The location and the nature around is beautiful, the staff were all helpful and polite. The dinner location was really beautiful, next to a lovely river.
The place was poorly maintained. It was clean, however it was clearly a decades-old establishment and it was worn out in many ways. Normally that could be acceptable, but not for the price we paid. Also, the use of a private bath was charged extra, on top of the already very high room rate, and only one slot was available at the time we arrived so we had to do a rushed visit to the bath between arriving and being escorted to dinner.
The feeling we had was more of an old hotel in a village, that should have cost a lot less, rather than the unique experience we were expecting to have for the price we paid.

The service was great. They have a free shuttle bus that takes you from the nearby stations to the ryokan. When you arrive, they take your luggage to your room, explain how everything works, etc. The experience felt quite luxurious in this aspect. We loved the experience of wearing a traditional yukata to dinner and breakfast, which were both amazing! Lots of food and they were able to offer a vegetarian option. We were lucky to book for a Saturday, and we got to meet and see the performance of two Kyoto maikos during dinner. The public bath was peaceful and didn't have too many people, but you can always book a private outdoor bath which costs a bit extra. The ryokan is next to the mountain, and dinner takes place next to a river. The scenery was stunning. Highly recommended!
The only negative side is that the rooms are slightly old, but this is expected from a traditional inn.

beautiful place to stay in the heart of nature
There’s no convenience store near by. no 7/11 or Lawson but apart from that it’s was really good

Location, service, food, Onsen, amenity…. everything!
We loved everything - it’s just that the hot water in the private bathtub (you can reserve it for 45 min) was too hot. I had a hard time even though I’m Japanese and my husband (Spanish) couldn’t get in. Maybe they can have warning for foreign guests (and even for Japanese guests…)

Location - in the mountains north of Kyoto, away from the city. Beautiful wooded areas with rivers running through. Different walking trails and paths to various temples and shrines in the area. Very enjoyable to hike and explore- would recommend trying to arrive early for exploration if you're into that - we arrived in the early afternoon and couldn't fit it all in before dinner. Staff were very welcoming and easy to ask for assistance and the service was excellent. Optional outdoor Onsen (hot spring) was quite enjoyable. Dinner was a set meal on a platform right by the river which was very unique and charming. Great view of a tree in bloom and wooded mountains from the hotel room window as well as the sound of a running river.
The food at dinner was good but would have appreciated some additional guidance on what we were eating and how to eat it. Even if staff don't speak English, a card would have sufficed to explain the food items and how they're typically used (example - table next to us thought the egg on the table was hard boiled and cracked it open only to find out it was raw - we later found out the egg is added to your soup by staff). I have seen other restaurants adopt this strategy and it would go a long way to make foreigners feel more at ease.
Beds were firm, but this seems to be the norm at most hotels in Japan.

1. The location may be in a remote part of Kyoto but there is a free shuttle service from the Hanazono Station that the hotel provides. It felt like an adventure to explore the temples and grounds in the surroundings of the hotel. There was hardly anyone around and we enjoyed the refreshing air.
2. The staff was very attentive.
3. The private onsen (have to pay an extra 3000 yen) opened up to amazing views.
1. The dinner was held at a restaurant located at the riverside in the cold. The meal was supposed to be a highlight for us. Unfortunately, being in an open air restaurant marred the experience. I noticed that there was a small portable heater. However, the heater was too far away from the table that we were assigned.
2. The standard of dinner was so-so, considering the price we paid.

very great location, away from crowded city centre; caring personnel as expected for a Ryokan
nothing, all great

It was easy to get to this remote ryokan taking the JR West bus, it literally drops you off right outside, so don't be concerned if it looks like it's out of the way. The hospitality we encountered, and the amazing scenery made this an unforgettable stay.

Complimentary shuttle service from the nearest subway is particularly useful. The view from the hotel and the room is nice. Dinner and breakfast are very delicious but the portion is really too big. We were struggling to finish the dinner!
The room and the fittings are quite old.
There is an extra charge if you want to use the private onsen. You are only allowed 45 minutes in the private onsen.
The onsen and the private onsen don't look very clean. The facilities are also quite old.
We were expecting a bit more for this price.

Very well managed and friendly staff
Wish they supplied shuttle buses closer to the main subway stations

The staff and the food! My goodness, the hospitality was exceptional! We were also so well fed. Highly recommend signing up for half boarding especially as the hotel is quite far out from town with infrequent shuttles..you do need to plan your days VERY carefully - especially if you want to visit Kyoto’s bar scenes & catch Geishas, as dinner’s last sitting is at 6.30pm (last shuttle at 5!)
The private Onsen was fantastic; amazing views.
I’m very fussy with bathrooms and I felt it wasn’t as clean as it could be. The hote location itself was beautiful but definitely inconvenient and difficult to get to especially if you want to explore central Kyoto - it’s a 15 minute uber ride from Hanazono JR station (Hanazono itself has trains every 15 minutes..) and the hotel shuttle didn’t run frequently enough.

Private onsen was amazing and meals were delicious
Hot water didn't work in the room, we had to shower and wash hair in the communal shower, that was quite uncomfortable

Private Onsen has a great view and the food was delicious (and a lot!).

Loved the location and the view, the food was amazing as well as the service especially the service. loved the baths and the experience of sleeping on futons, couldn’t recommend this place more
Even though the location is stunning it is a bit far away from the city, there is a shuttle bus which isn’t that frequent and a city bus which is also infrequent and takes ages to get anywhere, plan you day to avoid problems
