Nice lobby bar, garden, spacious room.
Upon arrival, we discovered that the air con was not working in our room. It was newly replaced, but the company was unable to start it. I understand that this can happen, but I expect an active solution to this situation from a 5* hotel. Instead, we were only informed that there was a fan in the room instead of air conditioning. The temperature in the room was still between 28 and 28 degrees even though we had the curtains drawn all day. When we requested to change the room, we were offered a lower quality room, without a balcony, which we did not want. In the end, we agreed on compensation in the form of a later check out.
The main problem is that the hotel should actively offer guests compensation for such an unpleasant situation. We had to appeal to the reception four times to wait for a solution.

Really lovely old style hotel with plenty of indoor seating area, nice bar with piano player in evening (history was it was originally some sort of manor house). Small but nice Gardens, good sized room with balcony and super king comfy bed, excellent staff ( very friendly and couldn't do enough for you without being OTT) . The buffet breakfast was excellent (even a glass of bubbly if you wanted it!!) all the usual cereals, cheers, hams, fruits, pastries etc etc and then a great selection from the cooked section.
No aircon in room (this we were advised was in process of being updated throughout the hotel) not too much of an issue in April but wouldn't want to not have it in Mid summer.

it is a beautiful building set in beautiful grounds with large rooms and lovely facilities.
there’s nothing I didn’t like about it, but it is worth noting that it is a bit of a walk into town.
We picked it for this reason so that was a plus for us.
However there is a shuttle bus that runs from the hotel for people that prefer not to walk.

The staff were very pleasant, the room had a fabulously comfortable big bed, enjoyed the half covered heated pool, elegant decor, sunny balcony. Breakfast was good. Good views of the coastline from the upper pool. Pretty gardens.
No tea or coffee in the room, had to request water which was chargeable. ..so we found ourselves thirsty at times. The restaurant was more 4 star, but was pricey. if you’re a walker, the walk directly out of the hotel wasn’t great (though everything was accessible within 20 minutes and there was a shuttle)

The hotel is situated in a calm area about five minutes’ walk to downtown. Service minded staff, good cleaning and an outstanding kitchen with marvelous breakfasts and dinners. Great atmosphere more like a home than a hotel. We can highly recommend this hotel.
The only thing we can complain on is the indoor and outdoor pool. They are a little bit worn out, but the reception informed us that they are going to renovate the pools within a few months.

The hotel staff is amazing and made us felt welcome. It is a relatively small hotel, so you don't feel here like just another costumer, but you get to know all the members of the staff. We loved the restaurant - the food and the service were excellent. Also we were pleasently surprised that the hotel services' prices were very reasonable, sometimes even a bargain. The garden is very pleasant, even nicer than in the pictures.
The location is not the best if you want to walk everyday to the harbour and the old town. But it is a price for staying in a historical villa. And I think it is still have some highlights as you are outside of the busy part of town.
I wish there was some place dedicated to small kids, even some board games in a game room would be nice.

Near a noisey road so the windows had to be closed when sleeping

It was one of my best vacations!) Those wonderful people who created this hotel must love people very much, because the place is amazing.
And the territory is like an oasis, so green and full of unique plants!
Ambience is so peaceful and relaxing)
Our room was with a balcony, spacious and really clean)
the food in the restaurant and in Vasco da Gama bar was delicious! I’ll attach a photo of our breakfast and two lunches at Vasco da Gama) you’ll see that we loved the pasta - capellini with mushrooms:)
I’m vegetarian and I could easily find tasty options)
And also the whole place is sooo stylish, so many beautiful details and fresh flowers! And the view from the room of course! I’ll also attach the photo)
A huge thank you to this place and Madeira❤
Maybe even more options for vegetarians,
and it would be really great if at spa it were more serene: for me personally it’s hard to relax fully when somebody’s walking fast behind the door or talks loudly, so I’m sure everybody’s spa experience would be better due to this)

location can be a challenge to get to if you are driving (Funchal in general can be a challenge).

My room was big and comfortable, the staff extremely helpful and nice. I was surprised with a bottle of wine and a cake for my birthday which was waiting for me in my room. The drinks in the garden bar were great, and so was my spa treatment.
The location isn't the best unfortunately. It is far from the beach, far from the city center (approximately 20 mins walk). It is not convenient for having spontaneous coffees or meals in the local restaurants. The hotel restaurant where breakfast was served does not have an outdoor sitting area, the windows were mostly closed and it was a bit hot inside as the AC is either not installed there or was not on. It would be better if breakfast could be enjoyed in the lovely garden instead.

The service of the kind stuff is excellent. Food and drinks are very good (also for vegetarians). It is easy to walk into the city center
If possible ask for a room towards the garden. They are most quiet.

Beautiful garden, amazing spa, the hotel is charming !
Nothing (maybe no outlets next to the bed)

Friendly staff.
Nice massages at the SPA.
Rooms and facilities are very old.
Sink and bathtub were cracked; water was barely going away, etc - typical outdated property issues.
SPA facilities and swimming pools not renovated either, so besides the massage (which is an extra) it was not a great experience.
We left our room locked (with “Do not disturb” on the door) and found the door opened when we came back with nobody inside. Great safety! The staff told us “it was the wind” :)
This is nowhere close to a 5* hotel.

First off, the staff here are EXCELLENT, couldn't do enough to help you and were very friendly. The bar staff and the cocktails they make are amazing!! Lovely surrounds, beautiful pieces of art and furniture around the hotel.
We had a suite and it felt a little too cavernous at times. The hotel itself is quite dated, in need of some TLC in places (the indoor pool, the bathrooms) and it feels that they could use some of the hotel a bit better. E.g. the beautiful sunny courtyard out the back would be amazing for breakfast in the morning rather than the restaurant.

The atmosphere of the hotel and very relaxing garden. The breakfast was really rich and fresh. The Spa experience was amazing !
The indoor swimming pool was a bit cold to our taste
