Joseph, the factotum of the host, is a great plus bonus for the staying. In the heart of the town, you will see also a part of the lifestyle of the people

We appreciated the efforts of Joseph, the manager, to respond to all our enquiries. He is a very gentle person who follows through with the guests' needs. He was kind enough to take us to a Saturday night party which brought some distraction to our stay in beautiful Shela.
Warm water is provided but the manager needs to be informed in advance. This might inconvenience people who are in a hurry for taking a shower. The pressure of the water is lacking and could surely be improved.

The staff at this place were phenomenal - very attentive and went out of their way to ensure you had a comfortable stay not only at the property but in Lamu in general. Shout out to Joseph who did a particularly amazing job!
You need to ask staff to turn on the hot water before you can get it, but not too bad; once it’s on, the shower is nice and hot.
The property is a bit difficult to find, with no signs outside the building to indicate that it is Shiban House. Easier to call the staff and ask them to pick you up at the Shela dock.

Spacious and beautifully decorated Swahili house. We got upgraded on our arrival and had the huge upstairs room with the biggest bed we’ve ever seen! The balcony and rooftop lounge area were great for relaxing with incredible views. Very clean rooms. Nice breakfast including traditional Swahili foods as an option. The manager Joseph was outstanding - he went out of his way to show us around, finding various places and helping us organise our day. Huge thanks to Joseph for making our stay so enjoyable!

After 2 nights in Lamu we moved to Shela. It was a good decision and this is a lovely place to stay. The manager Joseph made sure our stay was fantastic from helping organising laundry to walking us to a restaurant to taking us to our moto transfer on our final morning to getting up early and providing a 6am breakfast. A very hard working and friendly gentleman. The property is beautiful, the room very good, breakfast excellent, and it has a lovely roof terrace. Thanks very much

Joseph was so helpful with everything! made our stay easier. location was great, comfortable beds.
I thought there was AC in the bedroom, but it was just a fan, unless we missed something.. bathroom could use an upgrade but nothing terrible.

It's a nice and quiet area that feels very safe and a bit away from the posh tourist places. The bed was huge and comfy. Joseph was very helpful and always reachable if we needed anything. For example, the first night, we asked for an extra fan for the room as the ceiling fan didn't do a very good job, and Joseph instantly got us one.
The ceiling fan didn't have any effect.
The mosquito net had big holes in it.
We didn't book it but tried once anyway: the breakfast was very minimalistic apart from a tasty fresh juice.
We know that it is a local and seasonal problem, however, the tap water was running very low, and at some times during the day, there was simply not enough water to shower or brush the teeth.

open air rooms means you hear a lot of noise from outside

We had a great amount of space, and access to the terrace outside our room and the rooftop upstairs. Quick 6/7 minute walk to the beach and close to a little shop that sell amazing early morning snacks and a fridge full of cold drinks.
The room (ours was top floor room) had wonderful air flow, and constant breeze which was very welcome in the heat.
Staff were all great and very kind.
Quiet streets after 10pm with only the sound of the donkeys and the odd cat. Very cool.
We had to pay our entire stay in cash. No card machines at all. Anywhere on the island infact. So get M-Pesa before you go or you’ll be carrying bundles of cash with you wherever you go.
We had to go get cash from a shop - Aman. They charge 5% for every exchange. There is no other bank so you’re kinda forced to. We didn’t mind so much but some forewarning would be nice. I think Aman are turning a massive profit off all the clueless tourists all taking out hundreds and even thousands of dollars at a time! Slightly suspicious 🤨
Bathroom could do with slight spruce up. Became a bit damp in there after few days.

Joseph was a wonderful host. Always trying to make our stay as comfortable as possible (organising boat trips, preparing the breakfast as we wished etc.).
The room was very spacious and the bed was the biggest bed we have ever had.
One night we had wedding with loud music in front of our window but that must have been an exception and the hosts can't be blamed for it.

Shiban House is a beautiful place to stay with Swahili style architecture and decoration. Joseph, the manager was extremely helpful with showing us around and setting up activities like sunset dhow, visiting takwa ruins, etc. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Lamu.
It can be a little tricky to find tucked in the winding streets, but for us it was part of the adventure of exploring the town.

The breakfast was always prepared fresh each day and was usually more than we could eat at once. You have the option to eat family style with other guests, which we did on some days.

Shiban house is a great place to stay in Shela. Biggest, most comfortable beds you’ll ever see in a very clean house.
Rooms and common areas are very spacious and there’s a great atmosphere to the place.
what stands out in Shiban house though are the hosts. Jozef does an amazing job at making you feel at home and helping you around, with an everlasting smile and lightheartedness.
100% recommend staying here.

Pepe the owner looks after you very well, and Joseph is on hand to guide you with whatever you need. The bedrooms are nice and big and there's a balcony with good views & sun. The walk to the seafront isn't far, and getting lost in the winding streets is kinda fun anyway.

The bed is big and comfortable for a couple.
The room we had is big.
The property has a lounge area on the top most floor, which has a view of the ocean. Sitting there is quite therapeutic.
We were offered good breakfast.
Perpetuah the host, and her staff, were really friendly. They welcomed us with a cold glass of juice.
Place is a little bit interior in Shella, but someone can find it with good use of Google maps.
The shower is cold, or if there is a hot water option, it’s difficult to get it.
Breakfast doesn’t come early, so someone with a really early morning errand should have their options for early breakfast elsewhere.

The host and staff are very friendly and helpful. It is very reasonably priced property, good value. And also very clean
The breakfast was preferential to some guests and not others. We were never asked what we would like for breakfast but noticed we were served mbaazi 2 days consecutively because another guest likes it.
