Location was ideal for us. All the staff were really lovely, friendly and just nice people. The food was good, the drinks were good.

Absolutely fantastic place. No better way to experience authentic Costa Rica. We loved our lodge and spent 8 very comfortable nights here. Amazing location off the beaten track with the chance to see so much wildlife. Gorgeous pool and stunning seafront setting. One of the highlights has to be the staff here. Incredible team of people who were so helpful and accommodating and made our trip so special, helping us out to arrange taxis and trips and always remembering our fave drinks/breakfast choices. We ate many meals here and the food was fab every time. Honestly, can’t fault this little gem. Would come back in a heartbeat!

Calala Lodge is the place to disconnect and feel close to nature. Highly recommended for travellers who want to explore the Nicoya Peninsula and not stay in the "trendy" places and enjoy Cabuya - a place with everything you need for your stay to be perfect. The food is exceptional and the staff is very friendly.

My only recommendation would be to have more activities that can be done during the day and outside the hotel. There are excellent independent people in the area and it might be worth recommending them from the hotel.

We wholeheartedly recommend Calala Lodge. We had a wonderful time! The hotel is so beautiful that you don't even want to leave it for other activities. The hosts and staff are exceptionally friendly. The breakfast is super delicious! We had wonderful days- thank you for everything!

Having separate cabanas with a 2nd floor balcony and ground level covered porch was very nice. All but 1 1/2 of the staff were excellent. We wanted a beach that was not overrun by drunk Americans and hippies, and this was exactly that.

I was distracted by what is written in the next paragraph, so I did not realize until too late that they had charged 30% more for the room ($76 extra) than what was quoted on Booking.com. Our last night, I told the bartender that I wanted to pay cash for desserts. A waiter brought them to the bar, asking me my room number, so I told him as well that I was paying cash and not to bill my room. The bartender was listening in, and I heard him whisper my room number to the waiter. 30 minutes later I asked for an itemized bill, and the desserts were on the bill. The bartender did a very poor job of pretending to be confused and the waiter reluctantly agreed that I had already paid cash. Add to this that our daughter wanted a piece of bread with her coffee the first morning, this same bartender: "Oh no, we don't have bread " (at the restaurant). It seemed a small request, but... Then, if you don't know, temperatures at the beaches of CR are always hot as blazes, and for the price that they charge, I absolutely expected AC. I have never been beachside where there wasn't; even the hostels that charge $16 per night have AC. The ceiling fan was so high that it did not really do the job of keeping me from sweating in the bed. Lastly, if you want to go in the ocean, don't come here. The pictures of empty beaches is due to the fact that it is covered in golf ball to baseball sized rocks and it is even worse in the water. In short, do go to Cabuya. Instead of Calala though, stay at the Jungle Lodge and enjoy the animals, the pool, the quiet and the air conditioning!

Honestly I can’t fault this stay! The staff were lovely, the setting was incredible, food and drinks were such good value for money and it was so relaxing. The cabin was beautiful and very clean. You have to stay here!!

Monkeys in the trees, right on the ocean, great friendly staff, solid food, hidden away. Had a great stay.

You might have some animals making their way into your cabana. Beds could be better. So many spiders!

This is two days of our lives that we never will forget. We arrived just in time for a beautiful sundown and live music on the beachfront. All the food was yummy and the bungalow was beautiful. Lovely hosts and great staff. Kids had a great time playing in the pool. Hope to come back here some day 😊👌

This hotel is amazing. Matt and Cece (the owners) are the nicest people, the staff are all really friendly and accommodating, the food is amazing and the location is a 10/10. Suggest renting transportation (car, atv, moped) in order to go to montezuma/Santa teresa and to beach hop/explore. I’m a luxury traveler that typically would not stay at a hotel without a/c but this was not a problem at calala at all as it’s comfortable in the room with the ceiling fan and windows open. Will definitely be back to this hotel!

Great location, clean and spacious cabins, attentive staff, delicious food and drinks (Mojito Calala is tasty). Also, the most comfortable bed and linen we experienced on our trip. Just fantastic all around !!

Breakfast provided complimentary by hotel each morning. Menu was nice and prices were very reasonable. The staff was very attentive. Calala is located perfectly to experience authentic Costa Rica. We hiked to multiple waterfalls, spent time at remote beaches, surfed, hiked to Isla Cabuya at low tide, and relaxed a day by the pool and beach at the lodge. On 2 of our 5 days, we sat on our cabin balcony watching troupes of howler monkeys and white faced spider monkeys make their way through the canopy just feet us. This was a much better experience than more tourists driven towns that made us feel like we were back in Florida. We highly recommend the lodge!

Amazing property, staff was wonderful and attentive. The place was beautiful and very close to town.
