I can only say I wish I was able to book more days!
The ryokan is owned and run by a lovely couple. The breakfast was delicious and the hospitality was exceptional. I booked this place because I wanted to experience sleeping on a traditional Japanese bedding on tatami. The house itself has been passed down for generations and is absolutely beautiful.
A few things to note. I knew ahead of time and I did not mind these things. However, you might. 1. Since this is a house, you will be occupying a room and be 1 out of 3 guests staying there per night. This means there is no restroom in your room. You share one with the other guests in the house. This means walking out of your room and going to the shared house toilet. It wasn't an issue for us, and I never ran into anyone in the restroom. 2. Since there is no restroom in the room, naturally there is no shower. Each guest will need to book a time to use the shower room that has a small onsen bath. The host will explain everything during check in, but if you aren't comfortable with these things, you should find another place.

Niec family but overpriced for what it is / sub standard quality
The family running the hotel is very nice and polite. setting is quite nice with the pond, but lacks care / renovation.
I’m sorry to say but this ryokan didn’t meet our expectations… I know it’s an old ryokan but it does not mean that the towels and hairdryer have to be from the previous century as well for this money…. Overall, not worth the money. No privacy (room not closing), old equipment, need to reserve shower downstairs.. (cannot take shower when you want). Bath is old.. overall quite strict rules for everything - cannot store luggage on the check out day post 1pm, need to reserve shower, need to return to the premises by 10 or 11pm in the night.. Not convinced. we’ve visited much better ryokans which included natural onset for similar price, and modern hotels are 50% cheaper than that one and more convenient.. so I’m sorry to say but overpriced and not delivering up to standard it is positioned.

One of the best experiences we’ve had in a while!
This was one of the best experiences we’ve had in a while. We really enjoyed our stay at Kikokuso. The Ryokan was beautiful with a cute garden with Kois. The room was confortable and cosy. It was our first time sleeping on futons but we slept really well. The breakfasts (traditional Japanese breakfasts) were amazing. We also had shabu shabu diner on the second night and it was de-li-cious! The family hot bath was just perfect after a long day of walk in Kyoto. Finally, the family that runs the inn was just the nicest people you could ever meet. We will definitely come back the next time we come to Kyoto!!
Nothing.

Wonderful ryokan experience
This was my first experience staying in a traditional ryokan and wow, it did not disappoint! The family who own and run this ryokan are absolutely lovely and took time to explain everything, offering green tea and a sweet on arrival. It was so peaceful and relaxing looking out on the internal courtyard garden. I had the best sleep! The traditional Japanese breakfast was amazing. If you want to experience a ryokan in Kyoto, stay here!

A wonderful traditional experience
This traditional ryokan was wonderful. The owners are so kind and welcoming and we felt like home. There was also an onsen and the traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious. A great experience!

Highly Recommended
The delightful couple that run this old family business are exceptionally kind and hospitable. The husband is chef and prepares the most wonderful, authentically Japanese meals which were a highlight of our stay. I loved our 2 tatami mat rooms with the futons, low table and paper screens at the windows, which made for a very traditional experience for overawed Europeans. There is a beautiful ornamental fish pond and garden too! We a are retired couple & had the one room with private facilities, travelling in March 2024.
I was happy with everything but my OH found the futons too hard for his ageing bones and hardly slept. Japanese beds & mattresses are harder than westerners are used to and that’s OK, it’s all part of the experience and must be accepted. It’s just that this is difficult when suffering a crochetty, tired husband!

Muito bom
A localização é ótima, e fica perto dos principais pontos turísticos. Além disso os donos são muitos simpáticos e me receberam muito bem durante os dias que fiquei. O quarto é ótimo, espaçoso e muito limpo.
