Good location, lovely and clean. We only stayed one night on route to river cruise. Staff very helpful with directions to river cruise.

Breakfast was expensive as there was 5 of us staying. We went out to tearoom nearby. Hotel doesn't look like much from outside but lovely and clean inside.

I didn’t like the fact that the bathroom door was made of glass so it was a little seethrough and it didn’t close properly; there was still a space between the door and the door frame.

The staff were helpful, accurate, kind. Kudos to the kitchen staff and the breakfast waitress who was super gentle and communicated well.

Small bed, very simple decoration (I guess it's the definition of "you only get what you pay for"), more like a small town motel room.

Location: very close to congress centre. Own Parking spot in the hotel.

Helping staff

I booked my room at Hotel du Commerce via booking.com. When I arrived, the lady at the desk immediately told me, I wouldn´t like the room and I should pay 40CHF extra for a room with air conditioning. Turnet out, the room they gave me was on the 5th floor under the roof with no air conditioning and 31°C outside. It looked like a youth hostel from the 80ies, not at all like the images on the website or in my booking confirmation. She also told me all their standard rooms come without air conditioning and the beds are very small (I’m 6´3 in height). Well, she was right. I didn´t like the room because it was unbearably hot and I was going to have an important conference the next day. When I showed her my booking confirmation (including air conditioning for the room), she said that’s not her fault (but booking.com ´s fault) and became increasingly unfriendly and outrageous. She made fun of me and didn´t offer any solution, no signs of any goodwill at all. It's important to say that the hotel was not booked out but still they wouldn't want to offer me a room with air conditioning without paying an additional CHF 40. I strongly advise to avoid this hotel, just don’t go there. The lack of an air condition is one thing but the misbehaviour of the staff is just sad.

Check In (Automated) and trying to figure out parking: awful, staff to help not available. When called we spoke to a gentleman who guided us to the right parking area and said to call back if there were any problems. On check in (automated) the machine said it had printed two cards, but neither came out. When we asked for a receipt, the receipt was blank. We rang the same gentleman who said he would be available for further questions, but each time we tried (3 times) our call was not answered. We had to check in again with a different method to get a single card. We are still unsure whether we will be charged for only returning one card as opposed to the three that they have on record for us having. On checkout, we were very much unaware of the process as it was not made clear at all. There was another gentleman in the lobby asking the same question and unfortunately we both held our hands up in dismay. We left our card on the empty check in counter and hope that it was ok. Unless you have experienced this exact process before, we would advise to avoid at all costs. Luckily, due to no people being there, the car park was empty... For automated check in, it should work without phone calls.

Hotel du Commerce was a very pleasant place to stay in Basel. It was conveniently located for Basel city centre and there was breakfast available onsite, albeit somewhat expensive. The room was small and basic but perfectly adequate, and was spotlessly clean.

It was somewhat difficult to get in when I arrived, late in the evening. There is nobody at reception, so you have to work out how to register on a machine outside. Maybe the most difficult step was knowing how to get the door to open once the registration had been completed. Breakfast was also a little expensive.

We were met with an excellent front desk staff. The room was very clean.

The lighting system was confusing. The lights, both in the bedroom and the bathroom, were either all on or all off. We could not make individual selections. Could have been operator error?
