Hotel Wellies is a great find in Karuizawa! Everything about our stay was outstanding- the room was clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated; the full English breakfast was delicious (kids got to pick the eggs at the chicken coop in the morning); the location was great, close to Hoshino area with onsens; Chris, the owner, was so nice, welcoming and helpful. The inn dog, Freddie, totally won our heart ❤️ I highly recommend Hotel Wellies!!

My friends and I stayed here for one night. It was TOTALLY LOVELY. Very nice staffs, gentle and friendly dog. The owner, Chris and manager Judy were so friendly and lovely too. Big hug from Tokyo, MJ Kim. I just want to stay here as long as I can. It‘s like I‘m in another country. My friends loved here SO MUCH and they all want to come back here with their friends. To make a long story short, Highly recommend!

Chris, the owner was awesome. We were birdwatching and he took us out in his own car to areas he knew about that he didn't. Super nice person. Breakfast was also great and he made a special additional order of scrambled eggs for my son. He definitely went the extra mile - literally!

The area is very quiet, perfect for good night sleep. The room’s very spacious (much bigger than average hotel in Japan), super clean and comfortable with the charm of English countryside. You can sit by the fireplace with tea and cookies during snowy winter night, bliss. Delicious breakfast and very filling. Impeccable service from Chris and the team. Chris took me and other guests to see beautiful Christmas lights around the area. He also picked me up when I got stranded. I would definitely recommend Hotel Wellies if you’re staying in Karuizawa.

I very much enjoyed our stay at the hotel. If you wanted to experience a British style culture and atmosphere, this is it. It was a special experience. Room was spacious and clean. The beds were comfortable. Meals were excellent and the staffs were also fairly kind. I would like to definitely visit this hotel again. Strongly recommended!

We stayed four nights at the Wellies during the summer. It was superb! The room is spacious and comfortable. The English breakfast and smoked fish breakfast are delicious. Hotel grounds and garden are clean and nicely manicured. We especially love the living room that is cozy and full of character. You can tell that a lot of thought went into the design and even choice of every piece of furniture. The hotel is tucked away in one of the side streets - quiet and tranquil - without being too far from the train station. The owner Chris and staff are just wonderful. He picked us up from the Karuizawa station and we were also able to tag along for rides to various places throughout our trip. He also makes the best dining recommendations. Trust him on yakitori restaurants; he knows his stuff! Hotel Wellies is a wonderful place to stay. I highly recommend it!

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. I am an American living in Tokyo and was attracted to this lace because it seemed a little different. Exceeded all expectations! Our room was spacious and beautiful, and the common-room/lounge was warm and welcoming. Breakfast happened to be included in our reservation and it was delicious. After spending the day hiking we were able to unwind with drinks and great conversation with guests and staff. Outstanding service, friendly service. I can go on and on but I already this review is too long.

Hotel Wellies is great place to stay. My husband and I spent three nights here in June, 2019 and had a wonderful experience. Chris was a warm, funny, attentive host who made us feel right at home. From the moment we were picked up at the Karuizawa train station, to our check-in with Judy - who is full of smiles and laughs - to our delicious requested vegetarian dinners, we felt very well-cared for. And we can't forget Freddie - the large and gentle poodle that loves his perch in the lobby. The hotel itself is well-situated and offers all the amenities needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Great hotel close to nature, birding, and food! LOCATION: We spent two nights here in late May. The location is great. The hotel is just a 20-minute walk from the Karuizawa Wild Bird Forest, one of the top birding spots in Japan. We had the forest to ourselves and also saw tons of birds right next to the hotel. The forest itself is next to Harunire Terrace, which has amazing food and shops (try Il Sogno). There is a lovely temple and cemetery down the street from the hotel where we got some great pics. HOTEL: Our room was clean and quiet with a private bathroom. There is also a big deck and garden with flowers, bird boxes, and a feeder. Chris, the owner, was so accomodating and fun to talk to. He picked us up from Karuizawa station and helped us navigate the area. Since this was our first visit to Japan and we only had a few days, it was nice to be able to talk to someone in English. Would definitely stay again!

Staying in the Hotel Wellies is one of the exceptional experiences among my Japan tour. You can have a really British atmosphere at one time but then a beautiful Japanese scenery and cuisine when you walk out of its gate. I would also like to thank Chris, the host of Wellies for giving me an enjoyable British breakfast and telling me lot of tips in touring around Karuizawa. He even took us to a local cafe to have a Jazz night with local musicians. I certainly will come back when I visit Karuizawa in a different season.

We had a splendid stay at Wellies. Managed by a British owner, Chris, the setting of the hotel is of very classic British style. Chris was a super nice host fixing schedule with us everyday and driving us in and out. he’s also a genius cook. The dinner at Wellies was a big surprise for us - it’s British style set course tailor-made by Chris. I would highly recommend a go for the food and wine here as they are both absolutely fantastic. You can definitely taste the passoon therein.

Stay; Oct/14-15, 2017 / Rm 206 Felt comfortable from the first moment. The owner had contacted me a few days before I arrived, asking if I needed any info or Karuizawa. So when I arrived, the conversation picked up where we'd left off, making the place feel more comfortable and homelike. The ground floor feels more like a home than a hotel, with views to the backyard and a wood stove in the corner for cold days. Was greeted on arrival with a hot cup of tea and easy conversation with lots of information about the town. The room was large, clean, well appointed, large bath/shower. A sitting area separate from the bed with views to the gazebo in the back yard was pleasant. Very comfortable. In the morning, breakfast was a traditional English breakfast, sausage, eggs, beans, tomato and an English muffin with coffee or tea. An easy comfortable environment. A two hour drive from Tokyo, I'm looking forward to returning.

The hotel owner, Chris went beyond his duty to fetch us to and from the station. He is very hospitable and warm and we felt very welcomed. Had a great stay at Wellies.

The owner Chris is a very hospitable and caring host, knowledgeable about the area and always going to he extra mile to make the difference to our stay. Chris has lovingly re-created a part of Britain in Karuizawa from the decor to the food and the music. As an expat living in Japan it was a refreshing 'escape' that was only 1 hour from Tokyo. Would definitely repeat the experience.

The air con position is not so well. Always feel cold during sleeping if air con is switched on.
