Great for surf trips. Friendly staff. Fiji time

Spent 4 days at Funky Fish. We were disappointed in our stay & by day 4 we were keen to get back to the mainland. After comparing our stay with their website it seems the resort is falsely advertised.
When booking we noticed it included a full board, the website mentioned they would be serving breakfast, morning tea, 2 course lunch, afternoon tea & 3 course dinner which included a menu of different items with burgers, curries, seafood options & many more but on arrival we were told we were being served the breakfast, lunch & dinner with no menu presented. For the first three lunches we were served chicken, rice & lettuce & when asking for a vegetarian option the kitchen were unable to provide so if you’re someone with dietary requirements or loves a variety in meals then the Funky Fish is not the place for you. We noticed that other guests would transfer to other resorts to buy their meals.
From their lack in hygiene my partner and I both left Funky Fish with frequent visits to the toilet for days following our departure.
The pillowcases, bedsheets & towels were all stained. We often found bugs within the bed & geckos on the walls despite keeping doors & shutters closed. We had cockroaches in the bathroom however the shower is open air so it was expected we’d see critters around the shower.
They have a great swimming pool, great access to snorkelling, good hiking & staff were friendly.
The stay was a let down & upon our return to Fiji we will be avoiding Funky fish.

My partner and I came here recently on a surf trip and absolutely LOVED it. We were warmly welcomed and recognized when we came back a week later. Loved the huts right on the water, the delicious homecooked meals, and the surf we could access via boat with ease. Super relaxing vibe, good price and community feel. Coming back to Funky in November.

It is a nice happy spot. Not pretentious and where many nice and easy going people gather. Malolo is also a beautiful island and from the property you can reach Mt Silo and have a stunning view. However, the food quality should be improved, including with some more local products/cuisine, and costs should be made clear and transparent, such as the 25FJD per person asked for a 1 minute boat ride from the Ferry to the resort.

Excellent staff! Great area for diving. Beach is not swimmable, but loved walking it when the surf was out. Plenty of food but would have liked more options. Too much rice and fries. Loved the bure’s. Not much to do.

Do not stay here! Firstly the property weren’t amenable in getting us to the hostel, they were aware we were on the south sea ferry and instead of getting us on their boat they informed us to go to Malolo island resort, we then waited an hour for them to come on their boat which never turned up so we had to pay the island resort to take us 10 minutes around the corner on their boat. The manager then made out that it was a funny accident and didn’t acknowledge we’d been waiting an hour knowing we were stranded as his guests. The beach bungalow was disgusting, the bathroom and shower facilties were actually better than the room (that’s saying something). There was lizards and mosquitoes in the room all night, we are aware we were staying on a small island however the next island we moved to (early I must add) so we could get away from Funky fish had no mosquitoes to be seen in the room and they provided all appropriate nets etc and curtains in the room. We have been travelling round Asia and never been bitten so badly over one night in Funky fish’s beach bungalow (we have stayed in similar beach bungalows before). The generator was right behind us so also very noisy. Food was standard, not bad for the price but didn’t help the experience. No paddle boards to use as all the paddles were broken, there was only 1 kayak with 1 ore as the other was broken. No snorkelling equipment to use. The whole place needs a lot of TLC and renovations. We left early and as quickly as we could!

Great place to stay in bure with sea view, lovely crystal clear water for swimming. Lovely morning and evening views. Very helpful and friendly staff. Walking distance to six senses beach resort, which is a great add-on. Cheap boat available to visit Musket cove and plantation resorts. Cheapest of most of the other resorts.
The beach is tidal, so you won’t be able to swim there all the time, but just over the little hill and six senses beach resort offers all tide swimming and facilities available for visitors.
I would really love to go there again.

The Funky Fish was amazing! The staff were incredibly friendly and went above and beyond to assist guests. The photos online do not capture the beauty of the place—it’s even better in person. For its price, the Funky Fish is well worth the value, without a doubt.
However, getting from the resort to other islands or activities can be somewhat challenging and expensive. The island itself offers limited activities, and the cost of boat transportation can accumulate quickly, each boat trip costing at least $50 FJD. It's something to keep in mind for budgeting purposes.
For vegetarians, dining options can be a bit of a challenge. The kitchen staff does their best to accommodate dietary needs, but options are rather limited. The food is generally good, but vegetarians might find the options difficult.
Despite these considerations, I would definitely return to the Funky Fish for another visit. Its an incredible place to stay!

Great: staff, pool/deck/eating area, beds, rooms simple, but clean. Quiet and restful. Nice water and not a bad place to visit a few other islands from on day trips.

Did not get a key despite requesting. Pool not available and not notified. Rodents. Trash on beach. Left a day earlier than reservation

Our stay at funky fish was very disappointing. It was nearly impossible to get any information or help from the staff and you feel stuck here because the manager controls all your boat transfers and that's the only way to do anything.
My wife was served a moldy wrap on our second day for lunch and the staff acted like they knew it was moldy. The rooms are very minimal and the sheets had stains. The main common area wasn't enjoyable either because all the chairs and the pool felt dirty.
If the surf conditions don't look good at tavarua, don't stay here under any condition.

Funky Fish was a great property to travel to while in Fiji. Great price point that includes all meals which I thought were good. Beautiful beach and pool area. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are simple but has everything you need especially when you will be spending most of your time in the common areas. I felt safe travelling alone here. There is a good hike to a nice viewpoint above the resort as well.
The one thing that could be improved is communication around boat transfers to/from the island. Be aware that you may end up going to multiple stops before you stop at funky fish if you book through them - which was fine but good to be aware as it added an extra hour and a half onto the journey which wasn’t communicated very well.

The views are incredible, but the manager is not friendly, the bed sheets and towels were dirty, the kayaks they offer do not exist (they have one and it is very damaged), it is not a good place to bathe or snorkel. In general, the pool furniture is neglected and in poor condition. The dinners were very good. If your idea is to relax in a hammock all day, this is your place.

We never got to funky fish as we were informed that there was a issue at the island so were told we were spending the night on beachcomber. So never got to funky fish

Affordable, chill, wonderful staff and just good vibes to really slow down if you're willing to go with the flow and embrace the bumpy boat rides!
Fanatstic snorkelling and surfing options that you can boat out to and decent hiking areas.
Really communal with other guests and staff.
Big shout out to the staff when power was cut and they worked so hard to make sure everyone was comfortable as they worked through the night to have it restored. They were such legends.

The staff were amazing, always friendly and helpful. The view was incredible and the sound of the ocean made falling to sleep easy

Resort had nice views and friendly staff. But that was all. Getting to the resort was hectic. The taxi service very costly. The accommodation was not good. Not very clean. Bedding looked like it was never changed from last use. Bathroom was clean but net overhanging from the roof was full of insects and dust.

DON'T STAY HERE unless you want to feel like u are stuck in a final destination movie. We left early and forfeited our prepaid nights as Manager refused to offer a refund for the nights we werent staying.I was ELECTROCUTED by a dodgy electric kettle, lucky to be alive or not had toes blown off according to 2nurses that by fluke were on the island for a holiday. The current rattled me up to my brain then down my body out through my feet so I have been left with migranes, nerve tingling and dental damage.Manager wouldn't offer an apology as "nobody else had ever been shocked by it". I had made staff aware I was allergic to fish and asked which dish it was on the serving table so I could avoid it,was directed to the chicken, which turned out to be fish! thankfully I knew after one bite of it but still suffered an asthma attack and fevers.I knew I had an allergy but was unaware of how severe the allergy was so wasnt armed with an epipen. The next day we questioned the chef 4times if the food had been cooked with the fish, we were told it hadnt...yeah nah.It had.
Good luck walking the wobbly rotten stairs of doom held in place by 2nails. Enjoy yr room with holes in the wall that cockroaches loved to appear from or filthy shower with blood on the walls and toes nails on the floor.Your toilet wont flush away your deposits properly so makes for a sweet smelling experience in the heat.If you enjoy gluggy rice and tasteless food this is the place for you.

Our stay at Funky Fish was amazing. We stayed in the 2br Bure. The configuration is 2 singles in one room, a double in one room, and a single in the lounge.
The best part of the place is the staff and service, really loved the hospitality there.
Food was also really good value for what we paid, continental breakfast in the morning, cooked lunch, and dinner buffet. Simple but yummy food.
My favourite part of the experience was the traditional demonstrations of coconut, cooking fish and basket weaving.
The only improvement I’d suggest is to maybe have a bit more furniture in the 2br Bure so all can relax comfortably in the lounge area and maybe some side tables by the beds would be nice, and some utensils in the kitchen.
Food wise, for Fiji in general, if you have any allergies like lactose or GF, to bring your own breakfast.
Can’t wait to go back again and stay longer next time! Vinaka ❤️

Perfect place to chill. The staff were great. The facilities basic but adequate. Meals were good and there was always plenty for everyone, even those having 3 servings! Take something to fill your time e.g. books, and just enjoy the time out.

The resort was in an amazing spot and the staff were all very nice. It is a budget resort in close proximity to an amazing surf break . The sleeping quarters are very basic . Television and pool table in the common area .Budget resort good value.

Funky fish is as it is described... only badly worn out and need of a fresh coat of paint, and a lot of TLC. everything is ramshackle, broken, dirty and scuffed up... except the grounds which are well maintained.
Tarusila the manager has an edge, neither warm nor welcoming and ineffectual. Everything i asked of him was poorly executed or not performed. Sadly this attitude prevails in the front office; the other employees were friendly and warm.
All of the above being said, Funky fish is very inexpensive compared to most of the other resorts which tend towards the upper end and offer a much higher level of service and quality. The other guests, while equally unhappy, were very pleasant and friendly, which was very nice.
The food is simple, copious... it would be nice if the menu included more local fruit with are abundant and tasty.
I didnt surf but there are a number of great breaks very nearby which are reported to be great.

My friend and I enjoyed our stay at Funky Fish. The meals were a generous size & delicious and the resort is well situated right on the beach.
You'll be happy staying here if you can get used to Fiji time and don't expect a fancy resort... the rooms are basic but what I would expect for a 2 star resort with a cheap price.
A few things to note: 1. We came from Port Denarau. Be sure to book ahead and arrive to the port on time otherwise you may have to pay $50 extra fee per person. The boat dropped us at Beachcomber Resort and the boat to Funky Fish didn't arrive for a few hours - there was no warning this would happen. However Beachcomber has a beautiful beach so we enjoyed a swim while waiting.
2. The boats from Funky Fish are small and fully open with only a little shade. Be prepared to get saturated if a rain storm hits! (the guys wrapped our luggage in plastic).
3. On the way back to Denarau, the boat took us from Funky Fish to Musket Cove, and from there we got a ticket for the Malolo Cat, which is a big ferry and costs more than the initial transfer.

this place needs to be shut down.
From the anti vaccer bus driver to the $200 ferry ticked that was a dinghy with food in it. The room we booked not available. After saying we booked a larger room were show a one room filthy apartment up 50 rickety old steps and told we were upgraded. Same thing happened to 3 others while we were there. Food disgacefull , old fruit sometimes juice that was powdered cordial and sliced toast with jam portions or peanut butter. On the last day no butter. For the surfers and thats why it was booked after an early morning surf never back before breakfast over as only open 7- 9, Nothing else available. Staff unhelpful and pretend everything okay.. This has been going on for years just check old reviews. Had I know I would have got the boat to Musgrove Island but did not have any idea it was possible.
Its boring dangerous overpriced filthy. DO NOT GO THEIR YOU WILL BE DISSAPOINTED.

I LOVED Chef Max's dishes...every one was delicious. I was so grateful for Captain Bill taking us snorkeling, and getting us to Nadi for the day (we grabbed some bread for the breakfast bar next morning at the bakery while we were there!) and got a special dip in the ocean as a reward. :) Wati and Dave and Lumeli, the Manager, the whole place, in fact! are all wonderful. It honestly felt like family. Ana took care of housekeeping in our very simple but spacious and airy 2 bed beachfront bure. I loved the shower off the main house, with the private airy view of the trees above. Cat lovers will love the several kitties on property; dog lovers will love the neighbor's sweet rescues that walk the beach each day. Everyone comes for the legendary surf offshore. Stay for the warmth of Funky Fish. Seriously.

Staff at Funky Fish were all extremely friendly and accommodating. Meals by Chef Max were delicious, and he was able to make adjustments for our gluten free friend.
BEWARE OFF-SCHEDULE BOAT TRANSFERS
We purchased and confirmed in person an off-schedule boat transfer back to Nadi airport in order to make an afternoon flight. We were told that this transfer would leave at 11am in order to make our 3pm flight. Granted there is always "Fiji Time" to take into account, but this transfer did not leave until 12:30pm.
The boat was tiny and extremely overloaded (12 people + luggage when it should have been maybe 8 people max) leaving in very rough seas. One passenger was injured en route and we had to pull behind Malamala Beach Club island to wait for a larger boat. Why was this larger boat not sent in the first place??? Needless to say we did not make our flight, there was only 1 room available that we could find in the greater Nadi area ($1,000/night), we and our luggage were soaking wet from water splashing over the sides for 4 hours, and no one from Funky Fish seemed to care at all that the transfer we paid almost 3x more to take cascaded into the worst day of travel hell that anyone in our group had ever experienced.
Organize your own transfer if you need to be somewhere by a specific time. Don't pay Funky Fish to almost drown you and your belongings.
