eastern section of the park. Christie was a very considerate host who went out of her way to help us feel at home. We enjoyed exploring the area on the sunny days and chilling at the cottage on the rainy ones. (It was June so some rain was to be expected!) Wifi was great, the bed was comfortable and the kitchen facilities were just as described which was fine for us. We made some lovely new memories during our stay in this spectacular part of the country and can't wait to come back!

Lovely, perfect cottage on the "quiet side" of the island!!
My husband and I found the cottage perfect for us! It was our first time in Acadia and we are so glad we found this place! It was equipped with everything we needed and had a view of the harbor. We enjoyed sitting by the firepit and walking into the small town nearby. We ate nearby several times and really loved coming back to this cottage at the end of a busy day hikin and exploring!!

The host was very responsive to questions. Cupboard was well-stocked with essentials: salt & pepper, cooking oil and spray, pancake mix and syrup. Food prep facilities were minimal but that was clearly described in the property description.

Relaxing get-a-way
The property location and amenities are as described. The cottage is meticulously done. The owners utilize every inch downstairs to create efficiency and organization. Our son, 16, stayed in the loft and enjoyed the private space, play and reading nook and view of the harbor from the bed. The shared space outside has plenty of room and seating, nice fire pit area overlooking the harbor. Comfortable! Great location for a long weekend. Christie is a great host and was very responsive. We visit MDI often, we’d stay here again.
One suggestion- add a light over or near the dinner table.

Wonderful location
This was our first time in Maine and everything in Bar Harbor was booked and now we are so glad we stayed in Southwest Harbor at Whales Cottage. It's very clean and fresh, bed are comfortable and the owner pay attention to the details. There were books for all ages, puzzles, magazine and movies ready to be enjoyed. The location is wonderful. You can walk to restaurants, ice cream parlor and bakeries and Acadia National Park is within a few minutes drive. We will definitely return and stay here again.

Wonderful cottage in a great location
We loved our week at Whale's Tail cottage. The location was perfect for going in and out of the park without the crowds of Bar Harbor. The cottage was new, clean and comfortable for the four of us, with the kids loving the loft as their own reading space. At night, the living room was a great place for TV and games as a family. And Christie was a fabulous host. Can't wait to go back!
