Although the hotel is very convenient to Times Square and the Rockefeller Center it didn’t have any amenities. The hot water tank was out one morning. The elevator is so small and although there were 2 only one was working. The day we were leaving we had to take the stairs with our luggage because we couldn’t get an elevator. They were jammed packed whenever it stopped on our floor.

We stayed one night. Got a refund and left.

No access to thermostat in our room. Hotel halls dirty, undergoing renovations but truly a mess. No hot water in the building day of departure so no showers. Elevators slow and inadequate! Location for Broadway good and the staff was trying all doing their best in hard conditions.

I've added The Gallivant to my "no stay" list. The room was tiny and in bad shape (chipped woodwork, chipped paint on the walls, dirty windows). The shower was miserable: there was a pane of glass over half the stall, and the other half of the staff was empty. Was this supposed to be trendy and chic? The bathroom floor flooded every time I took a shower. The sign said there were ice machines on the 15th and 10th floors: the machine on the 15th floor was dead and in fact there was no ice machine at all on the 10th floor. Only two tiny elevators for 16 floors? I had to wait 10 minutes for an elevator. On the day I checked out, one of the elevators appeared to be not working (it was stuck on the 3rd floor). For $388 per night, I expected better than this mess. I'm not going back.

Most expensive hotel we've ever stayed at in NYC. Paid over $1000 fro 2 nights. It was NYC marathon weekend so maybe that's why. Wait for the one elevator was extremely long-took over 20 minutes to go and back down every time. Door would make huge noise every time it was opened and door lock on inside was half off and dangling.
On a plus, location was convenient - very central to theaters and bus station (Penn). Friendly and courteous staff.

At first we were given a room which was quite small, even for NYC, a little beat up, although bathroom was updated nicely. It was a little dark, one small/average window, not much room to walk around the end of the bed, paint was splotchy, missing a light fixture on one side of the bed. So we got another room which was MUCH better, cleaner, bigger, better for the price we were paying during December. Then didn't have hot water for the shower. We figured use was high, but hey, it should still have hot water. We mentioned it and all was fine the next 2 days. Bed was VERY comfortable, although I would recommend a 3rd pillow since they squished down quite a bit, but overall comfortable.
Take note: it's a great location if you want to be a block west of Times Square, but next to a fire station and constant sirens going off, hey it's NYC! If you want quieter, stay farther away from Times Square. Staff was very friendly, with the exception of only one or 2, but no big deal, the others made up for it. Overall stay was fine, great location to the action and noisy overnight, maybe like afternoon to maybe 2am. Elevators are small and it can take a bit to catch to go back down from your room. It took us nearly 20 minutes or more to catch the elevator when we checked out. Much too long. If we didn't have all our luggage we would've taken the stairs since only on the 6th floor.

Very comfortable stay. Thank you!

It was a nice bathroom and comfy bed but not very clean. The bedside table I wiped myself and the cloth was pretty dirty. Paint chipping and lights didn’t work. There was no thermostat (so one night was too cold and the other too hot)

This hotel is quite tiny. The rooms are made for people that do not want a lot of space around them. The bathroom is not set up for anyone over 200 pounds. The staff was very attentive to meet our needs. The hallways and rooms are showing their age. I guess this is why the hotel averages lower room rentals compared to others in the area. I would not stay here again.

The price was right, but we wanted to spend as little time as possible in the hotel. The lobby was sad. One day we arrived to a giant puddle of vomit in front the elevator. It took over ten minutes for someone to come clean it up. Our room had a limited number electrical outlets and they were loose. We pulled the top bunk bed mattress and put it on the floor because it was not safe for anyone to sleep on it suspended due to the extreme slant. When I alerted the front desk about it, they just shrugged and said “yeah, that’s fine, put it on the floor.” One morning, the shower never heated up beyond lukewarm. The location was perfectly convenient. The beds were comfortable.

We had a tiny room with twin beds but it was perfect location for my sister and me going to a show and meeting friends in the theater district. Place needs a lot but was clean enough and beds were comfortable.

The best thing about this hotel is the location--if you're doing a lot of things around Times Square. The bad things about it were the extremely slow elevators (15 floors & you actually had to plan this waiting time into your schedule), extremely small bathroom (& without any shelf space for toiletries), the very cold temp rooms (our stay was in Dec & the windows were actually breezy & there was no ability to turn up the heat), & the dirty hallways (our room was decently clean; we saw a large cockroach in the hallway).

The hotel is in very poor conditions, there’s mold in the bathroom, walls, floors, sheets were dirty. AND no hot water for shower during WINTER in NY. Not a good experience.

Convenient location. Rooms are fine, but the hallways are run down and the elevators are VERY slow. Other than that, great clean place to stay.

Very dated. But was ok.

Someone had previously smoked in my room and I could smell it in the sheets. Do they not change the sheets or has the smoke so permeated the bed that it seeps through? Either way, disgusting. Also, overall the room looks absolutely nothing like the pictures. The window was boarded up, the window was dirty, and the furniture was dinged up and spotted.

Terrible hotel, bad service very loud very dirty rooms not well kept. Elevators old, dirty and broken down often with people inside. Location is Fridy the only thing this hotel has to offer. Save your money and stay somewhere else.

Upon arrival before the normal time, I spoke with the desk and told them my name. They conformed that I had a reservation for a “family suite” and that they needed additional time to turn it over. I understood this and was assisted by a friendly bell hop to hold our luggage as we went out and did tourist things.
When we finally showed back up to check in, I spoke with a different desk person and supplied my name. He asked me a second time was I sure that I had a reservation for today. I told him yes and that I already confirmed this with the person working earlier. After a few minutes he said “ I found one and it is a “premium room with one bed”. I told him that was a mistake and that my reservation was for a “family suite” with two full beds and a set of bunks. He told me that I made a mistake in my reservation.
He then told me to call Expedia and have them try to fix it. I told him I was not doing that and it was impossible. He repeatedly continued to argue with me even after showing him my email reservation. He told me that he could not give me the room since he didn’t have any left.
I told him that he needed to accommodate my family since it was the hotels mistake that they probably gave away my room to make more money.
He eventually gave me a room that was not what we reserved or paid for and I was not happy with this experience.

Even though I had the “do not disturb” on my door an employee came in my room and took my passport and$ 200.00 in cash from my suitcase

The pictures on website are a lie.
I thought we were walking into a night club in the lobby, low lights with purple lights on and music so loud you couldnt hear the front counter ladie.
Room had no kind of refrigerator no microwave and felt like a jail cell.
Carpet through out halls was stained and worn and nasty.
Extremely disappointed with how much this place cost me for my daughters first trip to NYC. Will never stay there again. And if i was anyone else i would pay whatever it is to stay elsewhere. The best thing about this place was how friendly the hous keeping was. Everything else was a negative 10

Hotel is in a good location and friendly staff. However rooms run down and needs renovation.

Don’t stay here! My experience was horrible. Before I even got there, they couldn’t be reached by phone and when reached were extremely inflexible. The place room was extremely small, one elevator didn’t work, and I had to wait 15 minutes for the other. Horrible wifi. Just an overall horrible experience. Pay the extra money and stay somewhere else!

My expectations were low after reading reviews. Yes there were issues. The shower sprayed most of the bathroom floor. The chain bolt on the entry door was broken, leaving us without the additional layer of security. There was a hole in the drywall under the window. There may have been a mold issue as my allergies started acting up, but that could have been weather related.
However the room was comfortable and clean and devoid of bed bugs and shower drain flies. The staff was pleasant. There were no noise disturbances. The location was good.

It was a comfortable room

The heater wouldn’t shut off and we told the management and it still was unbearably hot. The outlets were missing their faceplates. The light behind one of the beds was unplugged and on further investigation found water coming from the outlet hole in the wall. The coffee pot was missing. None of these were addressed by the staff before we left.

The Gallivant is so convenient for a stay when coming into the city for a Broadway show. The staff was friendly and efficient and fellow hotel guests pleasant.

This hotel does not deserve the hate it receives. The desk staff were friendly (even calling the elevator as we walked into the lobby on both evenings), the cleaning crew were super friendly and never bothered us with the DND sign in place. Rooms were more than sufficient for midtown NYC at this price point. Metal doors are thin and as such you’re going to hear noise in the hallways. It’s hardly the worst noise issue I’ve had. The bed was fine, linens were clean. The walls had a few dings but were likely made by the same type of people showing off their “damaged” rooms. The rooms are typical NYC, small, so large luggage is hard to maneuver and store. The hotel offers a storage solution and it’s very reasonably priced. No issues with NYFD or the club everyone complains about (we were on the 6th floor). We had a tub/shower that did drain slow but we could shower quickly after being out all day with no problems. Elevators are small and you can wait for a few minutes but we never waited more than 5 at peak times. FYI no mini fridges but that’s a small complaint. This place is a 2 minute walk to Times Square and about 15 to MSG/Penn Station/Moynihan Hall.

Room did not have a thermostat in it so we had to call to get repairman to lower temperature and then we couldn't change it ourselves for the entire stay. Light flickered continuously in the bathroom. Elevators took forever. Room was extremely basic. Location was excellent of course.

Front desk wont even entertain or take any information until 3pm for check in. This causes a massive line waiting. If you even approach the desk at 2:50pm you are told to step aside a wait.
I understand if rooms may not be ready until 3pm, but this is simply asinine.
Rioms are tiny and have an extremely musky smell, with the ac/radiator unit caked in dust.

Great location, front desk personnel nice and courteous. Small room but typical in NY.
Comfortable bed, clean room.
Only complaint, there was no shower door/curtain (partiallly) so water splashes all over.

The room had a patched wall that hadn’t been painted, it was missing a smoke detector, the AC didn’t work, the room was 80 degrees with the AC on, the vent looked like it had never been cleaned, the shower had some bugs in the top left hand corner of the shower, and calls to the front desk went to voicemail.

Only two small elevators, and the lines to use them took forever, as one was being used and out of commission due to the clearning crews taking up one elevator durin peak morning hours and evening hours. Counted 6 to 8 gnat sink flys in shower every morning during my stay.
