room area is very small, so insufficient open space to place luggage. But here is a traditional marchi ya you can feel

Very nice support with everything, nearby cultural points like the Nijo-jo Castle, good subway/bus line near to it, beautiful traditional house!

I was so pleased with Hostel Mundo! It has the style of a traditional Japanese home, with all the comforts that come along with that. That means snug rooms with sleeping cushions on tatami mat floors, a warm home-like environment in the common quarters, and a welcoming staff that is knowledgeable about the surrounding area of Kyoto. I actually wish to stay here again! So I hope I can the next time I want to visit Kyoto. A little distant from the more happening parts of the city, and a bit of a walk to the closest train station, but otherwise really, memorably great in all ways.

Wooden house, very traditional feel

This place was not comfortable - the space had been carved into too many rooms, and every space was cramped. The shared bathroom area was ridiculous - you have to turn sideways to get down the hall. The walls are paper thin and you can easily hear through them. The 'free breakfast' considered of toast and one egg. We paid way over 10,000 yen per night for the 3 person "family room", which was far too much. Two positives: the location is good, and the staff were generally very helpful and nice.

Great staff. Organized and quiet. Good location to Imperial Palace and Nijo Castle. Close to bus stop that take you to Kyoto Station (take #9 bus). Old, quaint building. Not fancy but good hostel/backpackers location.

Great place if you want a more traditional stay while in Kyoto. Staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. The house is a little aged which gives it a rustic feel with the tatami rooms and decor. The futons are pretty comfortable considering but still is a futon, so expect that. The only real negative is that it's in the residential area so the train station is a bit of a walk, although there are buses nearby and you can rent bicycles. Overall great stay in Kyoto and would definitely do it again.

Hostel Munro is an authentic, wonderful Japanese building with an interesting layout and beyond friendly staff. Without a doubt the best Hostel I have ever Stayed in. In addition the walk into central town is very close meaning it's perfect to get around.

The hostel is very traditional with a common room and tatami mattress. I loved that. Also you can enjoy there free tee and coffee. The hostel is traditional style, simple with a wonderful familiar atmosphere. I have never seen staff taking that much care about their guest and helping out wherever they can. By the way it was very clean!

The staff are very friendly and helpful. They would recommend good restaurants nearby and help to search the bus schedule for places you want to visit. Some of the guests were going to see sakura and the staff lady even called the temples to make sure the sakura trees were still blooming. I am sure the guests had a good time visiting Kyoto and we had nice chats at nights. :)

Locate near train station and subway. Give choice to customer to choose mode of transportation to arrive here. There are tons of other hotel here. Near the main road. Look safe. I arrive here at night and everything went smooth. Shared bathroom at ground from about 9 and toilet about 4. Hair dryer, iron, weighting scale available. The counter have lots of guide for the city. Wifi is good. Inside room is clean with futon, tv and fridge. Overview, it was a good 1 night backpacking style stay.

1. The staircase was so narrow. There was almost no landing at the foot of the staircase. One has to get off at the second/third step to avoid knocking into the wall.
2. The house was constructed of timber that made a creaking noise. I constantly feared that the ground on the second floor might collapse. Couldn't sleep well. Some walls were covered with chipboard, while the rest was in its original state - cement. It was a run-down shack.
3. The room's door was poorly fitted. There was a gap between the frame & the top of the door, hence no privacy at all.
4. The door was secured with a simple lock that could be broken into easily.
5. The house stank. The open kitchen concept meant that any smell would emanate into your room. Imagine being covered in that smell after taking a bath, just before you're about to head out or go to bed! Terrible!
6. It was overcrowded. There were about 14 occupants sharing 1 small bathroom & 2 toilets.
Overall, it was a terrible experience. We dreaded returning to the hotel everyday. Will certainly not recommend it. Not worth it even though it's cheap. If I had known the condition earlier, I would pay a little more for better accommodation.

Very basic hostel with good bus links to the city.

Nice room, very traditional. The only issue was that the place only had bathrooms in the ground floor and they were very small. The hostel is very close to Nijo castle.

Staff were dry hospitable and hostel was in such great location. Can rent bikes for 500yen for 24hrs. Stayed for 5 nights which was enough times for us to see Kyoto. Good veggie restaurant near by and supermarkets

Be prepared to be cold when walking around this old house as this is an old traditional house however the hosts are lovely and helpful making up for the slightly rustic comfort. We had the super twin bedroom (room with fan) and it was spacious and nice for 2/3 people. We slept WELL. However the insulation of the walls is non existent therefore do not expect this accommodation to provide you any intimacy. Bring earplugs if you want to fall asleep more easily. Recommend you rent the bikes and bike around the city its easier and really pleasant.

Nice hostel, kind of traditional japonese house and bedrooms, it feels like being "at home". The futon bed could be harsh for the back for westerns not used to it but it is part of the experience.
District is very nice with the imperial garden and nijo castle next to it.

Awesome stay in kyoto loved this hostel and for the staff Koko and Bell, for helping me domo arigato gozaimashita.

The hostel is located at a very quite area, about 5 minutes walk to the bus station, 500 yen for one day bus pass can be all around the attraction, the room was too small for 6 girls, I have not space to unpack or put my things, as I was on the top of the bulk bed. I am living in a old house at Ireland, so I do understand you have to walk slowly and light step. as it was a old house, everything should designed very small, like small room, small toilet, my roommate always hit her head, because she is a bit tall. The staffs were very nice, teach me where to go, how to go, and what to go, and they speaks good english.

Staff is very helpful and accommodates English speakers. Highly recommended for traditional Japanese style!

Tiny room - no room for anything other than a bed. We had to keep our belongings outside in the public hallway. Paper thin walls - you could hear everything and basically open plan, so if someone cooks or uses the bathroom - the smell permeates. One the toilets - I couldnt sit down properly (I have long legs!) both toilets are tiny. Really not worth it - if youre looking to save cash, head to a local love hotel where its the same price for a larger room, amenities, privacy, quiet etc. We are travelling the world and have stayed in many many hostels - this was by far the worst.

I stayed for about a week at Mundo and Im glad i did! The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Its a small hostel but cosy. Walking distance to Nijo Castle and even the Imperial Palace.

This place was great. It was an over 100 year old building and for me was a great way to experience old style Japanese hospitality without spending over the top. Its not a perfect hostel, but for a few nights it was a cool little find.

It is a nice backpackers hostel, they are re-using the old Japanese house and you can experience living in one at Hostel Mundo with much cheaper price. We got the room with double bed, and its quite small, hard to move around and not for people who has large suitcases. The stair is quite steep so be careful, anyway they have free tea and coffee so its quite good for a morning/late night snack. They have small kitchen, small common room and only one shower/ 2 toilets. So we need to get up early to skip the queue. And its located only 10-12 minutes walk from the nearest bus stop.
