The house was amazing, it was like a show house, very tastefully decorated and furnished. The location was perfect for exploring Harris and we only wished that we had more time there.
Nothing- the whole experience was outstanding.

Opening and closing the gate to get the car in and out.

The location was absolutely amazing. Lovely island, very peaceful.
The sheiling was fantastic, spotlessly clean. Had everything you need and more!
Beds very comfy, lots of towels and hot tub as an added extra.

The location is amazing. If you walk up to the bench the view is spectacular
I thought the hot tub would have been ready to use but you had to heat for around four hours

The mattresses were comfy and there was a lovely couple of bags of biscuits and a wine in the fridge on our arrival. The actual island of Scalpay itself is lovely as are Harris and Lewis.
I’ve never written a bad review but I have to agree with some of the other reviews: the photos make it look like it’s remote with a garden & states it’s a sea view. It’s not. The neighbours we met were lovely but you can be seen from all the bedrooms. There are only 3 not 4 by the way. The 4th advertised is the sofa bed in the games room, but the games have been removed. There are only 6 chairs, which are fraying a little, & you can’t fit 8 round the table. The hot tub was full & dirty when we arrived & you have to fill it, pay for extra wood after your first bag and then drain it, all details of which are sent over just before you arrive. It states it takes hours to fill and drain so we sadly didn’t attempt it. The bench in the pictures is a little walk away, they state to follow the lights but as they’d been blown over it took us three attempts (we fixed the ones we could see to help the next guests) The Wi-Fi codes in the pdf they sent are wrong so that should be amended to save stress. There’s no kettle and we couldn’t ever get the boiling tap to get to boiling point so resorted to pans on the hob for making hot drinks. One bathroom sink takes ages to drain, one doesn’t fill and the waterfall tap doesn’t quite fit the sink so when you turn it on it splashes back at you (change of outfit required) There weren’t enough bedroom lamps for the beds. There were missing light bulbs. It would be nice to have a table and chairs outside to enjoy. The garden is really just a little walkway covered in nettles so not good for children. We’d also been told we could have the place to ourselves on our last day but then told it had been double booked and we’d not only have to leave early but also clean it. When I asked if we’d could expect compensation I was told they ‘weren’t sure what the inconvenience was’ All that’s stated to do when you leave is turn the heaters and switches off & leave the used towels in the bath.

The standard of fixtures and fittings was very good and well laid out. The owner was very good at supplying initial information prior to travel and support when required by telephone/text during stay. Nice welcome pack and additional help from local staff. Supply of coffee for coffee machine was nice touch (although milk frother is missing tube for white coffee). Good selection of wines in honesty wine rack.
Unfortunately the wood fired Hot Tub was not up to hygiene standard expected upon arrival as water clarity left a lot to be desired. Had to empty and refill on first night which was not ideal. This may be due to responsibility for emptying and refilling left to guests ( I doubt previous guests had done this!) Maybe consideration for onsite staff to ensure tub is clean and fresh water is in place prior to new guests arrival.

The interior of the house is beautiful and small touches on arrival very nice
We were unaware about the time scale and adding around for the hot tub and gave up. The internet was really poor and the coffee machine couldn’t work as no pipe for the milk

We loved our stay at The Sheiling! The cottage was very well equipped for our family break and spotlessly clean. Marc was great to deal with and we can't wait to book our next stay :)
Nothing, we were delighted with the accommodation!

Nice big tv and comfortable fold out sofa bed
What you see in the photos during the booking process is not what we arrived to. There is an illusion of isolation but there were direct neighbours. It’s advertised as having a dartboard- there was not one. It’s advertised as having a wine rack with an honesty box arrangement- there were no bottles present. Cleanliness was extremely disappointing as crumbs and hairs from previous guests were found throughout the house and cup of coffee was sitting in the dirty microwave. No kettle. I informed the landlord immediately who did absolutely nothing to correct the situation for us over our entire 3 night stay. Bad damp smell. Completely unmaintained garden. On our last night a woman banged on the door at 10:30pm asking about linen. Completely inappropriate.

This is a super house to stay in, renovated with taste and comfort in mind. High quality facilities and washing machine. A remote location but absolutely stunning with local walks. My teenage children and us adults had one of the best holidays walking, cycle, swimming.
It sleeps 8 in three bedrooms ; the sofa bed in the games room is extremely comfortable.
The table tennis/ darts board has been removed; Xbox works great; bring your own headset.
There is ample extra bedding and towels left and there is equipment for toddlers if needed.
The hot tub was brilliant fun and we spent hours at the bench just taking in the view. This is a windy rural crofting area with abundance of rock and wild flowers.
I’m so sorry to write this but we had arranged to arrive at 2pm and were met with extreme rudeness by the housekeeper who made us feel really unwelcome; she refused us entry until 4pm with no plausible apparent reason as we saw her leave a few minutes later. She also demanded that we leave earlier than planned at the end of our stay which messed up our plans. It was unnecessary and it is obvious that she doesn’t routinely clean the house as thoroughly as it deserves. I cleaned the kitchen and mess from behind the beds, fixed the hoover; the owner arranged for toilet roll, hand soap etc to be brought to us by an extremely pleasant man. Don’t let my review put you off booking; as a change in staff would fix this problem. She was the only unwelcoming local we met during our week stay; everyone else was up for a chat, friendly and we had great time here. The owner was extremely apologetic and was as helpful as he could be on the phone, but I was upset by her behaviour and we had to vacate early for no good reason.
There are only 6 dining chairs, which could do with being recovered or replaced. If there are eight staying this means having to squeeze in or split meal times.
There is no longer a wine rack; local shops are very expensive; invest in some Harris gin from
The distillery for your stay. There are no shops or cafes in the immediate area. You might get lucky and get some eggs from the lighthouse. You can get a Tesco delivery or use the small shops in Tarbert.

Interesting location, lovely accommodation...
Information about the electrical appliances should be to hand. Kitchen short of some things, ie mixing bowl, soup spoons, jug...

Fabulous house and perfect for a stay in Harris. A lovely kitchen to cook in on rainy days and a beautiful view from the bench. Very clean and lovely location.
The hot tub isn't really usable- even after trying to heat it all day it didn't warm up enough to use. The house was so nice we didn't really care though

The location was ideal for exploring the island, the facilities at the accomodation were exceptional aswell, Its decorated to a decent standard.
Beds were super comfy and spacious. They even had a travel cot and iron which was great.
Games room was fab to chill in after a day of exploring the island.
The seat just up a few minutes path from the house was ideal to watch the situation.
Me and my family would return in a heartbeat.
Nothing, place was great, fab location just up from tarbert.
Hot tub takes quite a while to heat up.

Location was good, ample walking areas near by. Highly recommended is walk to the lighthouse. Beds very comfortable. Had an issue with the fridge and freezer not working, which resulted in us having to through out some meat, on reporting the issue the owner was very attentive and a small fridge was provided the next day, which we felt was excellent service.
Although advertised as sleeps 8 (there were 8 of us) only 6 seats are provided at the dining table, meaning meals were split into 2 sittings. In general the property was very clean on the surface, although more attention to detail on cleaning would be of benefit, particularly in the Hall flooring, inside Kitchen cupboards and drawers and Kitchen splash backs. Most of which we cleaned ourselves as we just couldn’t face looking at it anymore. Non stick pans and a salad bowl would be of benefit. The garden was completely unusable due the the height of the weeds, which was frustrating having children and dogs with us. The house sign was also not visible from the road due to the state of the garden, which also meant accessing the washing line a little tricky. The weather was beautiful so having a small table and chairs would of been a lovely addition for the paved area. Instructions on wheelie bins and when they get emptied would be helpful as with more information on the local area, places to eat and visit etc.
