Conveniently located and great service. Very hospitable and great dining experience with onsen amenities.

Excellent facilities with excellent service at a great location.

Pleasant staff but rooms are tired so better value elsewhere in town

My family and I had a wonderful stay at Hoshokaku. We splurged for the room with the private onsen on deck and were so happy we did - it is well worth it to have your own private bath and the views of Takayama are amazing. Hoshokaku is a beautiful ryokan and service was impeccable. We enjoyed our meals in the dining area - which were delicious. The ryokan is up on a hill so it is a bit of a hike up back from old town but definitely manageable. We loved our time at Hoshokaku and would love to return.

This is a nice ryokan with a good staff, welcoming and helpful. The inn is on the simple side, which does not refer to the spare Japanese tradition but to its now being a bit dated. The dining is as one can expect in a ryokan, thus traditional Japanese. The area around is a lovely park above the inn and the old town, touristy but attractive, directly below. The price is what one expects in Japan, thus expensive relative to comparable lodging elsewhere. Takayama is worth visiting, and this inn is a good base.

We stayed here for one night and really enjoyed the onsen and the food. The female onsen has one indoor and 2 outdoor pools, which give us plenty of personal space when having the hot spring. We were lucky that very few people used the onsen during our stay, and sometimes we even had the whole place to me and my daughter! Another highlight is the foot spa located on the roof level. It was nice to sooth your feet in the hot water and look out to the shimmering lights in town at night.
We had a package that included dinner and breakfast which were delicious and very filling.

我在expedia訂個3人房間,但不小心訂了2人,我立刻用expedia訊息直接跟酒店方溝通,等了幾天終於回覆我,對話如下:

Dear Lok kei Lee, My apologies for the late reply. I've been out of the office since last week. Breakfast is included in your plan. We all look forward to seeing you in January. Kind Regards, General Manager Katsuyoshi Dentani

Good view, friendly staff, good breakfast. I love the Private hot spring in room.

Very good in all aspects - hospitality, cleanliness, services, ......., anything you mention.

The hotel is traditional which is what we were after, however, it was quite dated. You can tell money has been spent downstairs to bring it up to a better standard, but the bedrooms we had (western twin and japenese twin futon) were small, bathrooms very dated, smelt smoky & the mattresses were lumpy/ springy. The onsen is nice - three baths for women (can’t comment on the men’s) one inside and two outside. Very clean and private located on ground floor. The top floor has a foot spa with nice views. The other top floor onsen facilities you have to rent. However we found the ground floor facilities nice and adequate. The hotel is located 5 mins from the old town & they offer free pick up/ drop off from the station which is great for when you’ve got a lot of luggage. We stayed two nights and that was plenty, for the hotel and the area. Staff very friendly and lovely. We had the breakfast and it was, traditional (not to our tastes but glad we tried it). Would recommend this hotel if you want traditional but be aware it is quite dated.

Very friendly staff, hotel is on the hillside, recommend to people who are driving. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel, food was great and we booked onsen on 5/f with $1500 yen additional, only for women, value for money.

This is our 2nd times to stay in this hotel, it always gives us a precious moment. In no doubt, we would love to come back & stay for our 3rd time again!

Great experience at Hoshokaku. Great location and walking distance to the old town. They provide transfer service from the train station and daily morning shuttle bus. The daily meals, housekeeping and service were excellent. Totally enjoyed my time in Takayama,

Amazingly wonderful. The best ryokan onsen my wife and I have experienced. We will go back.

This place is AMAZING. In addition to the beautiful atmosphere and the gorgace location, we got an OUTSTANDING help from a staff member that made numerous calls to resolve a bus schedule that was changed because of the typhoon and was able to resolve the situation. Food is excellent and is served in a beautiful way. If we go back to Takayama this is the place we'll stay !!!

From the start of our visit, when we were met by friendly staff who looked after us very well, we felt pampered. And this continued for the rest of our time there.

A lovely traditional Japanese style hotel. I like the interior very much. Room is spacious. Public bathroom and onsen are nice. Staffs are all friendly and willing to help. Recommend to stay!

Hotel staff were very attentive. Saki is a great credit to the hotel and could not do enough to help us in both our enquiries prior to our arrival and when we were at the hotel. Had a Japanese style room as we had to move from the smoking room which we were first offered. Good pick up service and return from/to the station. Very handy to a large park with magnificent autumn leaves during our stay but also within easy walking distance to the old part of town.

Overall are very good. We can enjoy a very nice holiday.

A couple of staff werent as friendly as we were used to in Japan but the rest were nice. Highlight is definitely the hot baths with massage chair! Beds felt pretty old and lumpy and the room generally felt a bit like you were in your Grannys spare back bedroom but was just about the right side of quaint to get away with it.
4.4
We wanted to be more in the middle of town but this place was great. The Spa very nice and many of the other guests were Japanese. The walk up the hill can be a bit of a climb but it is worth it.
4.4
Lovely ground floor rooms and excellent location for walking to shops and market

Hot spring and bath was good. N service also good

According to our booking confirmation letter sent by Hotels.com, breakfast should be included, but the staff of Hoshokaku kept insisting that our plan did not include any breakfast. People who consider to book this hotel because of the included breakfast should watch out since the staff only believe in their own booking information but not yours. Plus, the free breakfast you see on the description of Hoshokaku is not real as well, not sure its the problem between Hoshokaku and hotels. com or not.
4.4
Good hotel, a little out of town but easily walkable with very helpful staff and lovely onsen (quiet in the day but very busy in evening). The rooms are a little run down but spacious and comfortable.

We got an amazing deal so chose to stay here. It turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip.
The hotel is on the other side of town from the station, but right in the heart of the cherry blossom festival - so the trade-off is a no-brainer. A cab costs about 1,800 yen.
Staff were not great with English, but went out of their way to help anyway! So lovely.
Dining was good for dinner (traditional Japanese style) but we probably would have preferred a buffet breakfast than the traditional Japanese breakfast set-menu. But like I said - it was a good deal so we managed anyway :)
This hotel has probably the best public bath in the town - anything better is a fair drive away out of town.
