We came for a couple nights to LA as part of our coastal family vacation. I hit the jackpot with the Santa Monica Proper. Everything was perfection, from the outstanding hospitality of every single employee to the efficient communication (to help time room cleaning, check out, special requests, etc). We dined at The Palma for breakfast - again perfect staff attention. Delicious food. Enjoyed pool time w classy nosh from the rooftop restaurant (i told my 14-yr-old how lucky she was to eat charred octopus poolside!). Location is top notch, just offset from the busy Santa Monica boardwalk and pier, so it’s quiet but super accessible by car/foot. I can’t say enough about this hotel- all great things. Would love to stay again.

Property was amazing!!

Crowded on holiday weekend. Couldn’t get into pool. Hard to get into restaurant. Nice place. Thought it was over priced for experience.

The hotel itself is stunning. However, its location in a less than desirable part of Santa Monica detracts from the experience. The service was the most significant disappointment. We repeatedly asked for water that never arrived, had issues with housekeeping removing and not returning robes, and experienced a privacy violation when a staff member entered our room despite being asked to come back later. Additionally, splitting the room charge was unnecessarily complicated, and my friend had to wake up at 5 am for a task that could have been done the night before. The commercialization of in-room products, all available for purchase, cheapened the luxury feel. Finally, the absence of turn-down service was surprising for a five-star hotel. The pool area was fine but overcrowded and overpriced, and the pool water was so warm it almost felt unsanitary. Overall, while the hotel’s design is impressive, the service and certain aspects of the experience did not meet five-star expectations.

10/10! Highly recommend this place to stay!

Stay at proper is always great. I’ve never once been let down by their service, attention to detail or the cleanliness of their rooms. As always 10/10 definitely recommend!

Love the hotel room and common area. They have great morning coffee/tea set-up with a huge common space to start your morning. Walking distance to the beach and even closer to many restaurants and shopping. Great for a visit to Santa Monica beach.

This Hotel is truly amazing. The staff are lovely and fun and informative from every aspect. It seems like everyone is happy to be there! We had such great service from the bellman, front desk, wait staff downstairs, and everyone on the rooftop! Pia on the rooftop was so gracious and accommodating! We will be back!

Amazing stay!

We were really looking forward to our stay at The Proper after it came highly recommended by a friend. Unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations and we were left a little disappointed. We were charged exorbitant fees for parking and offered little to no alternative by any of the hotel team. We were also denied use of the pool on our only free afternoon due to it being hired out for a private event, and weren't notified about this on arrival. When I flagged these complaints with the team at the desk, they offered to refund a resort amenities fee of $120 for our 3-night stay, a fee which I wasn't aware was being charged in the first place. I accepted as I just wanted a resolution and checked out. Following this, I was still charged the full amount including the amenities fee and three weeks later I'm still waiting to hear back from the hotel about a refund. All in all, the service at The Proper doesn't match up to its price point or online ratings in my experience. Location, decor, and rooms I can't fault, but I certainly wouldn't stay there again.
